My father's family is from Slovenia and my brother and I have been to visit them twice, once in summer, once in winter. We LOVE Slovenia for all the reasons you mention. Our family lives in Kamnik, Kranj and Ljubljana. We have stayed at Terme' Snovik and Pod Skalo. Both experiences were beyond delightful. We were planning a return this summer, but will wait until travel returns to something resembling "normal." After all, the country has "love" in it's name, it doesn't get better than that !!

The absolute BEST thing to do in Slovenia: Rent a car. Find a village that barely is visited by tourists at all. I don't think ugly villages exist in Slovenia, all I've been to have been beautiful. Get to the cafe (every village seems to have at least one), get cheap REAL local food, it will almost guaranteed be perfect. And meet the friendly, smiling locals, who often are more than happy to bump down at your table for a chat if you ask them to join. I've been around 35 countries, the rural areas of Slovenia is high up on my personal top list. Btw, Ljubljana is fantastic, but the countryside is even better.

Thanks so much for sharing! Planning on visiting Slovenia next year as an adjunct to the Adriatic side of Italy. Would love to know more about finding B&B's there. Did you travel mostly in the western half (other than driving from Zagreb)? We'll likely drive in from Venice, maybe spend a day or two on the Istrian peninsula, then Ljubljana and Bled. Awesome video, much appreciated!
@LandlockedLovebirds6 жыл бұрын
Joe Jacoby thanks for the compliment! We booked most of our lodging using booking.com. You can choose to search for apartments and Home stays in the search filters. Also check out Airbnb. Booking does a nice job with their rating system to help provide high quality options at fair prices. In Bled we stayed at Alp Pension, and we really enjoyed it. The rooms were split with separate living and sleeping areas, super clean, and well appointed. You can eat dinner at the guesthouse, and the owner was an amazing cook. Be sure to let them know if you want to join for dinner. We just showed up and they almost didn’t have enough for us. We only stayed in Bled and Ljubljana, but we drove all around Triglav National Park and the Soca River Valley. We crossed the border into Italy somewhere up in the mountains there, but it was heavy rain, so we didn’t venture too far across.

Thanks much! It looks in the video like you guys had a really great time there, very kind of you to share the info. Good tip too on the toll sticker, will make sure we pay attention to that! We like the same sort of travel - would rather rent a car, stay with local B&Bs, eat in the same places the locals do - much more fun than being led around on a tour.

@LandlockedLovebirds6 жыл бұрын
Colleen Delaney we rented through Oryx at Zagreb airport and dropped the car at Dubrovnik airport. Driving in Croatia and Slovenia was mostly pretty easy. Wide and well maintained roads and highways. Parking everywhere in Slovenia was pretty easy. Old town areas in Croatia presented a bit more trouble. Luckily, our lodging owners were good about helping us find free parking a walkable distance away from the crowded tourist areas.

I wonder, why nobody ever pronounce Slovenija like we do. We do not pronounce "e" like in an English word "freedom", but like the second "e" in a word "event" or even better the firts "e" in a word "venue", just a little bit narrower. The funny fact in our language is nevertheless (among millions of others :)) that "e" in can be all the way from not pronounced at all, or very narrow, almost "e" in English, to very wide like in "America". Oh, yeah! How come, you do not pronounce "Ameerica"? We should say "Amirika" then 🤗
@LandlockedLovebirds5 жыл бұрын
Zdenka Redek 😂😂 we tried our best! Thanks for the pronunciation tip. We’re headed back to Slovenia in November, and we will try to pronounce it correctly this time. Vowels can be pronounced all different ways in English, so when we try to pronounce them in other languages, we usually make a mockery of them. Thanks! Cheers!

Sarah me we went in early June. The owner of the guesthouse that we stayed in said that it rarely rains for several days that time of year. We would maybe suggest July or August for a better chance at sunny weather though.
@LaliLile6 жыл бұрын
Landlocked Lovebirds hi guys, I’m from Slovenia also (Ljubljana). If I may suggest, don’t go in July or August as there is much more tourists visiting us at that time. June is the best month to visit us, you were just extremely unlucky with weather. Ohh and don’t forget to visit Postojnska jama (Postojnas’ cave). One of the most beautiful underground places in the world with unique animal species.

MAN...! That music(?) was annoying and distracting. Is it a 'millennials' obsession to have it on so many of their vlogs?? I stayed in Radovlica, an attractive, old town about 30 miles from the capital, but only 5 or so miles from Bled, and well-positioned for the mountains and castles, etc. As you suggest, Bohinj is more natural, un-touristy. Because of the mountains in the north, flash storms get channeled towards Ljubljana in the summer months. I got caught on the motorway outside the capital and it was a ferocious downpour - windscreen wipers couldn't manage. Need to have a car or hire there. The bus service is good but it will lose you time. Sadly, what still exists of their rail system is falling apart - bad mistake! Well worth going if only for the cycling and walking. Food is v.good - a kind of fusion European. Most people under 40 speak near fluent English. Those that want beaches go to Croatia and, of course, the Italians, Austrians...have their own Alps, so Slovenia should stay quiet for a while yet, I hope.
