The air quality can be an issue but I also think letting people know the valley is VERY high in allergens!!! We are often off the charts with pollen!! If you have never had allergies, you will at some point if you move here!!! 🤧

I am a native Oregonian and have lived in Springfield for about 25 years and have found it difficult to find friends. I have met some over time but often people already have friend groups here and really don't add a lot of new people. I also think that if I would have chosen to have kids there would have been more opportunities but not worth it for me. There are likely lots of volunteer opportunities out there but I really just wasn't aware enough to seek them out. I am from a very small town in Oregon and really didn't know to look. 😊

I would agree that both Eugene and Springfield are places where you have to push yourself to make friends, as opposed to the community just sort of inviting it.

Thank you for your videos! My husband and I loved visiting Eugene, last month! We’ve lived in northern and metro areas of Colorado for 20 years and while we love it here, Eugene and further west was unbelievably beautiful. We’re considering moving, so all your videos (and other’s comments) are very helpful 😊

Hello Hannah, What a fantastic video series you do, I greatly appreciate them! I like the part about how people aren’t overly friendly, that made me chuckle, that definitely does not scare us as we’re from New England and we also have that reputation. We’ve lived in Santa Cruz CA. and Sequim WA. and currently Homeowners in southern Maine for the last three years, but we deeply miss the west for a number of reasons. My partner just drove through Eugene as he is out that way to go work at a flyfishing lodge in Alaska in a few days, he took a few extra days to check out some cities we thought we might like, in OR. so good fly fishing rivers are a major factor, no Shortage there, which makes my partner very happy, he seemed very stoked on Eugene which is interesting because he’s not easily stoked on much 😆 I had mentioned the homelessness and the housing shortage which seems to be literally everywhere across this country but Eugene seems to tick off all the boxes for us. The only thing I’m concerned about is I do suffer from allergies, It seems like I suffer wherever I go though so I’m just wondering is it really any different from anywhere else I’ve lived? For me it was particularly bad in coastal CA. U of O health and allergy page has some great tips on how to deal with allergy season there. I also noticed there’s an Amtrak there as well which is pretty great for shooting up to Portland 👍🏼 anyway just wanna let you know I appreciate your videos and if and when we make the move I’ll probably be reaching out to you but it won’t be until spring of 2025 most likely. Any thoughts on cottage Grove or Oak Ridge? Thank you for your time!

Thank you for watching and sharing all of that! I have to be honest and if you already have issues with allergies, I think you may have a hard time here. I have never been one to have a problem with it, so other that statistically speaking, I can't really say. That's great to hear about the UO page though! Between Cottage Grove and Oakridge, my personal preference would be Cottage Grove. My biggest reason being the forest fires. Oakridge gets hit the hardest every year as it is closer to the forests in the east. Cottage Grove is also larger and has more resources, so depends on how much you like that small town feel. I can see Oakridge's appeal from a fly-fisher though. I would also say that Oakridge is one of the most affordable markets in Lane County.

when i first came to OR w/my hubby - visiting Crater Lake - and we drove over the boarder on Route 199 - and on the Oregon side someone had spray painted "WELCOME TO OREGON! NOW GO HOME!" We laughed so hard we realized Oregon was probably the place for us. Ten years later we moved here. Best move we ever made. But we understand the brief - Welcome to Oregon - now go home ;) >wink-wink-nudge-nudge

I have lived in the Eugene vicinity for upwards of 30 years. In the last ten years it has gone very downhill very quickly. The homeless do cause a lot of crime. Then it is not nearly as safe and non violent as people try to portray it . Eugene is a dirty place and they seem to be proud of their filth

We just toured the Eugene area looking for a new home. When we made a loop through Springfield we saw so many Trump signs and other hate propaganda. If we do ever purchase there, we're not going to be anywhere near the 'Trump Trash' neighborhood.

I have experienced hate crime on both sides. My family met in AZ at Rocky Horror. Most my uncles/aunts were gay. I moved to Eugene/Springfield/Cottage Grove area and I have been judged by all sides. So, I experienced a NDE in 2018 at the hospital, and I witnessed what felt like Heaven, He'll and the forgiving man of light I know as Jesus Christ. Never believed before this experience. Well, I have been to loose parties in Eugene where they claim ALL are welcome, parties I used to attend for about 6 years! But as time went on, the group became very cultish in nature. I have seen many people, including myself, go here and debate the existence of God or Christ. You could talk about ANY religion there... except Christianity. I have seen many people be kicked out if events for asking questions about why this group's main focus was heresy and debauchery. For nearly a decade I watched people in these venues slowly lose their own personality, their own minds, and become a group collective... pushing away anything that could threaten how they justify their actions of indoctrination young vulnerable women into this costumesque masquerade lifestyle. Meanwhile... I have lived in Springfield and Creswell, the surrounding cities. Springfield has the largest strip clubs per capita, and Creswell has the most churches per cap. So after my NDE I was still dying my hair funny colors, blue streaks in particular! I was actually nearly fired from a small town job once they realized I had one blue streak under my hair. People could have pink, dusty rose, burgundy purple... but I had to hide my blue. If the streak showed I was pulled into the office to redo my bun. I have met many amazing people, so loving and open, claiming to be christian... but the minute I tell them that my uncle was a tortured gay christian, or my parents met at Rocky, or that I wasn't raised Christian, or i used to hang out with new age witches... or they find out I have a black great great grandma... all of a sudden they hear "equally yoked" and want nothing to do with me or my Godless parents. People who think that because I had a blue streak that I voted for Biden 🤣 telling me to go home and stop polluting their original religious ways that conquered this entire state.... u know, the laws that made it legal to hang blacks until nearly 1910. Don't even go to Coburg if you aren't noticeably wealthy and white. This is why many if the "generational Oregonians" who have been here since the start are moving to Idaho for religious/political reasons. Their vote doesn't get represented with all of the lgbtq community here... which can be just as unwelcoming due to fear... both groups are staking their territory and not wanting any outsiders in. And then... I have met many people who are in between like me, amazingly loving people who understand both perspectives... these who know God's love enough to KNOW its not our place to judge others who are struggling with discovering who they are, rather instead support them in their struggle.... to understand that "the devil" also sits openly within the church system itself... that God's love is within, and expressed through others without lust or judgement. But again... those people are hard to find. But they are here. I would say the historical mining/logging town of Cottage Grove is probably the best place to find the existence if a happy medium. No time for extremes there cuz they gotta make a mountain town of 10K work. Sadly... too many rich outsiders are buying up the land there cuz its prime location. So getting to LIVE there is not easy anymore.

As a "native" to Oregon, when I return to visit family and friends, I'm reminded why my parents moved from Eugene AFTER they married. It's full of weirdos and has been since the 1960's (students attempted to burn down the ROTC building on the UO campus), anti-republican's (low tolerance if you have a differing opinion), snooty, high cost of living, and don't forget clouds and rain 9 months out of the year. Lacking in pharmacies, and the governors have been, and continue to be, lousy. Plus' - no sales tax (they get you in other ways), refund on bottles (but you have to pay a deposit first), lots of outdoor activities, everything is green because it rains all of the time, close to the coast, and there are friendly people despite the prejudice in belief systems. That's my opinion and my experience.

Wow Hannah, I had no idea that childcare is such a rare resource there. Scarcity sometimes breeds opportunity, so if someone was seeking to open a childcare facility or provide childcare privately, maybe Eugene is perfect? By the way, I have a possible topic for you. Rumor has it that Eugene has a robust and thriving recovery community. Would you know anything about that?

Absolutely, I would love for more people to come and start preschools or in home childcare here. That is a great point. I am not super familiar with the recovery community, but I do know a newish Peer Recovery Center opened recently.

I live in Eugene and have been active in recovery for ten years. There are definitely a lot of different meetings at various locations to choose from, and I've met many people in them that have become close friends. I don't personally have any other place to compare it to with regards to the quality of the recovery community, but I do often hear folks from out of town comment in meetings that they find it good for recovery.

They burned fields in the 60's. I grew up in Eugene as well. Didn't have fire season until the climate crazy's started getting involved. I never saw so many homeless at Costco in my life. Ferry Street Bridge is another area to stay away from. Santa Clara area is a trouble spot for High School Students attending North Eugene High School. Gimple Hill area is where we lived, nice farms and quiet. Fern Ridge Lake has some good housing, my youngest sister lives at Fern Ridge Estates. Homeless are spreading out to forest areas, be aware. You can no longer pump your own gas in Oregon, it's a shame. Springfield is the pits, literally. The area near Winston Churchill High School (my school) is another area to stay away from.

I'm surprised about your views on the city. I'm wondering if living up Gimpl hill and "coming in to town" has left you with only a small snapshot of the city. Climate crazies? You mean people concerned about the environment and are trying to point out climate change? The climate is changing and it has nothing to do with certain people's views. Also, you can pump your own gas and have been able to for awhile now. I'm surprised you're not aware of that. Homeless at costco? I almost never see homeless there. In fact most of the coburg rd/ Gilliam area i rarely see a homeless person. This is coming from someone who's grown up here, lives in the coburg rd area and works around Hwy99. Eugene and Springfield has its issues and some parts have gotten worse over the years bur I've see areas improve. I don't think your view of the city is really representative or reality.

having grown up in Baltimore, the lack of diversity was off putting to me when i moved here 10 years ago. thankfully, in the past 3-4 years i have noticed a marked uptick in diversity. Oregon is still shedding the history of its formation as the state that barred people of colour to settle here upon pain of being whipped once for every six months they stayed. (from 1844 to the final repeal in 1926)

Pollen problems spring and summer. Extreme heat in summer. Near 100F for at least two weeks. It’s expensive as far as cost of living. There is a big native people’s community (this is a positive) here not mentioned here. Healthcare not as prevalent as in Portland city. Lack of parking in some areas of living. Come stay for a while at an Air BNb maybe and check it out. :)

I'm in Winston so we have to come to Eugene for anything worse than a splinter. We do not have an animal hospital, GI specialists, or a level one trauma center in Roseburg, the "city" next to us. I'm from Reno so this shocked me when I moved here. Neighbors are fine but did have to be put one in their place. Had one tell me, "I had better be a republican" since I moved to Winston and we had a little lesson on what freedom actually means.

You forgot the most important reason: Eugene is due for a major subduction zone earthquake, and most buildings and infrastructure don't meet code to withstand it.

@@MovingtoEugeneOregon after living in the town for 6 years, the fact that you have a readily available minimum wage workforce keeps wages down. That same workforce is willing to pay a little bit more for rent, and all of the retired people you end up with a mix match of wages versus rent that is much higher than most other places in the state. The City of Eugene does not like to admit when there is issues because God forbid they drive any of the college students away, this behavior created a lot of the gang problems they have now when they could have nipped it in the bud back in the mid-90s. Do you have an electric board that is publicly owned yet acts like a massive corporation, City board members that jump on any bandwagon that is being preached across the Nation such as natural gas being bad, and have created a lot of their own problems. Eugene is the biggest little city I've ever scene and I was in the Army for 7 years so I got to see other countries as well as our own cities in other states. They're also the most capitalistic liberal town which is a joke because everything that made it cute has now been taken over by capitalists. Even the pot shop owners who used to probably be the same people in the 90s standing around saying kind buds kind of buds, they're trying to get legislation passed to not allow new pot shops to open within a thousand feet of existing ones. It didn't take long for them to change as well. I know that politics and policies across the Nation are not going well for cities, they are going well for people who are standing to make money, that said Eugene seems to have always been ahead of that game. The UVO doesn't do a very good job of policing its students, and in comparison of the U of O in Eugene versus OSU in Corvallis Corvallis and OSU not only seem to thrive better together, OSU produces a lot better end result students in athletes than the UFO does.

You sound like a person who's lived in Eugene for most of their lives. Theft of opportunity are still theft and are never the victim's fault. Property crime is so baked into the local culture that victims see it as their fault. It shouldnt be that way. And its not that way in more sane parts of the country.
