Very good information here but I also believe the bug and winter cons really depends where you live in the province. We live in the south and bugs aren't all much difference then living in Ontario and the winters were much better. We only had about 3 weeks of actual snow on the grown this year and it was similar last year. Freezing rain on the other hand is much worse here then in Ontario. Keep up the good work.

I lived in TO for 15 years and definitely prefer winters in NS. Next to BC this is the mildest province and the snow generally melts a day or two after a storm. The air smells amazing during a melt and it often doesn’t snow until Xmas. As for summers I disliked many days in TO- too hot and humid, whereas outdoors is enjoyable in NS from June-Dec. Jan-May can be tough. Black flies last a few weeks, although I don’t have many where I live, not that I’ve ever been bothered by them. We were taught as kids not to swat at them because they detect panic making you a target. Buddy should take that into consideration. And don’t wear black. They like that too. Costco doesn’t exist in rural communities although you can order online if you need to be buying things. NS has more doctors and specialists per person than any other province. 10% don’t have GPs. In AB and ON it’s 12%, BC it’s 15%, and it’s 25% in QC. Getting a doctor in rural communities anywhere in Canada is a challenge. Taxes in NS are high, the cost of living in a have not province.

The things you list are 5 Reasons Not to Move to "Rural" Nova Scotia. Living rurally vs city are two different experiences. I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia and when living right in the city, black flies and mosquitoes aren't a problem. As far as shopping, I have easy access to products. And doctors are readily available at walk-in clinics in most neighborhoods even when you don't have a family doctor. I agree that spring arrives a month later in NS than in Ontario but Halifax winters are milder than most places in Ontario and Canada for that matter. (I get regular weather reports from family in Toronto, Ottawa and chilly Sudbury). We get a lot of rain in winter in Halifax while other parts of the province are getting snow. Native Nova Scotian here. The bugs aren't bad now. In the 70s and 80s, it was common for us kids to have dozens (probably 100s) of blackfly bites on the back of our necks, behind the ears and on our legs and arms at any given time. They were so thick, one might not find an unbitten spot on the back of the neck. I think I'm immune to their bite now. Blackflies are out in the day unless it's over 25 degrees, then the horseflies and mooseflies (larger than horseflies) come out. They are aggressive biters. Even drenched in Deep Woods, they'll try to take a bite. Mosquitoes come out at night. Deep Woods easily defends against blackflies and mosquitoes, so that's the product of choice. Winter makes us appreciate summer.
