What are your pros/cons of getting a husky as a puppy vs adult? Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!!

I loved the video Samy. My favorite part is the end. Leo’s face while Gelato is chewing the heck of that toy shows the amount a patience it takes to deal with a puppy all day. Thank you for creating this video. I hope to run into you & the dogs on a hike some day

Training, training, training. I got my Alaskan at 8 weeks old, and I was living alone and working full time for several weeks as he grew. I never encountered the problems listed in this video. After about two weeks, he was able to last from early morning to late afternoon to relieve himself. And never had to take him out at night. As for chewing, I gave him a chew toy and an old shoe. He was very content with that. I think it is partly because during the walks he could exercise to exhaustion, running off leash in the woods. As for being better off getting an adult dog, I would not. Simply put, you have no idea what training, treatment and habits the dog may bring with it. As I got mine from pup, I was able to train him off leash, obey commands, be attached to the home and be very gentle with children. Regarding health, again having a dog from pup we know the history and do not risk having unexpected or undisclosed health problems, yes, problems, not "issues". Listing a bunch of caveats for getting a dog seems like a good indicator that perhaps you shouldn't. A dog is not an appliance, piece of furniture or toy. It comes with obligations and responsibilities. The reality is that those obligations and responsibilities are far better fulfilled when raising the dog from pup. Of course, if your heart is set on giving a shelter dog a home, go for it. The bottom line is that a dog requires time, attention, patience and love, just like the rest of us. By the way, beautiful husky. Looks a lot like mine.

Smart dogs are more work to train, but also less work to care for. Mine took about the same amount of time, but the reward is being able to have him off leash in all environments and not worry about causing a fuss. He is very popular with other dog owners for his utter indifference to other dogs, where they wonder how he can stay put when their dogs simply do not listen when other dogs are around. He eats half my breakfast every morning. He doe not fetch more than twice, and on the third time he looks at me as if saying "nah, you fetch". He does not walk on his hind legs or rolls over or do other tricks. What he does do is protect us and challenges us to be smarter than he is. He drive us to be more active. If I don't take him out at the three appointed times for his daily walks, he starts singing near the neighbour's houses until I come out. Twice he has chased away a coyote that was eyeing me. He obeys the basics, behaves when needed and is a relentless pal who sits on you until you give in. No more needed or wanted.

Have had to rescue a husky/wolf puppy from a puppy mill earlier than normal but he turned out to be my animal soulmate. Had him 15 years. Then rescued an “unadoptable” senior husky. Had the canine dementia but she would get adopted and returned to the shelter at least three times before we took her in. Kept good care of her for her remaining 2 years. Special needs dog. Looking now for another husky but being selective. Only want a senior, special needs one that really needs a good home. I understand huskies and they get returned because people just think they are adorable (true) but people don’t understand them and their needs. I figure a senior would be just fine with me since I’m retired and can put some time into bonding and forming a great relationship with the dog. These dogs are special and deserve the best quality life in their remaining years. Thanks for the video. All true points about pipes vs. adults.

My mom and dad got a husky puppy about 2 years ago, and she was, a handful, to say the least. She's 2 years old now and really passive for her breed.

Samy youre so brilliant as always. We have a german shepard huskie mix, and his huskie traits show 100%. Been a tough journey at times, which we didnt expect. But hes at a year and a half old now, and is slowly slightly calming down. We love him no matter what.

My wife and I adopted a 2 year old husky. He is a good dog, but he isn't easy to train. He has the typical husky stubbernous. If you get a puppy they are much more willing to learn from you. Also with an adult you don't know about heir previous environment. also their is a mountain of information about puppies, not so with adult dogs.

It is very common for people to confuse independence with stubbornness. Working dogs are highly intelligent, creative and independent thinkers, such that owners who put them to work don't need to spend a lot of time with instruction or supervision. The downside is that if you are not strong, firm and confident, the dog will not consider you the alpha. That is why breeds such as retrievers and other very popular "family" dogs are so compliant. They have been bred for that very purpose. But if you are firm, consistent and assertive, the Husky will respond appropriately. But don't expect him to do tricks or fetch or other showy stuff. It is not their métier. They are bred for work or hard play. Put in the time and you will find him a blast.

One downside of getting an adult rescue is that you cannot redo the early socialization stage if the original owners or wherever the dog has been during that time neglected it. That can require a significant amount of additional work to overcome. My older sister never trained her GSD to go down stairs because she didn't want her dog going down the basement. Because of it, her dog never learned the finer motor control skills and coordination required to walk down stairs. She just jumps down the patio stairs which will become a significant risk of injury later and goes into some frantic sprint whenever she loses traction on floors. If she had been trained to walk down stairs one step at a time, she would likely have learned that it is much easier to retain traction by going slow or standing still.

Well, that depends. Mine sings (I call it that) and each song turns out to be communication. One is for "Where the hell are you? It's time for my walk". Another is "We are home" every time we return from a trip or a walk. Another is "Please walk faster, I want my lunch" at the end of our mid-day walk. The most poignant is the one "I want to come in, please". and then he stays for 15 minutes or so and then he wants out. I won't repeat what I say to him every time he does that. He is a blast

There’s always a reason why a dog ends up in a shelter and it’s usually because of severe behavioral issues such as separation anxiety and aggression. Half of this information is extremely opinionated and hypocritical. You got your dogs from a backyard breeder (Utah is infamous for the amount of backyard breeders) and you didn’t do your research before getting a husky. If you purchased from a reputable breeder you would know what to expect from your puppy in both behavior, temperament, and size. A rescue dog can still be extremely unpredictable and rescues/shelters have been known to lie or undermine issues just so they get their dogs adopted out. I prefer a reputable breeder over a rescue or some backyard bred dog any day. I own 5 huskies, all from reputable breeders and they are easy and amazing.

Actually, usually they end up in the shelter because people say they “don’t have time for them” and the issues have developed due to a lack of exercise, training, mental stimulation, etc. Just my experience after having helped 50+ dogs get rescued from the shelter for having “problems”, putting them into foster homes where they receive appropriate care, and getting adopted by vetted out owners :) They’re tough dogs for sure if you don’t fit their lifestyle needs!

Remember the saying when kids misbehave? "It's the parents, stupid". Well, with dogs "it's the owner, stupid". When people get a dog, they have this vision of the alpo commercials, and do not do the research, as you correctly state. They expect a biological robot that behaves just as in the movies or commercials. What they do not realize is that those dogs have gone through thousands of hours of training. Don't get a dog if you cannot put the time. Dogs are living creatures, with personalities and needs, just as a human child. For some people it is best to just visit "uncle Leo's dog" and leave it at that.
