The 7D mk2 was my workhorse for sports photography for 4 years and I was always pleased with the results it gave me,however as I got older the weight of it attached to a 70-200 f2.8 was wearing on my shoulders so I changed to Micro Four Thirds

I think for birding the 7DII is going to be the better option, it has a very similar AF system to the 1DX. For most other stuff the 90D will probably win out, but then it's a lot more expensive than the 7DII. I picked up my 7Dii & EF 70-200 f4 for under £600!

@@LeeIveson You got a good deal! I picked mine up for $600 (with a 24-70 F2.8 L II lens...I know, I know..). Took it out birding today and was blown away at its performance. Absolutely love the camera. Yes a 90D is cool, has more MP, but does it have dual card slots and weather sealing? Hmmmm lol.

I've owned and extensively used all the 1D and 1DX series bodies. I also have an EM1X. There is no way that any m 4/3 camera is as consistent and accurate as either the 1DX Mark II or 7D II for crucial moment photography when using continuous AF. Single shot AF the m 4/3 bodies are great, but they cannot touch continuous AF pro bodies, and that includes even the OM-1. The difference is that a dedicated PDAF sensor is much more sensitive than on sensor PDAF- with the only exception being dual pixel af from Canon. DSLR bodies have a dedicated PDAF sensor in addition to dual pixel af on newer Canon DSLR bodies. What I would love is that mirrorless could catch up with DSLR's for crucial work, but time and time again pro body DSLR's just are more consistent and reliably when it counts the most. Split second moments are crucial to record. There's no camera in the world that I'd rather have with me than the 1DX Mark II, and for going light, I'd pick the D500 or the 7D Mark II (either with a really fast consistent focusing/high quality lens) .

Very interesting to hear this. I was so impressed with the 7dii AF capabilities, I can imagine the 1DX series is fantastic 👌 DSLRs still have plenty of life left yet!

The 1DX II and 1D Mark IV are in another league. Pro's know it. The Mark IV is slower than the 1DX II but it is consistent. The 1DX and 7D II are a bit more temperamental because of the AF system, but enough experience you can get them to behave very well. The 1DX II is just a masterpiece. There is no camera for it's price that comes close (used market like new condition). Hell I'd spend 3k on a new one over anything mirrorless these days. Specs impress in a chair, there's no doubt mirrorless have impressive specs, but in the real world is what matters most unless you live your life reading a screen.

Hey New to the Market - Just Subbed as well You mention often the financial benefits of purchasing your cameras second-hand. As I am only familiar with more “everyday” second-hand purchases & the frequent risks of damage / broken items that come with this cheaper option ~ Do you have any info / suggestions / tips / things to consider when buying second-hand in the Camera Market? Is it more common to find well cared for cameras in like-new condition in this field of products? As opposed to other electronics that might be more commonly misused / abused during their lifetime?

Hey! I've found that 9/10 photographers love and look after their gear. In saying that, buying anything on the used market requires a little bit of homework before going ahead with the purchase. I'd suggest getting a general feel for what's out their on offer and for what price at the condition it's in, if that makes sense.

Lee The Pentax autofocus for action shots on all but the K3-Mark 111 are challenging. You made the right choice buying the Cannon DSLR for the price and features no other camera can compare for action photography especially at that price point and I do miss the availability of third party lenses for the Pentax system. Pentax makes great lenses but you pay for there great lenses as they are not cheap in comparison to Cannon lenses even on the used market.

Yeah for budget conscious photographers like myself it's a shame I can't justify picking up some top tier Pentax glass for shooting sports, it makes much more sense to add something like the 7DII plus a quality lens in the 70-200 f4 to my kit. And on a side note I actually picked up this 7DII for £265 with only 60k shutter count! The 70-200 f4 was £350 so I got a sports dedicated setup for just over £600 . . . I couldn't find the DFA 70-200 f4 for less than £800 second hand 😔

The 7Dii actually feels really nice in hand, maybe not as nice as the K3 but then I don't know many cameras that would feel quite as good as the K3! I'd say that the dynamic range is a fair bit better from the Pentax cameras I own over the 7Dii, but as long as you know the conditions you will be shooting in then it's not that much of a deal breaker.

I want to get into wildlife, mainly bird photography in mind and this camera keeps coming up time and time again the nore research i do. My plan is to pair it with a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 II lens Any advice or other camera/lenses you would recommend ?
@LeeIveson
@LeeIveson Жыл бұрын
I'd say that is a great combo in the making especially for wildlife. I've personally never had the chance to shoot the 100-400 but it looks to be a great option to get into the super telephoto world. The 7Dii is a really great camera for fast moving subjects so will also fit the bill & can be found at great prices these days. One thing I would say is that the 7D really shines in bright daylight conditions but then struggles a little in low light situations without the use of a wide aperture lens. But then again noise reduction software is evolving all the time so that may or may not be much of an issue for you. Good luck with whatever you end up with and have fun shooting!

I thought you were a Pentax guy?!! I did own a pair of the original 7D in my wedding photography days and put a lot of clicks on them. The sensor quality was terrible compared to the modern APSc Pentaxes. I switched to Pentax when I had the 6D which was a fantastic camera. The 7D was absolutely junk after ISO 800. As a matter of fact I shot it no faster than ISO 400. It ruined a unique night shot in Boston. I tried ISO 1600 to get fast enough shutter speed and in post production the images were garbage. Perhaps with today's ISO clean up software it would have been a different story. Solid camera body wise though

I still shoot Pentax. The high ISO performance on the 7Dii is not as good as my Pentax K3, but it's much better for fast action than the K3. Swings & roundabouts I believe the saying is. I've never shot with the original 7D so I couldn't comment on that camera, but I've not had any issues to date with the 7Dii when it comes to shooting at say ISO 1600 its fine, in my humble opinion of course.

All the APSc bodies were terrible with ISO beyond 800. Bodies were solid and the focusing was fine too. I shot portraits and weddings mostly. We shot car races on the track a few times and the focusing was fast enough to keep up. Pentax focusing went from terrible to ok on my last body which was the K1. I owned the K5IIs, K3 and K1 bodies. Canon could have made a monster ASP-C camera by incorporating the best features of the 7D into the 90D. But they didn't. Why? Profits over a high-quality product. I shoot with the 90D, and it's a fine camera, but it would have benefited from the /D's superior focusing and double-card slot. I've got to add, though, that I´m a flippy screen adddict. I would've been a no-brainer to have a flippy screen with a 70D/80D successor.

@@goldenfrog6EsCoSes I've heard that the 90D is also a very capable camera. From what I understand the 7DII inherited it's AF system from the 1DX which was pretty much a sports photographers dream camera at the time.
