Fun story on how i got my hands on one of these. I was cleaning out my great grandma's closet. when i found her old purse, so then i reached beside of it and grabbed this big bag that was some what heavy. I had no idea what to expect until i checked the first pocket and found a camera lense. I began to get really excited because i've just recentley gotten into photography. So i unzip the next pocket. Tell myself that if it really is a camera that i need to stay calm and try not to cry. However i did because it was better then i had hoped. It even came with a vintage necklace to attach to the sides so that it wont drop. & multiple different lenses. I came across this video wanting to know more about my great grandmothers old camera . So, thank you for bringing me more joy knowing someone else thinks this camera is great too.

The Canon A-1 was my first interchangeable lens camera. This brought me into the Canon family, I still shoot Canon with digital cameras. Recently I took a "analog" (film) photography class at the local community college. The school provides inexpensive film cameras to the students since most won't have a film camera. I was proud to have such a fine camera for the class.

Marlen Pula probably the easiest double exposure feature on any film camera haha. I forgot to mention that. It's really convenient of how easy it is, opposed to other cameras where you might have to rewind the film.

My dad went to a Goodwill Warehouse and found this camera still in its bag in a bin amongst random junk. My dad said he saw it and thought of me. It has a few different lenses in it and still had the lense cleaner, old film and a beautiful floral and velvet strap. The camera is in really good condition and he probably got it all for less than $5. I'm surprised nobody opened to bag to see what was in it... Or they did and didn't care. I'm so excited to use it!

I bought a Canon A1 in 1982 fantastic piece of engineering complete with a Canon 70/210 lens and Canon 35/70 standard lens plus long nose case,This Canon has only shot 2 films and now lies in their original Canon boxes. still works and is in mint as new condition. On occasions I do take it out of the box just to admire what a amazing looking camera it is probably the best ever camera ever built

I just replaced mine. I had an AE1 for my first good camera in about 1977, but the A1 came out and I wanted one but couldn't afford it. I finally got one and sadly made the mistake of selling when I bought a new F1HP. I am now happy I got another one and it is so cherry, it looks like it's only a year old. Now I have to buy back all the FD and FL lenses I had when I had my F1.....and I had all the greats even a Holy Grail 85 f1.2.

Yep another piece of my Canon arsenal back in the late 70s. While the AE1P was my first major Canon purchase while in HS, however, I really lusted after the A1 and that black body (black body cameras back then screamed PRO PHOTOG!). I saved all of my pennies and bought the A1 the following year just before College. Indeed the A1 was a legendary rig, soon to be replaced by the T-90 (another rockin camera) in 1985.

Hard to argue with you, I had use of one for about 6 weeks back in 1979 or 1980, too long ago to remember that detail. I did not want to like it (as it was my closest friend and rival camera) but I have to say, it really turned in some excellent photographs. Also, I enjoyed using it.

the most important thing you have ti know about the canon A-1 and AE-1 is that you need to oil them, after some time they start to squeek and then the machanism is getting damaged and the shutter speed becomes slower, i´v had 3 different A-1, it´s so common to see them in that bad shape and people dont know about it

I just came across this video about the FOUR reasons to buy a Canon A-1. Th e reason why it's four reasons is because the first reason, the claim that the A-1 was the "First multi-mode" camera is incorrect. The Minolta XD-11 beat it to market by a year. I love film cameras and I love the content that you and others produce. Keep up the good work!!!

I used to have an AE-1 and was very happy with it for a while. Loved the big and very bright and easy readable viewfinder and that it wasn't too heavy to carry around with. However there were a few things that started to annoy me after a while and made me sell it again. For example, the special 6v battery that is hard to get and very expensive and usually was always depleted when i wanted to use it. And also the special lens mount that was incompatible with most of my K-mount and M42 lense. And since i was using my Pentax KX and Zenit cameras more and more, i decided to rather sell the Canon AE-1 again and make room and let someone else use the camera instead of letting it collect dust. All of my other cameras either work 100% fully mechanical or require standard LR44 button cell batteries that are easy to obtain. I guess the A-1 uses the same strange 6 Volt battery as the AE-1, right? I saw the battery compartment on the front of the A-1 is just like the one on the AE-1.

If you're lucky and don't take pictures too often it can last for 2 years. However with aging electronics inside the camera, that cannot always be guaranteed. After all these cameras are nearly all 30-40 years old now. This is why i moved away from cameras with too much electronics inside and prefer the ones that are mainly mechanical and only need battery power for the lightmeter, not for the shutter. However I still have 2 cameras like that (a Pentax SuperA and a Yashica FX) and i use them both in Manual mode only. Was never really a fan of program automatic modes.

Whats hilarious is I find the latest tech to be the best, even if i have to have a stock of cr2 batteries on me. Canon Rebel t2 35mm film, extreme control, 3fps, auto roll, EF mount. Sure it doesn't attract many people but it gets the job done extremely well without looking like a hipster. I understand preference.

Had 2, but and both got that shutter squeak. Could fix it, but it returned after app. 1 year. In the meantime, one A1 went to scrap and I replaced it with a F1. It's technically the better camera (designed for professionals), due to the different shutter system not vulnerable to shutter squeak and you can buy it unused from collectors (like I did) for reasonable prices. Lens bayonet also FD - like the A1...

Yes and no. They don't work without juice, but the X-700, if you have one with good capacitors, is reliable. I have bought a bunch over the months and only the capacitor failure is a thing. Happens to the 24xxxxx - 27xxxxx series. X-700's were made between 1981-1999, so they are available very cheap / worldwide. A-1's less so.

@Gabez82
@Gabez82 5 жыл бұрын
Ranelle King If you haven’t done so already, the A1 is more full featured in terms of shooting modes. It has Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual of course. The AE-1P is Shutter Priority, Manual and of course Program mode which is a more ‘Auto mode’, in which the camera’s computer decides on which aperture and shutter to set depending on lightning. That sorta summarized the two in a few sentences. I’d lean towards the A1 if possible, but the AE-1P is an excellent camera nonetheless.

I don't think the itch ever truly goes away. I should have my 4K by the end of the week, and then either the RB or RZ 67...or maybe a Pentax. There are so many different cameras that do different jobs and the A1 is a superb consumer camera. But I'll bet my next months salary you'll want a pro camera by this time next year, resist the temptation to step in too early though as they show up every little mistake as it's not just the good stuff you see in more detail. It isn't so much G.A.S. with film cameras like it is with digital because so many different cameras offer so many different looks. It's impossible to compare a M7 to a 503cw as their images are totally different, especially with well chosen film and I don't just mean the shape of the photographs. You're still storming along though and putting out great work and you are right to choose a camera you love so you can learn it inside and out. That knowledge will then enable you to focus on your craft, which is already ahead of your experience. As usual a brilliant and well presented video even though you still have your cold, I hope you feel better soon.

When you decide you want a 120 film camera, which is what most pros used in film days, take your time choosing. I have a Bronica ETRSi which is 645 which means the negative is 6cm x 4.5cm, but in reality they are a little smaller than that but still almost 3 times the size of a 35mm negative. I never print bigger than A4 so far, so this is fine for me, but I would love to get into larger prints. The 645 size means the negative is the same size as digital medium format's sensor and they say to get a digital camera the same quality as a120 film camera it would have to be 200-400mp and even scanned in its up to 80mp! This is a great camera to start on as the 67 is 6x7cm, which is massive, and can be very difficult to master. They can go up to 6x9cm, or even bigger, these bigger ones are great, but not great to start off with. I personally don't like the square 6x6, so that's Hasselblads out of the way for me, but my taste might change in the future. The main thing is to get a system you can grow in. Many MF cameras are system cameras where all the parts are interchangeable, but then there are some where even the lens is fixed. With those are 'system' it means you can change the lens, viewer, viewer glass, and most importantly the back meaning you can be shooting two different rolls of film interchangeably just by changing the back. They are brilliant to shoot with but not cheap, with a 645 you get 15 images to a roll of 120 and a 67 about 10. It's a very complex part of photography and for me the Bronica was the closest to offering everything, but I'd leave it for now and I just thought I'd give you a brief summary.

The New F1 works Shutter Priority with the Motordrive. But the Olympus OM-2n has TTL in meter as well as TTL flash.
@kindjalkazad
@kindjalkazad 6 жыл бұрын
I know the F1 can have the shutter priority, but since you need the motor drive, it's not a built in feature, but more like an add-on. What I really never liked about the OM-2n is the handling :/ it's absolutely not because its a bad camera, its only because it never felt good in my hand, and never liked the viewfinder :/
@angelisone
@angelisone 6 жыл бұрын
The Canon A-1 and AE-1 are amateur & beginner cameras that have plastic bodies. While the Canon New F-1 is a pro camera that came after the Olympus OM-2n, also a pro camera. The New F1 without the AE Finder & without the Motordrive is a manual camera with Aperture & Shutter Display in the viewfinder. If you are a pro and wanted a light, small camera & shoot lot of flashes, then the Olympus OM-2n shines over Canon New F1 and Nikon F3. Yoshihisa Maitani/ATG (Olympus) agrees with royalty on TTL to Canon and Nikon. If you need the world's best camera light meter, the Olympus OM-4 would be one of the choices beside the OM-3. If you want a mini Hasselblad then it will be ATG's Rolleiflex 3003. Even the pros and collectors are lost on this model. And the best flashes at that time were the Olympus and Metz 60CT-4.

The K1000 is completely manual. The metering may or may not work (I i use 'light meter' app) but its a completely mechanical camera, which means that in all probability it will still work in 40 years time whereas the A1 and AE1 will have corroded electronics and will just be a pretty paperweight. I have an A1 however and LOVE IT!. I went to the official UK launch back in 1979 the press were amazed by the advanced electronics. Aperture priority auto, Shutter Priority, auto with non FD lenses or microscope etc, full manual with metering. it cost £499 then almost £2500 in todays money.

Which lens is better for the Canon A1? 50 mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4? :)
@davehyper7835
@davehyper7835 6 жыл бұрын
That really depends on if you want that extra stop of light.... if you are going to shot in lower light maybe consider the 1.4 bare in mind that the 1.4 will weigh a lot more than the 1.8 personally i love the 1.8 but i generally shot at f4 -f8 so wide apertures are not required. the 1.8 is cheaper just as sharp and lighter than the 1.4 good luck!

KingJvpes are you primarily a Minolta and Canon shooter or do you use others? I have a X-700, XD11, and XD5 from Minolta. All of them are wonderful cameras. I recently picked up a Canon AE-1 and a Leica R7.

Jared Tennant you got it! Canton and Minolta is where I'm at, never tried any other cameras but I definitely look forward to doing so. And that's great! How do you feel about the XD-11?
@jaredmtennant
@jaredmtennant 7 жыл бұрын
***** From a technical standpoint, the XD11 is the better camera when compared to the X-700 if you're looking for an all metal body, shutter priority, and an shutter speed preview window in the viewfinder - other than that, the cameras are entirely identical with the exception of a metal shutter on the XD11. Even though the X-700 is a later model, it was a redesign of the XD11 technically. Leica co-engineered the XD11 as well with Minolta, and their version turned out to be the Leica R3. However I use X-700 more because I wanna keep the others' metal body lookin sharp though lol...it's worth owning both if you can find a nice one for a good price or a Minolta fan!

King, I bought it trough a local buyers site from a private person. I've learned to buy in bulk, so three bodies and four lenses for 75,- is better than looking for the individual stuff. X-500's are not easy to find (for 20,-...) and the 50mm 1:1.7 always comes in handy for street photography. The Vivitar gets great reviews too. I am as happy as a child!

It is NOT a bad idea at all. I LOVE the A1 and used to have both the AE1 and AE1 P back when they were new. Neither are as good or pleasing to hold and shoot with as the A1. It is a very big step up in quality and prestige.

Canon A1 or Minolta srt-101? This would be my first film camera so hope you could help out :) Edit: i live in PH and the cheapest AI i could find is $200 in mint condition (but jus the body. I have to add atleast $100 more for the lens) while I found a mind conditioned minolta srt-101 for $100. What do you think?
@yahyalemnouar9751
@yahyalemnouar9751 5 жыл бұрын
The a1 is better, if you found it in mint condition with 3 lenses for 200$ then it's a chance not to miss. The sr-t 101 is mostly mechanical and thus meant for pros But if u are an enthusiast and want more features then i recommend you the a-1 or the xd series,

Yes its a beauty, but if it's a film camera you're after with all four modes, but with a shutter speed of 1/4000 sec then look at the Nikon FA. Takes all the beautiful AI-s glass. I bet that'll make your itch start up again.

Dont compare it to the x700, that doesnt even make sense. The A-1 was meant to compete with the Minolta XD11 which came out a year earlier. The XD11 is truly the first camera with Manual, Shutter, Aperture, AND Program modes. Minolta was just more humble about it.

Ida Ayu Yunita Widya Antari hmmm, if you learn the controls quick then yes as it features aperture priority, shutter priority and program mode, but maybe not for someone who doesn't understand how to shoot in those modes. They are pretty simple to learn though.

Ida Ayu Yunita Widya Antari any camera with a lightmeter and a full manual mode is great for beginnemodei'd recommand a Pentax k1000 or a Minolta srt. very reliable. and the full manual cameras actually teach you about photography. auto and semi auto modes just let you use the camera without you learning.. it's a waste of time for beginners. as long as the lightmeter works, you can't go wrong with a manual camera :)
