I’m so proud to be Slovenian! I live in Cleveland, Ohio, where there is a tight-knit Slovenian community and culture. All of my grandparents emigrated from there, and I grew up learning how to dance polka, attend “Slovenian school” and a Slovenian summer camp and cook Slovenian foods :) also visited there for my uncles traditional wedding and it was wonderful!

What? Seriously? So many Slovenians in Ohio, I never would have guessed. Do you speak Slovenian?

Jen Mishelin No :( unfortunately Slovenian school didn’t really teach us fluent Slovenian. It was more about the culture and history. I know how to read Slovenian (then again, it’s really not that hard because it’s phonetic lol) and quite a few words but definitely not enough to understand a conversation in Slovenian. First, we are not the "literal centre" by any measure. Second if you ask other countries we are EASTERN europe. Central europe is a made up concept by us and the Czech because we very desperately wanted to "escape" the fact that we are eastern europe. But we cant escape it. If you ask germans they wont tell you they are "central europe" but western europe and they will be correct. And the geographical center is in Germany. Right! And, Slovenians consider them self culturally as middle European To clarify my comment; of course Slovenians are slavic (language and a huge part of their culture), but they wouldn't see them selfs as east or south Europeans. A big part of Slovenian culture is more part of middle/central Europes culture, take a walk in Ljubljana and look at the architecture to see what I mean. Also the mindeset that Slovenia is part of middle Europe was emphasized after the independence of Slovenia to distance themselves from Belgrade. Orientationwise Slovenia wanted to be "more like western/central Europe" so to speak, neighbors like Italy or Austria became mor important in that period.

It's a pretty complex topic for a foreigner to try to explain….so let's just make it clear, we are definetly Slavic , but in terms of our character and culture it's safe to say that we have some Germanic traits, there is also some Italian influence especially in the West and Southwest of the country. We are sort of considered 'Germans of the Balkans', if you ask our Slavic neighbours south of us, they will often say that we are reserved or maybe a bit more rational&orderly than other Slavs in the Balkans. There is some truth to this. Even our most famous architect Jože Plečnik had a vision of Ljubljana as small Athens, because he noticed that the city was starting to look too German/Austrian...so he wanted to bring back that Mediterranean feel.

I am Slovenian too. The most amazing fact about my homeland for me is, while other countries' anthems talk about war and rise of power and stuff, Slovenian anthems is a few verses of a poem called Zdravljica which basically means A toast, as in cheers. And it speaks about how all nations should be equal and each others neighbor rather than foe. And the whole poem of Zdravljica speaks about wine beautiful girls, having fun and friendship. Another cool things is that Slovene language has not only plural and singular, but "dual" as well. Yep! We speak differently if something regards one person, 2 or 3. Who would have thought that this robust sounding family of slavic languages could be so romantic. :)
@Niall69Irish6 жыл бұрын
Yeah and fun fact - the author of our national anthem 'Zdravljica' was an alcoholic in his later years and he died from cirroshis. He was the greatest slovenian poet tho.. we even celebrate Prešernov dan (Prešeren day) every year on 8 February, which is marking the anniversary of his death in 1849... he wrote Zdravljica in 1844 and it was published in the year before his death -1848 ....btw, dolenjska, moja deželaa

Yugoslavia however did not align themselves with any of the two block. Even more, Tito lead the effort and successfully created what became known as the Non-aligned movement (NGM ) or 3rd block, a unity of countries all over the world that didnt chose a side in the cold war. Some of the other countries in this block included India and Egypt. The movement still exists today encompassing almost half of UN nations.

As a Czech, I feel a relatively strong relationship with Slovenia. We Czechs and Slovenians have Slavic roots, language and mentality, but at the same time we have quite visible cultural, architectural and genetic influences of German/Austrian entities. I have never been to Slovenia, but from the things I have seen and heard, it seems to me that we really have a lot in common, it even seems to me that more than we Czechs have with Poles and Slovenians with Croats or Serbs. @ultra_SANS The unbeatet I mean, it is hard, but it really depends on the person if it's hard for them or not, by it being their native language, the only hard part I'd say about it, is the mess about singular and plural. Also, if you wanna speak formal, you have to know how to form sentences perfectly. I use more of a "home" Type of talk, which annoys every teacher haha. But I really don't like Slovenia, I'm planning to move abroad as soon as I can, cause I don't wanna live here. Sure, the nature is really pretty but like, I'm definitely a city person (I grew up in one) so I wanna move to a bigger city. I love to admire nature, but wouldn't live just in the middle no where with grass everywhere mountains in the back, woods and a lake. Yeah, sounds pretty but not my type of life style

It was written in National Geographic, somewhere in the 30s that Slovenians like to marry Germans. It was because of similar attitude towards hard work, fairness, discipline and other cultural similarities. That's why many of us still have German surnames. But in the last decades we had 50% population increase - I guess among the biggest immigration waves in the world - due to immigration from Balkan region things are getting different.

You know only slovenians and croatians define slovenia as central european country. Every other country defines it as southern/southeastern contry

@@narnex3179 Actually Wikipedia defines it as central Europe, and my geography teacher in school defined it as central Europe and everything i've ever come across that's ''official'' defines it as central Europe. Southern central Europe.
