You know what I like about this video the most? You were insanely positive and vendor-agnostic. When there were complaints, you voiced them, but you never went after a brand or talked down on a single camera. I REALLY wish the photo/video/A/V world was more like this. Thank you for this awesome video!

Thanks for the comment. It has become the "thing to do" to make negative videos. Negative videos get better views and seem to make people think you are honest. It's sad really, I see good channels being sucked into this and making these videos purely for views.

@@markwiemels another thing I see is (relatively) positive videos with quite negative titles. Often against m43 which I find kind of sad (guess I'm afraid m43 will die simply cause of a fad of wanting to have something to look down on ...)

Due to the fact that brands now deliver a new camera every year or every six months and the new functionnalities are very poor vs the previous one, I only buy second hand camera generally which are 2 years old. They are cheap, work perfectly and are largely sufficient for me. Same for the lenses. You can find very few used lenses for 70% or half their price new. A lot of people buy prime lenses because it s pro, but finally use their zoom at 90% and re sell their prime very little used. And you know what… it s good for the planet :).

@@markwiemelsA negative video every one and a while is okay even understandable but there are so many creators making only negative content if that was all I watched on a daily basis I would be toxic myself, and my mental health would definitely suffer considerably. There's a way to be "negative" without it being hurtful or toxic. Love it. Keep up the good work. Very informative as well

I think the Nikon Z5 is a highly slept on full frame camera under $800. It has dual card slots, 24mp sensor, 4k30, and IBIS. As a portrait photographer and hobbyist wildlife photographer, the Z5 is a very capable camera that I will occasionally pick up over my higher end Nikon, Sony, and Fujifilm cameras.

Meh, the Crop at 4k is brutal on the Z5. For about $100 more, you can get a Lumix S5 Mark 1 that doesn't have a crop at 4K30, also has the dual slots plus 10 bit color.

I just got the Canon R7 for $750 with less than 1000 actuations including a 256gb v60 angelbird card, battery, and charger, but no box. Camera and card were unregistered, so I was able to register them with Canon and Angelbird respectively. Heck of a deal, especially since I already have the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 art lenses and their use is made much better with the IBIS in the R7. I feel pretty stoked about the value for this rig at that price point, particularly for me and the EF mount lenses I already own. Great video, thanks!

I also own Lumix S5II and i think you should have mentioned couple of things: One good thing - Real Time LUT and Lumix Lab App, those can make this camera appeal to Fujifilm crowd in areas that Nikon Zf cannot, JPEG functionality and video colors without doing post processing. And one bad thing that i think cannot be ignored - moire pattern artifacts. You WILL encounter them and you WILL see them more than on camera brands that install low pass filters on their sensors. After vacation i found a few pictures with moire patterns, it was mostly fixable after post and doing resize, but there was one picture that i deemed unsalvageable. Never ever before on my fuji camera i have seen moire patterns in 4 years of usage.

I used one for over a week recently, a friend of mine owns it and allowed me to try it for a bit over a week, and this thing is a beast both for photography and even better for video! It goes well against many full frame cameras and from what I have experienced it sometimes does even better! You can’t go wrong with this little beast! I recommend it!

Great video Mark, Thank you! I want to add my thoughts about some of your recommendations: - Canon M50: An amazing camera, really my first love that I had to sell in order to fund my trip to Japan (sadly). I just want to say that in my experience, the 4k video of this camera beats even some high end phones. So if you are on a budget and can adjust to the loss of AF and the crop, you can do a lot with it in video! - Fujifilm X-T2: So I went to Japan and from my budget I was able to hunt it down under $600 USD. The mechanical shutter sound is the absulte best I have heard in real life! It performed amazingly well with the XF 16-80mm F4 R WR OIS lens. Coming from an X-T5 I thought I would struggle again without IBIS but really had no issue, the OIS allowed me to get decent shots in moderate low light! Also records in 4K 24fps which I was super happy with. And tbh, the dials experience with Fuji can be really fast once you get used to it! Keep up the good work man!

Shutter sound is not something I considered before, but now you've got me thinking. There is something satisfying about the shutter in my old Canon SLRs. No other reviewer states so plainly that the Pana GH sensors aren't as good for stills as comparably priced alternatives. Awesome comparison ! I was very much into photography between 2014 and 2020 and I've heard of pretty much all of them on KZbin, but never got such a comprehensive comparison. Being myself a previous Canon owner (EOS 600D and 60D) before switching to Fuji (started with the X-T10, which was my gateway drug to Fuji, then the X-T20, X-H1, and finally X-T3, which is my last owned camera), I'm super happy to see the X-T1,2,3 in your list. These cameras truly have something special to them, and it's a bloody shame Fuji has discontinued them, especially with the 2nd hand market scalpers going ham on Fujifilm cameras since their surprise hit with the X100V. Thank you for putting up such a detailed video, it's very refreshing to see someone who not only actually owned all of them, so has a lot of personal experience with them, but also going at it in a very down to earth way, and nothing sensationalist nor overly clickbaity negative (unlike this buffoon who's piling up on Fuji's lack of autofocus as if we were back in 2017 and building his whole channel around it... poor lad's viewers ratings dropped as fast as it artifically built up around a known issue for the past decade, and it just shows how authenticity truly is the most precious currency of our decade, as you've expertly demonstrated, so cheers to you).

Great vid…. But must say micro4/3s already has an established lens system far beyond Sony. Don’t shoot with Olympus at the moment but I’d pick it over Sony crop any day for well developed colours and the almost infinite lens range. Sorry Sony fanboys 😂

Great video - if you like the Olympus E-M1, you should definitely check out the Mark II version. It's one of those massive leap updates, and still a super reasonably priced camera used. And the E-M1X is a monster for sports shooting.

Never thought I ever would, but I bought the Lumix S5II. Incredibly impressed. I got it at a excellent price with the 20-60m lens. I ended up getting it based on the glass for the camera and the level of affordability--just like the camera. Plus Panasonic's persistent firmware updates. Only wish was that the S5II had a higher megapixel count for reframing, but still not a deal breaker since the photos and videos out if it look beautiful. Hopefully with the firmware updates AF gets better with tracking like sony & canon, but it doesn't seem far behind.

Hi Mark, in 26:28 you mention that the Canon R8 body is weather sealed? Are you certain on this? I have one and so far I was trying to protect it even against the softest rain. Not to mention, that I don't have the pro canon lenses.
@j_taylor

Not familiar with that camera, but you're right that a weather sealed camera is still vulnerable at the lens mount. My weather sealed lenses include a rubber gasket at the mount.

You’d be vulnerable without L series to the exception of the new 28-70 2.8, which is weather sealed but not technically an L series

Wow. Great range verity of cameras. Thanks for sharing. You’d mentioned you only reviewed cameras you are familiar with. Something to think about . . . you covered Sony, which appears to be your pick, Canon, Fuji, LUMIX and even OM. If you can afford all those different brands why ignore Nikon? Yeah, you did mention the Zf as kinda of a side note. I’d challenge you to give some Nikons a try.

Good review (I can't get on board with Canon - at all because - reasons I think) .. I have my eye on the Sony A6700 to shrink my load a little (I've used Canon, Nikon, and Minolta in the past), but the last hand full of years it has all been Pentax (K100D Super, K10D, K-3 ii, K-1 ii and now K-3 iii). I keep my bodies current with Pentax, but use all my old lenses all the time. Sony A6700 seems to always catch my attention (the A7C is also sexy - but lenses)..

As an R7 owner I can't believe how dismissive you were of it. I expect that from the full frame snobs, but not from an APS-C advocate. Remember that the R7 has IBIS and a 32.5mp sensor with their dual-pixel AF, as well as dual card slots. I've fitted it with the new Sigma RF-S 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN and it's a beautiful pro-level rig the size of an old 35mm SLR . I have lots of EF L and RF lenses for it, but the Sigma is sweet - I wouldn't look twice at the R8 due to its lack of IBIS. Please give the R7 the respect it deserves before Canon decides that offering a pro-level APS-C model is "casting pearls before swine."
@jamesfarrow6752
@jamesfarrow6752 Ай бұрын
Agreed. There is also the longer battery life to consider. I suspect the R8 is better in low light situations, which may be more important for some.

Back in 2019, I did a lot of research to find a good mirrorless camera that I could use for both amateur photo and video without compromising on either end and by far, the best option under 750usd (with lenses) was the Panasonic Lumix G85. It's better at video that the M50 and better at photo than the GH5 while being more comfortable and feature rich (weather-sealing, IBIS, excellent controls, 4K video, 9fps burst mode) than the A6000 or 6100 and any Fuji offerings which were significantly more expensive. The AF is pretty good and while it's not perfect, it's well worth trying to get it used with the kit 12-60 and the 45-150 lens. I got it on a black friday deal for 700USD with 3 filters and a cleaning kit brand new. While it's not the smallest or the best built MFT camera it has a lot of modern features while enabling you to utilise the 2x crop factor to try out wildlife, portrait, landscape and even astrophotography without investing a lot in lenses.

As a Fuji shooter who’s owns every Fuji camera you have shown the one thing you didn’t say that really needs to be addressed is how bad the auto focus is! Both my xh2 and xh2s with the lastest firmware are almost unusable with autofocus. It is literally getting worse with every update. It’s crazy! I actually might be buy a Sony again just for action shots because the autofocus is so much better then others

One thing to note - a person may never need to go to Full Frame or APS-C if they're only shooting for themselves. MFT isn't really on the way out and there's a LOT of glass from other people who are upgrading gear or are reducing gear. So let's be clear here. You're positive, but a person who never does semi-pro shoots, who never does commercial work? You'll never need more than MFT - are you trading Low light performance? Probably. But would a person buying something in the $300 category be doing that much low light? Probably not. Also - For everyone else. A cost of moving into APS-C & Full frame is size and weight. Equivalent lenses in MFT are a fraction the size of what you would need for their equivalents in Full frame. Compare any 70-200mm lens to a Panasonic 35-100 and it's holding a can of pringles vs a can of coke.
