Spot on. Pat guessed #1 before you said it . We get more positive comments but some people just don’t get it. 22 mpg with our car makes travel a lot more palatable. But, no more than 3 weeks with a few motel nights is the way we roll now.

I just love your videos! Nancy, you made me laugh out loud when you said by the time you hit Skagway, you would have sold your whole rig for $100.😂😂😂I know EXACTLY how you felt! Back in 1993, my husband was assigned to Fort Wainwright, AK. We bought a popup camper in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (where I’m from), loaded our gear and our four-year-old daughter, grabbed an atlas and the 1993 Milepost Magazine and hit the road. After a week and a half of rain, mosquitoes, and having to start looking for available campground spaces at around 4:00PM (and sometimes having to keep driving until 11:30PM until we found one…no cellphones or internet in those days….) we got to the city of Whitehorse in the Yukon, and I realized we still had ONE THOUSAND MILES to go. I threatened my husband that I was going to sell the car and camper and buy us plane tickets for the rest of the journey!😂😂😂 We haven’t had a camper in a very long time, but we’re saving up for a Runaway for when my husband retires for the second time. I’ve watched many of your videos multiple times. Thank you for your honesty and humor!

I think there is a small element of the runaway feeling a little like a fort/treehouse for me? It fits in garage, easy to tow, easier to park, and is affordable. Nuff said. I love the idea of the series but wish it were TEN things lol. Top 10 Must have gadgets, camp meals, upgrades to runaway, camp grounds, places to see, ways to meet other runawayers, emergency gear… I could go on an on because I love hearing from experts!

Thank you for sharing the real! I bought my runaway the same year you bought yours. I didn't want an RV. When people ask me about my camper I always explain that " I'm camping". I want to be outside, smelling the air, seeing what's up. I'm just age " mature" so I like a few creature comforts. I live in Florida so camping in anything in fl without AC is a must. Also makes for a great guest room or a place for me when I give up my bed. It has been a blessing during a couple of hurricanes. On top have listened to people's comments about my little camper. It's paid for, I can pull it easily, it stows theft and rent free in my garage and stays ready to go. Keep doing what you big rigs do, we'll wave when we pass at the pump.

This is a great idea for a series. Thank you. For me I pick up my new CampInn 550 next month. From watching your channel and others I decided that a tiny camper works for me. But I guess I won’t know for sure until I actually do it. I currently just use my ARB awning/screen room and it’s been fine, but the 550 I hope will be a nice upgrade. 😀

We just sold our 22’ Class A motorhome, now we want a Runaway tiny camper. Less is MORE. We’ll pull it with a short bed Chevy truck with a camper shell, if it won’t fit in the shell… we don’t need it. Getting there is half the fun, CAMPING is the other half. Being unpretentious is good. Minimalism is good IMO. Really like your videos, and after watching a few I think we’re going to buy a brand new one if we can’t find a clean preowned one. Can’t wait to get 18 mpg again. 😀💥💣

Hit it on the head guys! Sometimes the negatives are positive. I like living in my Range Runner on the rim of the Grand Canyon in late Fall and Winter prior to my backpacking trips into the Canyon. It gets this transplanted southern Hoosier acclimated to altitude and temperature extremes before the Old Guy drops into the Canyon for several days. 🥶

I've watched your other video "why to buy," and on this one I'd also like to leave a comment ( or two). A few years back my wife wanted to start camping again ( I don't care for camping) and she wanted to get a teardrop, so looked on KZbin about them ( which lead me to your channel). found all the DIY vids and told her when I retired (last year) I would build her one, we all know what happened the last couple of years. My biggest problem with these is you can't stand up in teardrops/square drops and she has a bad knee so crawling in would also be a problem. My other problem is I'd have to drive to Florida or order and pick up in Oklahoma (RV dealer) Ended up going on craigslist and bought a '94 Coleman popup cheap, it is the 8' box model ( light weight bare bones) and we got to stay debt free ( and she can camp more often). And yes I know we can't boondock at Wally world or any of those other places, but she camps closer to home, so no big deal on that. The Runaways are a great bargain, they just didn't fill our needs, but anyone reading this that wants to get off the ground tent camping, I say go for it.

Live in Tampa area but "camp" in Smoky Mountain areas of NE GA, SE TN, NW NC. We bought a used 2018 InTech Pursue camper, weighs less than 1600 lbs, all aluminum, insulated, with rooftop AC/Heat & Maxxair fan several years ago for $10K - got tired of sleeping in a tent. Because the InTech is built similar to a utility trailer, we have double doors that open on the back of the camper where we added a IronMan tent room that connects to the rear of the trailer and provides the ability to stand-up with plenty of room - makes all the difference in the world to our base camp set-up. EZ to pull and stores in our garage at home. Proud to Keep It Simple!

Bought a new Cool Camp in 2018. Has over 50k miles and has been to 45 states. Pulled it with my 2016 Mazda Miata until this year. Pulling it with a 2023 Jeep Compass now and getting 24 to 26 MPG. Because of it’s size a lot of campgrounds will allow me to stay in a tent site. That’s a lot less expense as well.

I had nothing but positive comments about my Runaway Range Rover. We had to park next to the semis at rest stops, and I had positive comments from the drivers. I had a neighbor come over after I pulled into my driveway and ask me what the square footage of my tiny trailer was. Obviously, I had bought a bed on wheels, and it was only made for that, and it had a chassis for 4x4 and nothing else. I looked long and hard at my tiny rig and said, "Fitting the swimming pool and tennis court was tough, but they did it". With that the guy went back home.

At first we slept with the mattress on the floor. When it rained we would be inside laying down. That got old so I put a 30” bed, cut the legs down just enough I could still slide a tote under it. I added a plywood slider so the bed expands the whole width of the camper so we both can sleep comfortably. Push the slider in and we have a sofa. Now just let it rain, we can sit up and play cards or a board game. I would like to add a back door. I would come in so handy.

I appreciate your input. I’m considering buying one for myself so I can go camping and visit different places. I have a small vehicle so I have to be able to tow it and there are two that I’m looking at…the Runaway and the Campinn. Both are towable with my car. It’s been encouraging to get feedback from individuals who have the same vehicle I have and they’ve had no issues with towing their little campers. I think the only issue I have is what setup to use for a toilet if there’s not one available at a campground or during the night.

Okay....regarding claustraphic....you both have a point. Some of those teardrops do look to me like just big coffins, but there are a few (like the Runaway and Hiker, that seem like they might be a bit roomier. All I want is something where I can feel safe but not constricted. I've heard that certain parks won't allow cloth side camping (tents/popups) due to bear activity. I have been watching videos about the Runaway and the Hicker trailers. I like them both. I even been watching self built trailers. I have been making a list of items I want to see if I could talk to one of these companies into building for me with my must-haves. 1. build the box a bit bigger, a 5' by 11' by 4 feet tall with a 1-inch pitch to shed the rain. This would allow a little more headroom for a raised bed. 2. I would only want 1 door and a window on the passage side. A small window along the top on the driver's side. 3. on the divers side I would want to build a folding down kitchen setup. This would be above the wheel and below the small window along the top. 4. with this folding itching setup a simple wing board that will give more counter space to cook and for food prep. 5. where the back door goes on the runaway and Hicker trailer build a small bump out about 8-10 inches to use an electric locker. This locker is where the batteries and other power items would go. 6. a rear tire mount on a swing gate that swings the same direction as the real locker door does. 7. rear locker with a puck lock latch 8. I want an AC and heater that will run on 12v with no AC power. Shore power to charge the batteries. With a solar plug port, so you can either mount or unmount a solar panel while traveling. I want the option to travel with it mounted or stole it during traveling. 9. both AC and heater plumped to vent outside this Heat & Air could be in the front like the runaway trailer even if that front box has to run the full height of the box. 10. Although I don't want a TV to keep me inside the camper like RVers. I would love to have one for the night to check out the weather for the next day. Or during bad weather. 11. A simple car radio with a CD player. Trailer part: 1 must be able to handle some off-roading. Nothing crazy. 2. must have more than 10 inches of ground clearance. 3. Under the floor storage. 4. Brake lights both on the trailer and box 5. stand on fenders. 6. Propain mounts on the front of the trailer 7. must have breaks. Option 2 for the box, would be a simple fold down box. That way you can stand up in the trailer. Total height would be 6.5 feet tall when unfolded. 4 feet tall when folded. A folded-down version would give you the towing feel of a small camper but transforms at the camp site.

My experience is Runaway and Hiker build what the build and are not custom shops. I personally would like to see Runaway’s Rouser about two feet longer. I understand their business model hits a price point that is vary attractive. Custom shops are super expensive so this leaves your only option of a custom DIY build. Thanks for watching our channel. Hey they are all good reasons not to buy tiny campers but I'm soo tired of a tent! So thumb your nose at the big rvs and figure out other ways to camp and have fun.

I converted a 6x12 cargo trailer so I can camp with my dirtbike. I get the same things from the toyhauler crowd. I love it when they walk up at gas stations and want to get their digs in. I have $18k invested and did the work myself. No leaks, no systems to fail, better appliances, better TV, better HVAC. I’m not poor, I just chose not to spend $50k on mass-produced junk.

We are looking forward to your series! We just got home from our first camping trip this year. This is our fourth camping season with our Runaway. We are former tent campers and the thing we love the most about camping in the Runaway is it allows us to enjoy the things we loved about tent camping (being outside, cooking outside) without the things we didn't love (sleeping on the ground, sleeping in a hot tent, having to pack and unpack everything every trip). We have a list of the top 5 things we have learned from Ed and Nancy (or "The Herkys" as we refer to you) 5. Runaway maintenance and upkeep 4. Attaching an old license plate to the back of your camper license plate for reinforcement. 3. Use shower curtain hooks for extra "hanging" space in the shower 2. Propane fire ring to warm up the ez-up and just to use when we don't want to mess with wood. And hands down, number 1. PUPPY PADS!! Oh my gosh, I can't believe what a game changer this is in the shower house!! And our bonus item - Indiana has a lot of cool towns and state parks. Thank you for taking the time to make videos. We have learned so much that has improved our camping experience!

I been tossing an ideal of comfort vs freedom to travel and camp off grid much as I can and choose freedom. No camper van, no off road camper trailer. I had someone installed two platforms and I got a solar generator and a freezer/ refrigerator. Although I still thinking of possible of getting a tiny off road camper vs 4x4 van( so I can stand up). I don’t think I’m poor according to median US household income😅

People don't look down on smaller campers around here. ( smoky mountains ) Gas prices and inflation is making teardrop and similar camper sales sky rocket. If your a campground with hookups type person then a traditional travel trailer might be better. Over lander type camper then teardrop all the way. To get into those tight off grid camping spots.

I think the inside should be 60" high. That would give you room to sit in a chair and on a potty easier. A Trelino Composting Toilet that does not use water and acts as a seat is nice. When done #2 can be throwned in a trash can and #1 dumped in the toilet. I would also like to see Runaway folks use aluminun frames. It would save weight and not rust as bad.

Runaway does have a stand up model called the Rouser. A lot of folks that start out with the smaller models upgrade to the Rouser mainly to have the ability to stand up.

Good video now I am scared I just spent a year building a teardrop and will be traveling from Oregon to Michigan in it with our beagle 😂 I think it will be fine though. I made a big tongue storage box and have a large screen house. I think it would be boring to camp too long in one spot anyway & that is why it appealed to me. We’ll find out if what you say is true.

I can't wait, until I buy my off road runaway camper. And, I get to meet you two . You two are so beautiful inside and out. Lol with you..What would be the adventure going down the road 🤣 in a half million dollar camper. I think 🤔 camping 🏕 is never knowing the unexpected adventures ? I think 🤔 I'll love runaway rallies. Cause, it doesn't matter, Who's rich ..We will all look the same ? But , the little campers will show the great imaginations of all the different designs of creative ideas 💡 and ,making someone smile 😃 THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR VIDEOS. 👏 👍 I'VE ENJOYED EVERY MOMENT........P.S 😉 AND IF I HAPPEN TO RUN INTO ANY RICH PEOPLE, I'LL BE SURE TO TELLEM ... I THINK 🤔 THAT LITTLE TINY CAMPING 🏕 TRAILER BELONGS TO THE JONES FAMILY ? 👪 😄

The only reason I want a small camper is for travel yes I would camp and use the outdoors until I want to wind down. I think I will keep a portable toilet and not use it. Some won't let you stay if you don't have a bathroom so my camper has a toilet. I will use facilities and skip the black water. 73
