I went from beer distribution and food service to flatbed. It’s not fun when the weather sucks, but honestly, flatbed is really enjoyable to me. I love that I can stay active securing loads and that the loads vary and it keeps you on your toes! Coming from beer/food, flatbed is fun! I just started with a company that uses Conestoga trailers which are new to me. Been a very enjoyable 3 weeks so far. Love the learning process and acquiring new skills! I’ll be staying with flatbed for a long time! Dry van/reefer is just boring to me now…

I actually made the least amount of money doing flatbed vs. dry van and shipping containers. But that was one company. Spend a whole lot of extra time waiting to get loaded and tarping, that doesn’t pay 💰 off. And tarping sucks!!

100% spot on. Flatbed/ heavy haul driver for 7 years and wouldn’t trade it for any other division of trucking. I personally appreciate the opportunity to stay in shape with the physical work, plus there’s room for growth and more money with the different kinds of open deck trailers you can pull. Flat, step, double drop deck, RGN lowboy etc. Never gets old to me.

Only flatbed experience I have is pulled a 53 foot flatbed, split axle. Hauling blue chep pallets. I really like flatbed. I really don’t like the split axle, doing U turns and backing. Feels so weird. One time it felt like the trailer wanted to tip over. I’m looking to buy a trailer, dry van or flatbed. Dry van I know it, easy work. Flatbed I love the physical/labor part of it. But i don’t know how to strap everything. Especially coils or equipment, don’t know how to tarp. I don’t know where to learn. As an owner op 😐

I’m flatbed and my company pays about 10cpm more for flatbed vs van. Problem is I spend so much time securing that I’m not getting paid for. I get paid to tarp but anything else like strapping/chaining I’m doing for free. I haven’t pulled van or reefer but I know they get less cpm. But also I feel like they could make just as much since they don’t lose so much time securing loads and can keep their wheels turning longer. It currently takes me between 1-3 hours to secure a load depending on what it is.

Done flatbed it don't pay like it use to and they don't barely pay for tarping. And no matter how hard you tighten the load and i have done it tighten down the load until lumber cracks, straps snap, anything. Some entitled driver cuts you off and you have to slam on the brakes that load will shift. Good luck getting to the receiver after that.

Which means I'd have to go to school to get my cdl 1st, 7-8grand for school, try to work 10+ hrs a day & go to school 8hrs a day; & no jobs around here pay enough to be able to afford to live & save the money for school. And I've bn doin my line of work (industrial Maintenance mechanic/welder, fabricator) for 20years, so its NOT just sum b/s or me findin' excuses, sayin its just gonna b too hard. I did find that the local state college has cdl program- 4wks long, & grants still available, but I currently "make too much" so don't qualify. But!!!! Prime, Inc. has made sum changes to hiring area, so I've bn accepted to their program-- FINALLY, gettin my chance!!! Just gotta keep ur head down, don't take NO for an answer & find a way. Even if that means "temporarily" moving out of Florida. But luckily, with Prime, I'm NOT gonna have to do that

If you're doing well in Lawn Care, I wouldn't feel angst in driving these things. I've been doing it for 12 yrs and it isn't as glamorous as sm makes it out to be. The pay isn't that great until you pay your dues, around 5 years of experience or so. A lot of time away from home. Healthy food options are scant & a LOT of time alone. If you do decide to try it, start what this man tells ya. Flatbedding is more interesting. Keeps the weight off ya, the load times aren't as stringent as van trailers ( especially reefer) & skate boards don't struggle on a windy day near much as van trailers. An empty van in high winds is susceptible to rolling over.
