I totally agree with what you said. I graduated with a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering two years ago and has been working in an environmental consultant company in PA. Basically 90% of time is spent on coordination, oversight, inspection, sampling and repetitive report text writing, which I think anyone without a degree can do well after some training. I am looking for opportunities to become a more important and irreplaceable role in this industry. I hope we can discuss about this more.

I agree with you and i think everybody should work the field that they love. Environmental engineering is an amazing field with a lot of in it. It has chemistry, civil engineering computer science, law etc. I was studying at computer engineering and i shifted to environmental engineering. I am so happy this field is much more larger than it seems. It can be combined with a lot of diciplines. It is relatively easy to study, it means more time to spend time environmental engineering field with other diciplines.

Ha mezun olur muydum olurdum orası ayrı ama çok çile çekerdim ve düşük bir ortalamayla mezun olurdum. Graduating environmental engineers should consider an air quality position. Always plenty of jobs (at least in Louisiana and Texas). I work directly with chemical/oil/gas facilities, and their environmental teams are always looking for more air quality staff.

Also, in the air quality field, you will get to do “engineering stuff”. Every Title V air permit application requires a PE stamp. Lots of emission calculations involved.

From a career point of view, it is always best to stick with the conventional engineering degrees like Civil, Electrical, Computer, Mechanical and so on. If you are really into something specific or maybe think you can bring about change using your education on environmental principles and technology, you can go for it. But the thing is that the scope of Environmental Engineering is just too vast. You will be learning everything but not enough. For example, if you are designing and building a waste water treatment plant or water supply facility or maybe even monitoring air and water, the engineers involved would be civil (design and build), mechanical (mechanical components and processes involved) and chemical (quantitative and qualitative analysis). The project leader could be an environmental engineer but the multitude of other engineers involved would be from other more common and specific fields. Sure you would need environmental engineers in environmental assessments, compliance monitoring but you would also need sociologists, hydrologists, economists and so on. What I want to convey is the lack of specific opportunities in this field. This is my opinion but your choice is your own.

That's not really an argument. Any field is vast once you start looking into it. As long as you get good basics in math, physics & computer science in your environmental engineering curriculum you'll be fine.

Seriously, environmental engineering has the opportunity to be a well-rounded, fulfilling sector many different career backgrounds can come together for a common, healthy cause of sustainability and innovation. It'd be peak of human ingenuity and collaboration where there's realistically no biases, cos who doesn't want a greener earth? I agree on career POV though; and it excites yet troubles me how far one could grow, but w/o making positive contributive change to our environment.

@@ashtonroberts9941 Well, why would you need an environmental engineering degree when you have already chosen a specific subject? If you are talking from a carrer point of view, I couldn't tell you as it depends on the place you reside in or wish to work in. This may sound cliche but you could move ahead in your carrer and education in any field irrespective of the employability if your interest or determination guides you. If you want to move ahead with specializing in hydrology, a degree in Hydroinformatics is a good choice. I think a degree in geology as you mentioned would also be a good choice. I see a lot of prospects there. But, if you have some specific carrer objective, as you outlined with your interest in environmental engineering, get a degree based on that.

I have a bachelor degree in Sustainable Development and have experience working in mining as an environmental technician doing environmental management and monitoring activities. I Then join a company specialised in distributing solar (household and mini grid system). I involved in drafting the company's environment impact plan and policy and even conducted an e-waste management research. I currently work in designing a number of WaSH projects and infrastructure. I have received news from a university that I'm qualified for a masters in environmental systems engineering and will start next year. Upon completion of my studies, i will specifically work in monitoring tailings and waste management in mining companies which requires my expertise after observing a lot of re advertisement of environmental engineering positions. My point here is, nothing negative in pursuing an environmental engineering career (it depends on one country to another). Also, if you strategically position yourself for this and as long as it's your passion. Go for it! Salary is not an issue. Those KZbin advice are now obsolete if one think this field does not pay much. Back then sustainability was not an important topic. Today the career growth rate in this field is projected to be 4% in the near years to come. While I'm originated from a resource rich coutry in Papua New guinea. We have more mining activities in the country and the need to ensure compliance to environmental requirements per the exploration lease and legislation inplace makes the labour demand very high. Not long every orgnisation will go green, and this means environmental engineering speciality will be needed more than ever!

That's a good topic for me to cover next. Personally, I went through the same route with my BS in Chemistry. The hardest part is probably just getting accepted into a Masters program. I had a 3.4 GPA, some research projects with a PhD student, work experience, and extra curricular activities,. My grad school essay and GRE score was horrible though. What really helped me was the letter of recommendations. I had powerful professors and the Dean of engineering write me one, so I would recommend you have really good letters to balance and offset any of your other pieces of the application.

You'll need to ensure you have courses from Calc I to III and EDE/ODE, physics, chemistry, statsics, dynamics, rigid bodies, and fluid mechanics. You'll also need some intro to EnvE or WRE. You'll spend more time making up the curriculum if not.

New environmental engineer here. This job is TOUGH. People wouldn’t last a day in our shoes. But, it’s a combination of field world and office work. This field is for tough people! Tough and smart. We do calculations, design, compliance, CAD, chemistry, and electrical. It’s not always about Sanitary Sewer 😂. Love this job

Hey Randy, glad I found your channel and message! I have to believe that North American society and governments (I'm from Canada) will hit a wall where we can't maintain non-action on the climate. I do see a bright future in environmental engineering, compliance, and data management, but I'm seeing a wide time range between 2020 and 2030 for that. I run a software business in cannabis compliance, and anything compliance related that ties into the issues we millennials will experience is up my alley.

As a junior environmental engineer, you are sent to the field to collect sample under all weather conditions; even during winter with sub-zero temperature. You have to deal with nasty substances (liquid, soil, and air). You have to be a good driver, driving a pickup truck in construction zone and at river edge. It is nothing like what you learned in classroom. Many couldn't take it and changed career.

A lot of these factors depend on where you live. For example, in most states in America, biomedical engineers make more than env. engineers. However where I live, env. engineers get paid way more than them.

At the moment, I am applying for an environmental entry-level jobs, but due to the broad scope of the job it makes me harder to get in. Nevertheless, the program offers higher responsibility for the environment in general with the smart application of science and engineering respectively. I am appealing here in the university where I graduated my degree to have a major of specification. This is to resolve the super ultra broad knowledge we need to acquire in order to compete with other engineering graduate. Yes, I would suggest that you should pursue the MS for Envi Eng'g because it is more specific and you'll be equipped robustly for it. You are also correct that this job is quite deprived than chemical engineers but I can assure you that this would take you farther enough to be financially competitive.

I'm currently a site civil engineer, is it possible that I can shift career to Environmental Engineer even without taking some of the specific classes? I guess we only had the basics, but are there any difference on them? Because based on my browsing, environmental engineering is a branch of civil engineering, yet there are specific courses offered in the capital, I'm from a region in the Philippines and there are no specific environmental engrg courses offered. I graduated and passed the licensure exam in CE and I feel stock with my choice of career, I'm more interested to science and stuff, and I believe Environmental Engineering would be a good change, since it's awesome that you can do research and stuff on the environment, and very purposeful I believe.

At my university, Env Eng was a subcategory of Civil Engineering so the classes were very similar and most of my classmates were Civil engineers. I don't know how it works in other countries but here in the US; Env Eng are pretty flexible. I mentioned the job description is broad where some companies expect their Env Eng to construct and design processes while I've seen some others work with scientists and biologists taking water samples. It all depends on the company you're applying for and what they're doing rather than the title itself. If you're interested in a more science related change, you might just need some exposure to labs to gain experience. I'd look for some lab internships/volunteering on the side while you continue your Civil Engineering job

It depends on what your responsibilities are. I work towards compliance and NOT in design or research. You only need to do well in Chemistry for school; you don't need to be an expert chemist if you are going to be an environmental engineer.

My over 300+ job applications also included jobs that weren't related to environmental engineering. I had a BS in Chemistry so I applied to lab jobs as well. You are correct; I only applied in California.

Yes, you can get a Masters in any subject even if it wasn't your Bachelors. Example, I got a BS in Chemistry and a Masters in Env Eng. Just be weary of the costs of getting a Masters Degree. It wouldn't make sense to pay for the degree if you won't ever use it.

I've never taken a chemical engineering course during my time at university, so I can't say how helpful it will be. I would think the more you take, the more well-rounded you'd be in what's going in with that field. Just be aware of how much longer it would take to graduate and the costs to taking the classes. If I were in your shoes, I would take both courses to fulfill my curiosity and if you don't like it moving forward, at least you tried.

I wanted your opinion: in undergrad I was told to do Civil and then specialize as a graduate student but i know from the jump that I wanted to do environmental engineering so I purposely avoided classes like construction engr., geotech, or other classes not realed to water treatment. In grad school, I took courses geared towards water chemistry and water treatment to specialize in EnvE and to get my M.Eng in EnvE and not Civil. Was it a smart move to go the direct route or should I have done civil in case I wanted to leave environmental, I could go to WRE or environmental transportation?

Honestly, I did the same. I got my Bachelors in Chemistry, so I avoided taking construction/engineering courses during my Masters. I took mostly water chemistry and water treatment courses to graduate. It depends on where you will get hired and if your company requires you to know some of those courses. Me avoiding Autocad and other computer courses did limit my knowledge/flexibility. I could have gone into Civil despite my Env Eng degree because I would have the skills they needed.

Agreed. But I don't like that approach because now you're limited to only that specific subject for the rest of your career, at the fault of the employer who wants you to master that specific field.

Your parents probably have their doubts because they just want the best for you and your job search. Depending on your location, you should research the job market for atmospheric science. In the end, it is ultimately your choice and life to decide where you want to work.

I don't have the right answer to that. I'm just going to speculate that water and waste might be the next big issue because of the current situation. I believe water will always be an issue because you hear all over the news that XX billions of people don't have access to clean drinking water. And I believe waste will become a future issue because of the current lockdowns. With more people staying at home and medical testings, all that waste has to go somewhere. Those were just my opinions, so do be careful in what field you choose.

While water and wastewater are always going to be important, storm and surface water quality is a major concern for many developed countries, especially in the United States as we have to comply with our overlord's (the Department of Ecology) National Pollutant and Discharge Elimination System permit in order to discharge untreated storm runoff into state waters. Surface water quality in the US is a major issue as Salmonid populations continue to decline and our oceans become more acidic. I am personally pursuing my Masters in Environmental Engineering after spending 3 years as a construction worker in Storm and Surface Water seeing just how important it is.

The job opportunities will vary greatly depending on your location. Some countries and states are more serious about the environment than others. I am not an employer and do not hire anyone, so I cannot say whether or not you will find a job. I do not know the job market of any other country besides the US. You will have to do research on that yourself. Those are some pretty different fields. Just do what you love most because in the end, you'll be stuck with that

I am a RPN trying to go back to school to get my RN but I am highly considering getting into environmental engineering! I went into nursing because of my personality, I am an extrovert, and many of the things you mentioned in this video pertains to nursing! I do not really like nursing i really want to get into water and air quality!

I don't think I could have ever been a nurse 😆. You guys have my highest respect. My position is towards compliance, so I don't work in the lab, visualize data, use AutoCAD, or do permitting. My role requires lots of email responses, paperwork, and meeting with contractors/inspectors to make sure my facility runs smoothly. If you're interested in designing systems or water treatment plants, you'll be leaning towards the Civil Engineering side of Environmental engineering. If you're leaning towards air quality permitting, you'll need some background in chemistry and good customer service experience.

I think California has more job opportunity for environmental engineers than most other states. That being said though, the current job market for them is still pretty low, but I'm optimistic that in the future, given our unsustainable trajectory, that it will be higher in demand.

It's not expected for you to be a professional chemist during the job, so I don't think so. Once you've passed all your classes, it should be OK. But that all depends on your employer and what they expect you to do on the job

No one knows everything when they first start. You don't have to be smart, just eager and willing to learn from your mistakes. Yes, you can develop the skills as you go throughout your job. Trust me, I had no idea what I was doing when I started. You will get better and adapt as you go throughout the workday and as you get thrown into spontaneous events.

I think since environment engineering lewnr many sort of engineering (civil, mechanical, chemical ngineering, chemistry) i think it would be better taking specific master to give flexibity in career. Hi Ramkumar, I like your ambition and passion. Environmental engineering seems like the perfect route since you want to be creating green technology. You ultimately want to work in a research project during college, that way you can get exposed to what the process is like. No matter what field you go to (chemical, environmental, biological, etc...), getting into a research project with a professor or a graduate student should help you with your goals.

I have more respect for people who are willing to learn despite their age compared to people who feel obligated to go to college because it is considered the norm. I commend you if you are pursuing this route. You are not delusional, but you will have many prerequisite classes to go through. If you feel that school isn't right for you, you don't have to have a college degree or environmental engineer title to make a difference in this world.

There are other methods of income besides going to an expensive college and getting a degree that might not even be necessary or used. Trade school or starting an online business are a couple of options. If you are solely into env engineering because you want to work doing environmental reclamation, you might start out from the bottom working as a technician if you don't any experience.
