I just bought a Pentax Spotmatic SP from a Japanese on-line store in immaculate condition FOR OLD TIMES SAKE as it was my first camera in 1969. Hard to get film for a good price and lightmeter batteries are expensive.

Agree, I'm touring Japan atm and there's no bargains unless you count Tax Free discount as the bargain. This video is 2 years too late, there were bargains to be had up to then but no longer. What's not mentioned here is on the price tags in Japanese it states issues with the camera, hence the lower price. Don't rely on Google translate either to pick out the issues. The only pull really is there are vintage cameras in great/ unbelievable conditions but you'll pay the same as would back home on eBay. I've checked out all the usual stores in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kobe, Maruyama, Hiroshima and Fukuoka it's the same story. There's junk bins if you want to take a chance with repairing at home but if they aren't going to fix them in Japan then you need to put that in the equation. There's bargains in buying Fujifilm stock and any HK film but Cameras no, unless you're happy with problems with the optics. Also huge selection in accessories which can pull up the odd bargain.

Camera shops in the US have all but vanished save for the big guys in NYC. Japan was the manufacturer epicenter of cameras for many years thus the plethora of availability… I remember in the mid 70’s shopping for a camera with my father at Mailman’s in York PA. They had an entire department dedicated to photography, at least forty feet of glass topped counters with more on display behind the counters. In todays world your lucky to find four feet of display space for photography… Thank you for the insightful glimpse of the Japanese marketplace.

I loved your mindset about learning when you make a mistake. We can all do better with that. Don’t just be bummed out, be excited that you learned something and hopefully, you’re now forced to go back to Japan. Super cool camera! Congratulations.

Brings back memories 😊 Bought a Sigma DP3M at Map Camera in Shinjuku. Grabbed some bloom filters and accessories and the kind staff lady went accross town to their other store to get the items. A wonderful experience only held back by the fact that I didnt have more money to spend 😅.

on my first roll on the T2, I learned how easy it is to turn the exposure compensation dial as several photos came out overexposed. No lock on the dial.
@Leandro_Montibeler29 күн бұрын
Just so the lesson is really learned: that top dial is meters. Please don't mistake for feet and shoot an entire roll out of focus. I wouldn't blame you, I've made stupider mistakes, but don't make that one.

When I was in Hiroshima in 1979, there were many small family owned camera shops where you could bargain with the shop owner on used items. Even though they were small, they could also get something special on short notice (next day or two) from Tokyo. There were so many tempting items to buy but the exchange rate wasn't that great in late in 1979.

Glad that you found what you're looking for at Kitamura Camera, they indeed have one of the best camera collections in Japan. There is one other Kitamura Camera store in Shinjuku that is located a little bit far from other film camera stores in the videos which are close together, and I think that store has the best camera collection (bought mine there haha).

@R3TROSNAPPER27 күн бұрын

Not just with cameras but with any goods/merchandise in general, a lot of merchants have a "no photography [of merch]" rule. And more often than not, it probably stemmed from a past incident by a disrespectful tourist. Watch out for the "no photography" signage, sometimes it's very small, and often it's a simple icon so easily missed.

Having used a tonne of point and shoot cameras, I sold them all because they just don’t compare to using a good manual focus range finders I’m lucky enough to have a leica mp, and for street, zone focusing is way faster with a much higher in focus hit rate than any auto focusing point and shoot, and for other types of photography where I get to actually take time to focus it’s always consistently as I want it. I’m a firm believer that you can’t beat a range finder for travel and street when using wide or standard lenses. They just get a bit tricky if you shoot any tele

If the GR1 was in Lemon Camera in Shinjuku I looked at it too about a month ago. The coding on their labels will tell you the condition and it had a J for JUNK. When the Japanese label something junk it just means they don't have time to check it out 100%. Sometimes you get lucky and it works but most of the time you end up with "for parts". I bought a Bronica S2A there since I'm a medium format guy mostly. Lemon Camera has a few places in Tokyo, take card, and are very nice folks to deal with. I really enjoyed the video and I've been to all of the same places many times over since I live in Japan. You should come in February for the ICS Camera Show in Ginza, just be careful if you have G.A.S.

BTW, filming in store policies varies from store to store, but the Camera Kitamura (the one you ended purchasing from) in my city are super cool!
