After watching your videos for about a year now it is starting to sink in... I really thought I could organize everything I had and I did have it organized. But then I realized I don't need half or 75% all that stuff... I am in the process of getting rid of what I am NOT using. Thank you for your inspiration. I myself AM an organizer! I think I did a good job but have really learned that I can let go of things I am NOT using any longer and a much happier! Thank you and Happy New Year!

Lorie, this is your best video yet, simple, logical and straightforward, and very practical. And you look so nice and happy that I believe your systems are working for you! (Which is the very best selling point!) I think you'd make a good life coach, if you ever want to expand beyond clutter.

You hit the nail on the head, for me, 5 times!!. I am glad I came across your channel! All my kids moved out and with 2 extra rooms it became a mess! I have watched videos and read books but nothing seems to register. You know what I mean? I guess I have gotten lazy, I don't know but definitely subscribing and praying I channel that inner organizer in me! My office at work is so organized. I just cant seem to do the same at home!!

I have just spent a year over hauling our house - how we store things, where we store things and getting rid of things that no longer have a reason for being here - and I feel lighter in myself because of it. This is invaluable advice - I could have done with finding you a year ago - but better late than never eh? Heather

My dx for my full 1750 sq foot house is living with 2 daughters and a spouse for a long time and becoming an empty nester including the spouse flocking away almost 5 years ago, and continuing filling it up as a way to cope with the new situation. Now I realize that I don't need the space, nor the stuff anymore and I need to adjust to single living. Better late then never. I want to downsize and save on housing/up keeping cost. The more space, the more cost in electricity etc. My goal is a small space of 600 sq foot maximum or smaller if possible with solar energy system. This also needs to happen for my planned retirement in 12 years, which sounds like far away but is actually round the corner when talking about financial planning. This is all common sense, but the trick is to make it happen. First the housing market here is down and I don't have great equity on the house and need to do some repairs on top. Then the process of getting rid of stuff, did a round the house tour putting stuff in the lv for a yard sale, but its not near half the stuff I own and I need to get rid of more then half of it. It's a hard process to go through emotionally and time wise. Third big problem is how to do it when you I'm a single women alone with no family or friends close by; there are so many tasks that I'm not physically able to do. I find myself in a very difficult and stressful situation, but I want and need to do something about it. Any advice? Would love to hear from you, any expert or anyone that has gone through a similar experience. I'm sure I'm not alone. Thanks in advance for any reply B-)

Natalie Drapeau Hi Natalie- sounds like great big changes going on all around you. Good for you for taking control of the situation. Have you thought about bringing someone in to help you with the sale- like an estate sale planner? That may help you move through more stuff more quickly.

Natalie Drapeau No, you certainly are not alone. I have retired twice, once from my full-time job, and now from the part-time one I transitioned into, because I ca no longer do it physically. At this point, one feels trapped in one's things because one doesn't have the strength to move them, so you are quite right in preparing for it many years ahead of time. I hired a very intelligent & understanding housekeeper who was willing to help me 3 hrs/week to work on the job of decluttering and reorganizing. Each week we do one project which I have to define beforehand, such as one closet, the linen cupboard, the laundry room, etc. I have a week to think about it and make plans where to dispose of the extras. Books and electronics need the most homework because few charities take them and municipal recycling does not usually want them either, so it takes going on line and making some phone calls. Some projects are best done in stages, like first getting rid of what doesn't fit in the current space, and then, maybe even a year or two later paring it down to what will fit in the space you are planning to have. If you are going to sell your house, it helps to envision how you want it to look when potential buyers go through it. When your children move into their own homes, have them take over things they would like to have, and make it clear that they cannot use their childhood home to store their old things, hard as that may be for them to conceive. A very pleasant way to rehome things you like but no longer need is to help organizations who resettle refugees and immigrants set up the new homes for arriving families. This type of work is done by International Institutes in some urban areas, or by Catholic Charities and other voluntary organizations. A call to your United Way may help you identify who is resettling immigrants. People transitioning into independent living from institutions for the homeless also need household goods and furniture, as do those moving into supervised, but independent apartments for the mentally ill, or housing for veterans recovering from injuries including PTSD. You can always donate your stuff, but in these programs you can sometimes volunteer to help set folks up - there is nothing more fun, I think, than seeing your old things make a pretty new home for someone who has nothing! It's almost on a par with rescuing an injured mangy dog which turns into an incredible well-groomed smart service dog. . . .

How did you manage to take pictures of almost every area of my house! (I'd add "LOL" but I guess it really isn't funny.) I've got every, single thing you're talking about, ON TOP OF something I was *about* to do! I have this tiny, 8x10 room I was planning to turn into an all-purpose room! (Utility room plus a place to keep things my daughter can't keep in her room, like her vanity, extra shoes, etc.)

Too much stuff. I cannot stand stuff on the floor, so I have controlled clutter, using 13 gallon RubberMaids, covered with pretty covers. Number the boxes and use an index box to tell the contents and location. It is a pleasure to listen to you..

I've noticed you often promote Goodwill in your videos; why is this? There are many other organizations that will use those donations in a way that is more beneficial to your community. Thank you!

+Caroline Flynn Hi Caroline! I am the spokesperson for Goodwill Industries International. I have toured many of the local facilities and programs around the country. I whole heartedly believe in their mission "Goodwill works to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening communities, eliminating barriers to opportunity, and helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work." Thank you for watching and for commenting.

You may choose the Salvation Army instead of Goodwill. Check it out but I believe Goodwill is some guy who gives a % to charity. I believe that’s what I heard. Do your homework
