Love what you said here but I think the biggest point that's being missed is something my teacher Mark Baxter said and that is "The impression you make on a listener is determined by the depth of your passion, not the height of your range". In other words, you can have all the vocal tricks in the world and still not move anyone. Why? Because it's quite evident that the singer is more concerned with the gimmicks and not the message of the lyric. It's as if the lyrics are an afterthought, for if they actually listened, perhaps they would realize that it doesn't always require a bunch of histrionics. I call it shallow singing; like a shallow person who only cares about what they look like on the outside but didn't bother to do any work on the inside. The same can be true with singing. I find this particularly true with younger singers who are all concerned with how high and loud they can sing, and how many notes they can execute. Singing high and loud doesn't make you the better singer; it just means you can sing higher and louder. That's it. Tone is the first thing people hear. It is the foundation, the cake. Range, power, and agility are the icing (who wants just a whole bunch of icing?). This is nothing new though, for when you think of operas where the higher voices are the heroes and the heroines, while the lower voices are the bad guys and the bitches, you realize this has been going on for a long time. Gladys Knight does not have this big wide range but let me tell you when she sings, with that tone of hers, you believe every word she sings.

I have listened to foreign songs where I was moved and my impression on it is not that far from the song’s actual meaning. And most of such songs were not sung on belty high vocal range.

THANK YOU!!! I was feeling crappy because I’m an alto and there are some Ariana songs I’ve tried singing and just couldn’t quite make it sound right. I do think there’s growing room but if I’m honest, my solid range is probably only E3 to Bb4 and maybe C5. When it comes to the 1st point, I usually take Vocal Range and Controlled Range as 2 separate things. My vocal coach always tells me that even though my voice peaks at A6, it'll take long before I can actually use it (I usually don't go past B5), so he calls it "useless range" lol

Range doesn't matter as much if you write your own material, but if you want to cover songs that have a wide range than it does matter. If you want to cover songs in their original key than range does matter as well. My complaint is vocal coaching courses or videos geared toward range extension should have a disclaimer stating that your results will vary and not everyone can increase their range by an octave (or whatever) even if they put in the work and understand all the concepts.

I only sing alone for my own enjoyment. I play a little guitar and sometimes want to show family & friends, but I know they won't recognize some of the songs unless I sing. Exactly i have a range goal and that is 2.5 octaves of C3-F5 and for some reason i am having a real issue growing my range from above Eb5 to the E5. I don`t want or need to work towards a 3 octave range or something like that. Someones vocal range is only an added benefit if your all ready a good singer but it should not determine wheter you are percived as a good singer or not

I feel this is more about what you value in a vocalist rather than what is or isn't important. That being said, a lack of range and power sinks a bridge like nothing else. I find myself "fixing" the peak as I am singing along in my head and I shouldn't have to do that. Diane Warren songs sung by singers without breath-taking upper registers is a prime example of this.

True.. I can force an F2 from the pits of my throat. Strain a hideous E5. And then Screech a Bb6 all day. But in the end all I'm really comfortable are C3s or sometimes just D3s. Belting out till G4 with support and rare resonance moments. And sustain head voice till F5-G5. I doesn't matter if your range is 3-4 octaves when you can barely singing in half of it. It's about being smart with the amount of range you have and learning to extend that range without hurting yourself

I enjoyed what you had to say here. I am learning a lot from you. I would like to give you some respectful feedback. Please consider not adding music to the background. That music was pretty annoying but it sometimes made it hard to make out your words and also makes it so that anyone watching one of your videos while having their own music playing in the background has to choose between their music and yours and if they don't have the option of turning off their background music (me right now), the two create quite a cacophony. You don't need music unless you are singing to it. It doesn't add to the quality of your video. In fact, it detracts.

Thank you so much. As a tenor I feel a lot of pressure singing songs that are quite high. I don't have a good mix so singing notes especially like an A4 are hard for me. That's why I always try to sing around that note. I'd rather sing a B4 or a C5 with a very heady mix just because it easier for me. An A4 is just on my passagio and I'm not sure to whether sing with a chesty mix or head dominant want. I can't balance yet so I usually stay at a healthy G4. It may not be Zayn Malik or Sam Smith high. But with good execution you can make mediocre notes sound outstanding

John Samama Are you a high Tenor? It is better to go head voice dominant for sure it will be less stressful and easier on your voice. Sometimes your passagio can differ with different vowel sounds. Perhaps you can use that to you advantage. If you are able to find a sound that you chest out then that gives you an option, an alternative.

Mariah's went outside her healthy range (along with not taking care of it) and paid the price. Mariah's range and discipline fell off a cliff which is why she has had to lip sync her last few public performances. Mariah's only vocal trick was octave runs.

The only situation where range actually matters is when you wanna sing a song with a really wide range, like for example When The Party's Over has a 2 octave wide melody so it's no joke. If the original song has notes that you cannot access then lower the key or sing low harmony.

Great Video! Vocal range is like the most overrated thing when it comes to rating/judging singers. The only thing i disagree with is the healthy aspect. I actually don't care if a singer does something that's not really healthy. As long as it sounds good and as long as the singer can freely choose to do it and can control it (connected or not) - it's part of his/her (sung) range. ...just check Nina Hagen. Mariah Carey also stated that going out of your range can intensify and therefor benefit your vocal - performance and that does this in most of her songs, though she knows it takes a toll on her voice.

Thanks for watching! The reason health matters is because of longevity. If you can't sing 25 years from now 😀because of something you did 20 years prior, you won't be happy. Longevity in singing matters, especially if this is your career, just like your legs matter if you want to be as independent as possible! The "safe zone" of vocal technique definitely can be limiting in terms of expression, but that's a cost some singers are willing to pay! But thanks for sharing!!! Blessings!

O'Neil Gerald I get your point. And it's true. The thing is, some singers actually accept a slight deterioration over the years. That's why I said: check Nina Hagen. She knows that she can't sing like she could 20 years before anymore, so she doesn't even try. Her high operatic notes are gone, so she developed her already impressive low register even more, now she has some of the most amazing lows i've ever heard from a female singer (bass/baritone -range) She did exactly what you said: she made more out of less. And to me, her singing ability is not diminished by the fact that she damaged her voice heavily - she knew exactly what she was doing back then and willingly 'paid the price' I like this approach to singing. It's a little bit like accepting getting older and don't dress like you are 20 when in fact you are already 50.... I think the best way is something in between - care for your voice but also take some risks here and there.

My favorite singers barely crack a third octave, they know how to use that range they have been given. Naturally that means my favorite singers are almost all female, because guys have an unfair advantage when it comes to potential range. Female singers with great low notes impress me a lot more than those with whistles.

Brax1982 I'm a Contralto and l still struggle with my chest register. I tried to learn to sing on and off as a grown adult for years with little success. I had informal lessons with different people. One told me "you may be an alto", "you have a pretty low voice...for a girl (he gave me a strange look)" I didn't really believe it because falsetto was easy and chest voice was a lot of effort and feels immoveable. Sometimes when l wasn't over thinking it l could reach extreme low notes along side Jazmine Sullivan or Toni B, or I would sing with a high Mezzo and l think, l think my voice is lower than hers? I damaged my voice singing unhealthily, (probably too high) and gave up. The damage left me in crippling pain if l tried to speak louder in a certain range and my voice dropped to a weak, lower pitch mumble. This really took a hit on my self esteem. Sometimes if l spoke in a certain range l got a metallic rattle (someone said to me).. Another told me l sounded like Janis Joplin. In that time l felt something else was happening with my voice. There were instances in my life purely with my voice addressed me as Sir or l got mistaken for my brother. My voice got lower and darker! Spontaneously l could sing tenor notes when l sing along with them (Daniel Ceasar and Zayn Malik). I couldn't ignore that anymore. So I've been rehabilitating my voice. It's much better now. It took a huge leap of faith. I still had doubts about my voice. But with that thought in mind I've never made so much progress in my singing. I can use chest voice! The chest voice l speak with! That's my true voice. I am working on that huge chunk of chest voice that had missing, what l had wanted and craved for for so long. I think part of the problem is when l sing l don't really 'hear' myself. I think the dark colour of my chest register is now difficult to "hear" than a brighter colour voice that l had in my younger years. My voice had turned androgynous, but that's something l learned to embrace, knowing l don't sound like most women do (at first the low sounds scared me, I didn't know if they were healthy, l couldn't believe they came from me). I had previously said to myself, I would love to have that dark timbre in my voice, it's just super warm.... It came true. 😃 I thought contraltos were super rare. They're like unicorns the way people speak about them. Sometimes they would even explain away a contralto as a pushed down Mezzo and it frustrates me a lot because no one singer sounds the same, and that most contraltos sound perfectly feminine, not all of them sound masculine.

Vocal range is a really complexed thing the fact is most people have a two to two and a half octaves where they sound the best. There is a tendency to over sing and add riffs and runs which is fine but it's overdone.

I think many don't like range and vocal dynamics (runs, growls, squalls, scats etc..) because they can't sing to them! We always wonder why dynamic singers aren't rated better (most listened to) singers than simple style singers. Well... it's simply because we can't sing to them! Selfish right? Lol. Human nature! Even he said "it's not fair"! Singers are artists! You may not think that Picasso should have put a color or image in a certain place, but would he be himself without it? I don't think it's fair to say that an artist is adding things that aren't needed simply because you don't personally like there placement! That's their unique touch. If we didn't add uniqueness, there would be many singers that sound like Brittany, Jessica, Mariah, or Cristina...Oh...too late! 🤦‍♀️ Ariana does nothing for me vocally. I think her voice is an under developed, Mandy Moore version on Mariah Carey. But that's my opinion! As a vocal artist, I respect her voice (and Mandy Moore)! She obviously has the ability to do what she wants with her voice. She simply chooses to sing a certain way, just like Brandy did growing up, to represent her artistry and to please her fans only! My opinion does not negate her artistic craftsmanship nor does KZbinrs who have all the vocal answers! The music industry, vocal artistry and fan pleasing, dictates what an artists does on the stage! Simply put! But I do love his personal opinions of things regardless! 🙋‍♀️💋💋💋
