Thanks to those of you correcting me on the image stabilization in the 24-70 f/2.8. The f/2.8 versions from Nikon, Tamron and Sigma Art do have IS. The two Canon 24-70 f/2.8 doesn't - however, the f/4 version does. My bad ;)

While everyone must decide what gear works best for them, I agree that the 24-105 is a workhorse. It was my go-to lens for walking around and traveling with one lens for 20 year when I shot Canon (24-105 f/4 L). When I moved to Sony last year, the 24-105 was the first lens I bought. Yes, I use plenty of other lenses when I know what I am going to be shooting and can plan the look I want, or have a pack full of kit to haul around, but I can walk out the door with the 24-105 confident that I will be able to capture a well framed, well exposed shot in almost any situation I am likely to encounter. Of course, if I was going out to shoot sports, this would not be the lens I would take. I have always owned 24-70 f2.8 as well, but I rarely use it. Like you, I find that I miss the extra reach when I am using the 24-70 far more often than I miss the extra stop when using the 24-105. These choices work for me. Your mileage may vary.

I've had the Canon 24-105 f4 for about 4 years, it has been my go-to lens for almost everything. It is amazingly versatile as you've said, sharp, not too heavy. However I have just bought the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC (stabilisation) to try out for a bit. I still have the 24-105 so will have to work out whether I'm happy with losing 35mm of focal length, could I get over that with a long lens? I did have a 70-200 f4, but I didn't use it often as I preferred to just carry the 24-105. It's gonna be tough to decide.

Thanks for this highly informative video Mads! After watching many KZbin videos, I was unsure which zoom to go for and left me mistakenly thinking that an f2.8 lens would be 'better', but your video cleared this up and helped me understand that based on my needs, a 24-105 f4 lens would be perfect (for taking landscape shots) as I can also edit these in Lightroom afterwards. I have just ordered this lens, so thanks again :)

Great points. I would also add that with today’s DSLR/mirrorless cameras it is easy to adjust ISO to compensate for exposure at f/4 versus f/2.8. But having that extra 35 mm of focal length can’t be added so easily. I like the perspective in the 85-105 mm range for portraits which makes the face look very natural and proportional.

Recently went through the thought processes about 24-70 or the 24-105 to fill my gap as I already had a 16-35 and 70-200, I chose the 24-105 and just love its versatility, maybe an astro specific lens next year, if I am doing a wild camp and looking to reduce weight then the 24-105 will give me great focal range coverage, I am loving the results up to now :-)

I tried a 24-70 F2.8 on my full frame 6D and was really disappointed with the zoom range. All it seemed to give me was a little bit back and a little bit further than normal vision. So I went for the 24-105 F4. I have three fast primes 24/50/85 so that covers me for low light work. It just gives that bit extra reach.
@SmallSpoonBrigade2 жыл бұрын
That's not surprising. The 24-70mm lenses tend to be intended for use with a 70-200mm or similar. It's part of how they get away with that range. You can cheat it a bit by cropping, but doing so gives up some of the improvements on noise that come with higher resolutions.

Do you use the 12-24 f2.8 or the 12-24 f4? Do you find much use for the 12-16 range, I currently have the 16-35 f2.8 and am debating whether to add a 14mm f1.8 (for landscape and astrophotography) or swap the 16-35 for a 12-24. Also, I was wondering if you have looked at the Tamron 35-150. It is reportedly, much sharper than the 24-105, especially in the narrower apertures I want to use for landscape, I find the 24-105 great up to f/8. By f/11 it needs significant sharpening and I don’t find it useful at f/16 (on an A7RIV). Finally, I saw your test of the Tamron 28-200. Did you replace the 24-105 with that?

Also, I recently saw a video from Nigel Dansen about merging photos... and you make the same point: Sometimes is better to have 24, 35, or 50mm and merge photos similarly as you would for panorama. You can get great results, sometimes better. The f4 is only a struggle for 1 thing: Astrophotography. But most of my photography also doesn't need the f2.8. Great share, Thanks!

What's your tradeoff between f2.8 and f4 aperture for 24-70 and 24-105 lenses respectively? I am currently in a dilemma whether to go for 24-70 or 24-105 because one offers high aperture and other offers extra telephoto range with cheaper price too. So if I am spending that extra $600 for 24-70 f2.8, I need to have a strong reason, but I am not finding convincing conclusion yet. Choosing f2.8 gives that extra DOF which is required for portrait photography which I will be missing in f4, so would like to understand your perspective on that. Bdw, I am looking for all purpose lense that covers landscape, portrait and street with 6D mark2.

I got the Sony GM 24-70mm. reasons why over this lens: 1) Had to start with one, and the 24-105mm is almost never sold used, and is new 1350 euro, so there is not much pressure to buy it fast. The gm had. 2105 euro new,, but i bought it 1500 euro pristine new (the best price yet used, only few times happened). 2) on nikon it's my most used lens. So i went for the best in Sony land. 3) i'm a sucker for corner sharpness. Even though i'm sure at f8 almost hard to see, the size and complexity almost certainly will show corner softness at f4 and sometimes F5.6. Shooting often panorama's at 24mm, (with the zoom) on nikon, any sharpness fall off reduction helps a lot. 5) 105mm IS interesting, but 70mm covers most of my needs and if needed i crop (36mp is a lot, sony has even more, and i might buy Sony a7rIV, enough to crop).6) see just before, i might buy Sony A7RIV, wich will require very good performance, on A7RIII i know the G lens 24-105mm is damn close in sharpness, but seeing how even primes have soft corners on R4, i'd only want the best for it (sadly almost nobody talks about 24-105mm and R4, curious how it performs).7) rendering. Even though i edit all pictures, having a standard better rendering is handy, and this is the case with the GM. Im strongly considering the 100-400mm GM it get raving reviews, give 200mm more, and 70-100mm is not much, have enough sets of images zooming step by step to prove that, either 85mm prime, or just 70mm cropping will achieve that. Now the absolute most tempting feature of the 24-105mm is the OSS. I'm addicted to the VR on the nikon lens. Like on a shaking speed boat, i think without VR i would have 0 succesful images in ISO 100 '(i'm a low ISO camper). But the GM doenst have this and the G lens has it. If it comes used around and i have the bucks i will very likely not be able to resist to buy the G lens. Like if i plan a crazy heavy hike, i think the weight then could be usefull, as will the OSS for more allround package. When weight doesn't matter i will shoot GM. I'm very young still, and i in fact love mass in lenses (makes it easier to hold, and keep stable), while my strong muscles have something to put their energy on :)

It is even better if you shoot with an R7 and use a speedbooster adapter. Then it is as bright as an f2 lens with a effective zoom range of ~26mm to 116mm. And if you also carry a basic adapter, then you get someting like a 38mm to 168mm and a bit more macro.

How is the dust sealing on this particular RF lens? I've heard photographers having a nightmare with Tamron and Sigma's current 24-70 due to dust getting sucked in to the lens due to poor sealing on the extending lens barrel. To your knowledge, does the RF F4 24-105mm L have a filter between the extending barrel and the main barrel to prevent dust from getting sucked into the lens? Or in your extensive use of the lens, have you detected any issues with dust [long term use]?

The 24-105mm works OK for landscapes but I find it make flat images. No 3d feel from this lens. For people it is not great at all.

Yep, my 24-105 Canon f/4 L is my first choice for walking around.

I like 24-70 f2.8 more. And if I want an all around lens. I wound choose super zoom like 28-200 or 28-300. 105mm is not really much close than 70mm.

Between the sigma 24-105 F4 and Tamron 28-200 f2.8; what you prefer for Sony A7iii? :)

How would you compare the 24-105 to the 28-300 both being Canon L series lenses?

Fantastic video, also sidenote: It seems that every Sony landscape photographer has some unreal looking work.. these are stunning. Not saying it's the reason your work is good at all but just a funny thing I noticed on youtube.

Damn your explanation on less foreground & more background has made think in different perspective, this give me reason to try it. Thank you.

Almost all my landscape photography is with a Sony RX10ii and the longer focal lengths are the most interesting. Wide angle is usually boring, the same waves on the beach photo in every tropical art gallery

Bought the Sony a7iii last week and have ordered the 24 - 105 as my first full frame lens.

I have ordered this lens and hope to also get such great shots in the future. You have developed a great instinct for composition and are able to explain it well. Thanks! I do not have the time for getting out and travel to do such Photography but your work sure inspires me to want to! Your love of photography and nature seems to make you a good peaceful down-to-earth person.
