@@HandOfMetal Yeah, tuners aren't complicated. And its not like they're not just copying the ones they're commissioned to make for companies like epiphone, jackson and Ibanez they just put the gears in a different shell that says "Grover" on it. The thing with made in china really isn't a _quality_ problem its a _quality control_ problem. In america if a bunk product is produced we have mechanisms that recycle that product or throw it away to keep the brand from being tarnished by the bad product. That concept doesn't exist in asia. They're more of a mind to sell it in case it works for you, and to replace it if it doesn't. To them a replacement warranty is equal to high quality, cuz eventually you can get a good one.

Usually youtubers get special review guitars that are better than stock. Like with the prs silversky se, all youtubers said they were great but the ones out in the wild don't seem to be as great. Now as someone who used to play schecters exclusively, the first time I played my gibson lp 50s, it felt like I was playing a real guitar for the first time. All my schecters went for sale on reverb and now I only have gibsons, a couple strats and a prs. I even have two 7 string les Pauls. They sound and play beautiful with no tuning issues.

I own three Gibson Les Pauls, each one from a different price tier, and the quality is definitely better the more you spend. With that being said, tuning has been an issue in the past, but what’s helped only recently is I started paying a luthier to help with setup/upkeep starting with the mid-tier model. What he discovered is the nut slot was cut lower than it should be and the angle of the backside was causing the nut slots themselves to come to a point. He replaced the nut with a handcut bone nut that was tall enough for the guitar and it’s been a dream guitar ever since. Every time I pull it out, it’s in tune. At the end of the day, I don’t necessarily think it’s completely a build quality issue, but rather that their luthiers aren’t taking the time for a proper setup. My luthier said nut replacements are a part of a standard setup if it’s needed, and the range when getting a setup is 75-105 total depending on what’s needed. In short, find a good luthier to setup your Les Pauls and they’ll be at this $550 guitar’s playability. With all that being said and liking the gibsons I have, I probably would pick an LTD Eclipse over a Gibson any day. I’ve played them as well and they’re very impressive guitars with incredible playability.

@todd moore I initially picked a graptech, but the luthier couldn’t install it because Gibson milled the slot so deep that the graptech factory height was barely high enough to clear the first fret. So we went with bone because he had a bone blank, but he cut and rounded off so well, you’d think a machine did it.

A lot of the issues with Gibsons staying in tune are the nut slots. Granted, this shouldn't even be a thing on a guitar that costs as much as a Gibson, but alas. Both of my Les Pauls (one an Epiphone Classic, the other a 1976 Custom) have a custom bone nut with proper slot work and the tuning is as stable as Uranium-238. For another great Les Paul alternative, i'd highly consider the Schecter Solo II Custom. Locking tuners, Ernie Ball compensated nut, Tonepros bridge, 12-16" compound radius, sculpted heel, push/pull coil splitting and Schecter's 'Pasadena' USA-made pickups (their in-house pickups are pretty much the best-kept secret right now). All for under a grand USD AND made in Korea.

This comment has practically nothing to do with guitars, but: Chinese instrument makers have become a damn respectable force over the years. I noticed this when I bought my trumpet brand new for $500 bucks a few years ago, and got an instrument that can easily butt heads with ones that cost thrice as much (for perspective, $500 for a new trumpet will usually get you a cheaply-made "student" horn, and maybe a nicely-worded note). It's such a great little insrtument that I still use it as my number one, because it both sounds awesome and it looks super fucking cool (which is a whole other rant I have saved up), and it being so cheap allows me to put that money where it actually matters! So, yeah, there are still companies stamping out cheap shit made from recycled green bean cans, but there are also some truly amazing instruments coming out of the country.

For whoever it may concern... I have to address this once and for all because I am legit tired of it and at this point this is just stupid. That 7 string SG that was featured here on this channel before is mine. The guitar is perfectly fine. It stays in tune even after mods. I didn't want to say this because I didn't want to seem sour and make anyone in particular look full of shit. But this click bait KZbin shit has been too much already. I literally put on fresh brand new strings on my SG a few hours right before we recorded that stupid awful hit piece. More over I didn't even properly wrap the new strings on the locking tuners, in fact I over wound them on the tuning pegs. Glenn was totally aware of this and decided to ignore it and move forward with the video. At that time I working slave hours at a aerospace machine shop which was literally 11- 12 hours a night, six and sometimes seven days a week. Boeing was competing with a rival aerospace company in order to rush the production of the 737 MAX. I am a California native and ill tell you its not cheap to live out here, let alone having spending money. The reason I mention this is because at the time I did not have the proper time to set up my SG and I was just so excited to be on Glenn's channel being that I was a long time fan and watcher. In hindsight I should have rescheduled with him in order to have properly set up my SG before we did the taping. I screwed up and I shouldn't have rushed the set up. I'm not saying Gibson's guitar are perfect, I'm just saying the video that was shot should not be represented as evidence or proof. Aside from that I have reached out to Glenn multiple times in order to do a part 2 and prove that my SG is actually a pretty killer guitar. He has ignored me repeatedly. He knew what he was doing, that SG 7 String video was just red meat for his KZbin base to shit talk and to get clicks. I have a good collection of gear and have not bought any modern Gibsons because it just doesn't make sense to spend so much to end up with issues more times than not. I have a BC Rich Shredzilla 7 that sits in its case for weeks at a time and when I pull it out it is perfectly in tune. I also have a MIM Fender Telecaster That I bought 10 years ago. Been sitting on floors propped against amps walls and desks since I was in High School, gigged to death, gets knocked around constantly, same standard hardware from 10yrs ago. Never had to make a repair, almost always in tune when I pick it up, stays in tune through a whole gig. Why are Gibson owners so masochistic that they spend thousands to fix a guitar that already costs thousands just to end up with a Neck Separation or headstock crack eventually?

Glenn should just stop talking about/reviewing Gibsons. But their clout is too much to resist. Gibson keeps the lights on over at SMG. Gibson in the title earns him between 4-10x the views than any of his videos not talking about Gibsons. Seriously just go take a look, guy averages 5-30K without gibson. Slap Gibson in the title and he pushes 200K views. He's kind of become a whiny little hack and figured he can make more money tearing somebody down than building himself up. Hence why he's released 4 or 5 Gibson hate pieces in the past month. Those 4-5 videos make up a LARGE majority of his viewership for the past 3 months, like more than 50% (No Gibson in title Roughly 3-400K views, Gibson in the title, roughly 750k views. He's a hater, a hack and a toxic bully. This past month of screaming and yelling over a brand NOBODY on this channel even fucking cares about or considers buying, is the reason I've unsubbed today and won't look back. Tons of educational resources on youtube without being talked down to by a guy pining over Gibsons.

While I agree on price, I don't really see the rest of the complaints you made. I have a 2013 Gibson Les Paul Studio. It's almost never gotten out of tune on me anymore than any Fender or Ibanez I own too. But I also just use 9 guage strings on it and apply pencil lead in the nut slot on string changes the same as my Fenders, properly stretch the strings before going anywhere to play live and it stays in tune. It is heavier than my other guitars but it's only 8 pounds. It's the historic styled Les Pauls that are boat anchors. The only concern I have is possibly the headstock snapping but putting 9s on it feels like it will avoid that issue because I'm not giving it massively high string tension. And Gibson does have that camo finish on a Les Paul. Primarily the Zack Wilde model, but it has the bullseye graphic too, and there was a few other full camo graphics in the past. Honestly Gibsons play perfectly fine and stay in tune beautifully, assuming you actually know how to set your guitars up properly. But I absolutely agree on price.... I'd love a beautiful cherry sunburst custom, but I refuse to pay over 4000 for one 😆 Also, I had to read the description to see this was a sponsored video. They sent you that guitar free to review. What's the deal with the whole "Gibsons don't stay in tune" thing? Mine doesn't seem to suffer from any instability, and it's not constructed any differently than any other average Les Paul. It's a 90's Classic, so it's got the 60s slim-taper neck (that did crack at one point due to a drop...that's definitely a weak point!). But as far as tuning, it's stable. It goes out of tune in-between sessions like all of my other guitars do, but once I've got it tuned, it stays there until I sit it down and it cools off.

The reason Gibson 's and most guitars go out of tune is because of poor setup work at the nut. The other reason I find often is people putting monster strings on a guitar set up for 9s or 10s. Any change to string guage will always require a set up after i.e. nut filing, neck relief and intonation. First thing I noticed on the SG you had on here ages ago was the horrible mods ,gimme 2 hours with that thing and i,ll make it stay in 100%. I play old cheap Jay Turser LP,s and with the proper fretwork and setup they kick ass, it,s all in the setup.

This exactly. I run 9s on my Les Paul since it came out of the box. It doesn't go out of tune any more so than my Fenders after 3 hour sessions. Almost rarely in fact do I need to tune it. Just properly stretch the strings before playing, and any time you over tune too high and you tune down, just stretch the slack back out you just released and tune back up to pitch, and it stays in tune. Simple common knowledge tuning.

As a guitar builder, I have always said Epiphone was better than Gibson. I would bet that 10S is made in the same factory. As far as tuning stability, it has nothing to do with the Kluson tuners. It is physically impossible for a worm gear to slip. The problem with Gibson is the nut and to a lesser extent the headstock angle. As far as the neck breaking, it's because Gibson in all of their stupidity, refuses to use a scarf joint, so there is short, weak grain, running through the weakest part of the neck. As far as neck through being better for sustain, thats just as big a myth as tone wood. Just makes it more difficult to repair

Glen - You've spent quite a bit of time ragging on Gibson's, so I finally have to weigh in a little bit here. First: Not all grovers are created equal. There are import grovers just like there's import anything else in the guitar industry. I doubt they would put tuners on that 10S that are 1/5th the value of the entire guitar. They probably rattle around when you take the string off as most cheap tuners do, even some with the "Grover" stamp (Source: experience. I've owned a few cheapo guitars in my time). With regards to the tuning stability of a Gibson (save for that atrocious 7 string SG abomination homeboy had on your show some years ago... yikes. They aren't all good), the problem can be solved in 3 easy steps: 1) Put pencil lead in the nut slots when you change the strings 2) Make sure to pull on the strings reeaaal hard so that they conform to the tuner post (aka "stretch" the strings) 3) Be sure to always tune up from flat, so the string doesn't bind on the nut and subsequently pull out of tune after a few moments of playing. If you put your big boy pants on, follow those easy steps, you too can play a Les Paul without sounding like sad clown music. You dont even have to get one of those ridiculous String Butler things. If you still require clarification, I'd be happy to make a video for you... time permitting. As for the headstock, yes I too wish they would implement a volute, but I've managed to not break any headstocks so far - maybe because I refrain from metal core style guitar-jitsu and don't use my LPs to shoot penalty shots at my local pond rink. In closing, Gibson's aren't perfect, but they aren't the hot sticky garbage you constantly make them out to be. P.S. Euge Valovirta already made a good video showing the basics of how to not fuck up a re-string and keep your guitar in tune: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpSWqH2Xbtt_m7M (Starts at 7:00) He's the fucking man.

I love my Gibson to death. It’s a great sounding guitar that I got a pretty good price from Gibsons Demo Shop on Reverb. However, to get it to play and stay in tune the way it does now, I had to replace ALL of the hardware. The NON COMPENSATED wraparound it came with I swapped out for an adjustable wraparound, and the tuners which were the “vintage style” button head Gibson tuners are now Klusons. The thing tunes and STAYS in tune. I love Gibson guitars (sometimes) but I shouldn’t have to sink another $200 into a $1700 guitar to make it do such a basic thing

Either Kluson or Gotoh made the original tuners and they're fine. They've been time tested to be good tuners.

I bought a used 2006 Gibson 70's reissue Goldtop with a pro hardshell travel case sometime ago from a guy. I yanked out the transistor pots it came with. The idea from Gibson was it made switching out pickups super easy but it didn't sound great and the idea was to mod this axe cuz I needed a 'hot' one for leads and metal. You would just unclip the pickup and put in another set. Anyway, I put in 50's wiring old school oil based pots with the huge orange drops capacitors. The 70's part of the guitar refers to the body style and the width of the neck. I replaced the stock p90's with the Slash pro Seymour Duncan Alnico II bridge and neck pickups and the chinese made switch with a USA made Switchcraft toggle switch. Then I took the guitar to a luthier to professionally setup. So it does stay in tune but $800 for the guitar, $210 for the pickups, $75 for the pots, $35 for the toggle, $65 for the pro setup = $1185. I use skinny top heavy bottom Ernie Balls and when I change the strings I do 1 string at a time so as not to mess with the bridge and intonation. Stays in tune for years now. But hells, if I could get a rad guitar for half that to use for gigging... well FUCK You, Glenn for not doing this years ago when I could've save me some bucks! jajaja! Now I'm looking at getting me an S10 baritone with tesla alnico V's for $650.

And this Chinese guitar at $550 would be worth $100 in a year if you could even sell it. Your Gibson will be worth what you paid for it.

Great job on your playing, Glenn. You've really improved over the years and it's quite visible. Gibsons are old news. You can get a lot more bang for your buck in lower priced brands. A sixth reason I'd get this over a Gibson is that cheaper guitars are, inherently, better to mod. If you're thinking of buying Gibson, consider this: if you have enough money for a Gibson, you also got money to buy a cheaper alternative and mod it to death. Get better pick ups, change the frets to something more comfortable, change the hardware, change the paint job... You can do ALL OF THAT instead of buying a Gibson and end up with something far more suited to your playing needs. I did the math once just for fun. For the price of just one Gibson Custom, you could buy two Epiphone Customs, a pair of Fishmanns, a 5150 3 50 watt combo and a ton of pedals and still come out spending less. It's one shinny toy vs everything you'll ever need as a metal guitar player playing gigs. Hell, in the scenario I just described you come out with a more "classic" sounding guitar and a more modern one. And that's just because I went to Epiphone instead of something like 10s or even ESP. Also, by the end I was really scratching my head on what else I could buy to match the price. Seriously. I had every essential pedal I could think of in there. Wah, overdrive, noise gate, delay, chorus, flanger, distortion, eq... A reverb seemed pointless because the combo already had it. There was still enough money to buy a mid tier squier, just to shake things up. That name on the headstock is just not worth the alternative by a LONG SHOT

You can get one of these Chibsons with the Gibson name on the headstock too if that is what floats a guy's boat!

I haven't played, touched, or even looked at this guitar, but I know it's going to be better because I'll convince myself it's so." I like your videos and reviews because they generally feel so honest. This one feels more like you're starting with a conclusion and working your way backwards. I also think the knock on Gibson longevity and durability is a bit disingenuous. There are examples over half a century old that are still all original and play well. Sounds good though. Perks of being able to hook up a cheap guitar to some of the best equipment available.
