We all agree ducks that are cute and we would love to have them as pets but here are 5 things you didn't know about ducks that could possibly change your mind on ever having ducks as pets
alright
5. They are messy - Sadly, the cuteness can wear off pretty quickly as you realize how unbelievably messy they are! They poop around the clock and it will be literally everywhere. When not free roaming and confined to a smaller enclosure, it really is quite the site! They will tread it down and mash it about…you will start to think they’re doing it on purpose just to get a reaction!
The clean pool or tub of water will be clean for all of five minutes. When your head is turned, it will soon become a muddy, sludgy, gunky brown mess! In fact, any water source in your garden, left unmanned with have the same fate!
Whilst it may seem like a good idea to counter this problem by not providing a large body of water, you should consider that you would be denying them their natural, instinctual behavior that they really enjoy.
So, with keeping ducks comes the daily responsibility of cleaning water sources and pens, unless of course, you keep them free roaming with a large, natural pond.
4. They will eat anything and everything they find - Ducks Might Eat Your Garden, as they love pecking and eating everything in it's way, They also eat insects such as mosquitoes, grasshoppers, ticks, worms, and roaches. Sometimes, they may even go after larger pests like snakes, mice, and frogs.
3. Easy target for predators - Since pet ducks usually are unable to fly, they are a big target when it comes to local wildlife predators. That means that you will need to provide them with hawk covers, which should be placed over their pens. When outside, your pet ducks will also need to be supervised and protected from potential coyote attacks. You have to be more predator aware when you have ducks.
Now some might wonder, ducks would be much safer if they are kept indoors, But Please DO NOT keep a duck as a “house” pet. They are NOT suited to an indoor lifestyle. Although it may make you happy to keep your duck indoors, understand that you are being cruel to the duck, as they need to live outdoors.
2. Ducks cannot live alone - Ducks are social animals, They are not solitary creatures and will quite easily become depressed and lonely ; which will make it difficult for them to survive or thrive. ... Hence NEVER keep just one duck; that is cruel. You need at least 3-4 ducks for your ducks to be happy.
In fact the more, the merrier cause When a duck loses their companion they would get quite upset but having more ducks makes it easier for that duck to move on and live happily with the rest of the bunch.
1. Ducks are loud - If you aren’t bothered by the noise, be prepared that your neighbours might be! One of the pros is they are social and like to communicate, well this may also be a con as when they’re in a group, it just takes one to let out a quack to set a chain reaction where they’re all at it! They certainly do love a good chat! The question is do you and your neighbours?!
