Riesling is the grape that everyone talks about but so few really drink. It’s great and sooooo underrated and it will never change. Even on my channel there are so many comments about it. Drop a video about it, not a big hit hahaha. Same in the industry in real life…

For the riesling lovers out there (such as myself) it's kinda good that it's underrated though since you can get absolutely amazing wines at a steal compared to what other wines of the same quality would cost. So it's really a double edged sword but I'm stacking up on bottles right now anyway 🙂
@drmatthewhorkey

@@dannesism Totally agree... I crack up when people say, 'how can we get people to like Riesling more?' It's a grape that isn't for everyone, the acidity is too sharp for a lot of people. It's fine, prices are fair and there is enough Riesling to satisfy us geeks.

Hahahah, I like how You compare the “real life” with “youtube life”. Yes, everyone knows the grape, but rarely do we know what a great potential it holds! 😉 Cheers! 🍾🥂

Yes, I agree! But I sometimes also think about the producers. Riesling is not an easy grape to grow. And the fact that You invest a lot of energy and love in it, but no-one is willing to pay the same price as for top Chardonnay- that sometimes saddens me. 🤷‍♀️ But of course, I am also looking for bargains and Riesling almost always is one. 😉

@@NoSediment I'd argue that if you do something you love for a living it's not about the monetary value you can sell what you make by doing what you're doing. There's a deeper calling if that makes any sense. Sure financial reward would've been pretty awesome so don't get me wrong, but if you're really passionate about something it goes way deeper than that

Very entertaining video , my self being a fan and active Riesling drinker , I would say that it is not understood rather than unappreciated. I am a foreign living in Germany , and when I talk about Riesling to the regular guest and basic wine consumer ( we have two restaurants ) , 70% would prefer Italian wine , but as soon as I serve and invite a sip on a glass the conversion rate goes to 95% . Love Riesling in all varieties and different styles and terroirs

You might be right, yes it is definitely misunderstood as well. ☺️ My point for Riesling being underrated is because it doesn’t get the same prize and almost never dictates the similar price points as the same quality and age-ability whites from Chardonnay, for example. I love Your comment about the conversion going up with Riesling. 🙌 wine should spark the conversations always - and Rielsing alone can do that amazingly! 💥 Cheers!

Back in the 1980s fine German Rieslings were an unknown, under-rated, hidden jewel. They were hard to find, hard to research, and nobody wanted to even talk about them. But for those who did their homework there were rewarded. For example, 1976 Scharzhofberger Auslese (white cap from Egon Muller) for $23. The 1970s had 3 truly great years and most wine lovers at that time turned their noses up at the very idea of something other than the usual Chardonnay and Cabernet.

Great story! 🙌 WOW. As I understand from German winemakers, locally they knew and have always enjoyed their own wines. While wines of not the highest quality were shipped to export markets- maybe that was the reason? People associated it with poor, everyday quality, while in fact, 💎 were made! 🥲

Your videoes are great. I'm always looking forward to seeing them. Riesling is my favorite white wine grape, especially when it is grown in Mosel. But I get the impression that quite a few wine lovers feel the same way, so I don't think Riesling is underrated. Two grapes that I believe are underrated are Assyrtiko from Santorini and Xinomavro from Naoussa.
@NoSediment

I understand what You are saying, however for a wider public Riesling still is a wine often associated with sweetness. Yes, more engaged wine consumers will love it, I also do, but when doing the masterclasses, people usually are surprised that Riesling can age. 🤷‍♀️

I’ve been a huge fan of Riesling since a young age. It started with my parents having a weak spot for German Eiswein and often let me taste. But it wasn’t until years later that I discovered and fell in love with dry Riesling - and to this day it’s the single variety I have the most of in my celler (with Chardonnay coming in at a close second). Another withe grape variety that I’m a big fan of and I believe is underrated is Grüner Veltliner - almost as versatile as Riesling, delicious and has a lot to offer in terms of QPR.

Great video Agnes and fun content. I don't know if Riesling is underrated or underappreciated, maybe a bit of both? In many markets and in wine consumers opinion it still has a "label" of being sweet and not such high quality. It is probably the most versatile white cultivar in regards to food pairing and usually offers great QPR. I admire you for highlighting all of the main Riesling regions around the world; it's true that it does truly transmit terroir. Here in Taiwan/Asia dry Riesling usually comes from Alsace, though dry German Riesling is slowly becoming more available. I am hoping in the future Aussie, Finger Lakes and Austrian Riesling will be more readily available.

Thank You for Your input. I guess ‘under appreciated’ is also good way to describe Riesling. And yes, it is often associated with somewhat sweeter style. 🤔 But if I am being completely honest, then bone dry wines just for the sake of being dry, are not my favourite wines - I like balance . 🤔😉

Very popular grape in Australia. But with age it develops strong kerosene or petrol notes which some people find off putting. Crawford River from Victoria is absolutely my favourite Australian Riesling followed by Polish Hill bottlings which are a sub zone of Eden Valley. Best producer is Grosset.

Not a lot of selection of Riesling’s in my local stores, most of what I’ve tried have been from the Mendocino area in Northern California. So will have to turn to online ordering to try any of the Reisling recommendations from across your videos. As shipping costs will often be more than the bottles, I want to maximize my orders. This leads me to an off topic question that I don’t think you have a video on yet. Do you have an specific recommendations for Gewurztraminers?
@NoSediment

It is a grape I open quite rarely, not because I wouldn’t like it, but rather because it is quite difficult to find a nice example that would also be affordable. I don’t mind Hugel and Trimbach examples from Alsace. Also some exiting examples in Alto Adige can be found. It is a tricky grape variety to grow and vinify yet best examples are truly amazing . 🏆

The sugar content of the grapes is much higher today than in the past. The values in some regions are sometimes twice as high as in the 1960s and1970s. More sugar in the grapes means higher alcohol levels in the wine, which is not necessarily a good thing. Alcohol carries flavours. If a wine’s alcohol content amounts to 13% or 14% rather than 11%, the taste, fermentation process and ageing behaviour change. That is why somewhere in the future we may be speaking of a different style of wine when tasting Riesling.
@NoSediment
@NoSediment Жыл бұрын
You are completely correct. 🙌 better exposure sites were preferred for the longest time, nowadays however, I see winemakers looking even towards northern slopes (where possible and allowed) in order to limit sugar production in grapes. 🍾

I dont understand how is Riesling underrated? its a beloved child of geeks. it always ends up on lists, it has high ratings on vivino and everybody knows about it… maybe you mean underpriced? maybe but I dont see how Riesling can be considered anywhere near as underrated grape. only couple white grapes of the world are more popular than Riesling, sure it is behind Chard, Sauv Blanc and Pinot Grigio😅
@NoSediment
@NoSediment Жыл бұрын
Well, I do think Riesling is underrated. And I explain that in my video - the fact that something is known or ends up in the wine list does not mean it is appreciated for what it is. It doesn’t get the same praise as Chardonnay yet it lives longer, offers way more style wise and yet never scores the same price point. 🤷‍♀️ I could go on and on… 🫣
@Ruirspirul
@Ruirspirul Жыл бұрын
@@NoSediment yes, I understand all that but out of thousands of white grape varietals of the world it is weird to call one underrated because it does not get praised as much worlds number one most popular grape Chardonnay. definition of underrated is a bit off between me and you. to me underrated white grape is Savagnin😁
@NoSediment
@NoSediment Жыл бұрын
@@Ruirspirul we each have our favourite grape. 😉 But for Riesling to be planted as widely as it is and still be associated with easy drinking semi sweet wines and almost never with ageworthy example of white wines is probably the greatest reason why it is underrated for me. And Savagnin in general dictates much higher prices than Riesling, but that is not to say I don’t like it. 😉 Cheers’ 🥂
