I bought my first motorcycle last year - the mental health benefits have been the greatest for me, as someone who suffers from agoraphobia it's perfect. That feeling of being out on your own with nobody but yourself to talk to. The absolute absence of active thoughts, just you, the bike and the road. Nothing like it.
@redangrevival

Hi Dean, so good to hear that motorbiking benefits your mental health as well 👍 It was the main reason why I started riding, to get out more and do something that I enjoy. As well as it making me feel so alive. It massively helps with my anxiety etc... Motorbikes are special things and I truly do believe that they can help you heal. Nothing like setting off on a trip on the bike. Keep riding and stay safe, all the best.

Absolutely right on the money, if people were to see me when i'm riding, they would wonder at my sanity as i find myself often singing loudly to no one, grinning like a cheshire cat & just plain loving the feeling of complete freedom, like flying without a plane. I'm an olde geezer, 74 yrs young but on my bikes, i have two & am about to add # three to the flock, i feel 20 again. My ideal ending would be to just ride off into the sunset when the time comes. Really love your video, full of truths about the joys of riding, thanks so much, ric, ontario canada, this is one of the few freedoms we have left in our formerly free domain. Bye now, ric.

Hi, have just watched a couple of your journeys in Portugal and really enjoyed. Can recommend getting one of the smaller boats from Oporto and sailing up to the railway station in your video, then train back to Oporto which follows the river, a good day trip. I am now in my sixties been riding for most of my life and I just want to congratulate you on the video on your 5 reasons you should ride a motorcycle. Couldn’t have put it better, you covered every angle. I have people say to me, you went on your own as they don’t understand that a day on the bike is not ‘ on your own ‘ your with your bike and many comrades who wave or even a simple nod to each other. I wish you well and be safe, your doing a grand job and great videos which again brings us back to , the joys of motorcycles.

Hi Michael, thank you really pleased to hear that you enjoyed the videos 👍. Unfortunately I am now out of the Douro area, but thanks for the advice that sounds like a definite plan for next time. Would be brilliant. Thank you so much, I really do appreciate that, it means a lot. Thanks for your kind words and support. Exactly right, you are never alone, just a nod or wave from the locals is brilliant. Then chatting to people at a coffee stop etc... is great. Then back on the road and just cruise appreciating life. All the best to you.

Great video. I am lucky enough to live in New Zealand, 66 years old, just rode my bike through amazing countryside, windy road and lots of bikes on it. Ended up at small beachside town. When I got there my face hurt from smiling, ended up standing around with 7 other bikers ( not sure if I like that term) from teenagers to me, strangers who had a really great time talking because we shared the same experience.

Hi Robert, yes I can imagine they are. I have never learnt to ride horses but I can definitely understand how freeing and good for the soul they can be. I have a de-cat on the exhaust and have the Vance and Hines slip ons. I may prefer a full system just to gain some power increase and free'er air flow, but other than that I think it is great. Has a nice noise to it but not too loud. I am very pleased with it 👍

I really wanted to move to Spain this year but the wife won't have it so feelin stuck here in the dismal wet climate that is the UK . It actually becomes hard to motivate ones self to do anything really it's like you loose interest in everything you used to find worth doin seeing and feeling really .Just trying to figure out the whys and wherefores and it's kinda not one thing ,I know ya should just kick yourself up the arse and move on but it does in fact nag you into submission .I am trying to put how these things get you but probably haven't managed it to well . .But hey live for the good days man eh . Sorry I wasn't liking your comment for how you are feeling! I am really sorry to hear that, it is sooo hard. It has definitely been a long winter which really does not help you feel good, not long at all now until the sun will poke its head out and you can go for a nice ride with the sun at your face 👍 I know what you mean it is so confusing as to why you feel bad and what is causing it.I am no phycologist!! But I find it helps me a lot to not try and work out why I feel bad, because just doing that in itself makes you feel worse and you get in even more of a muddle. The more I think about it the worse I get! Treating yourself with love and compassion (sorry if that sounds corny!) is the best thing to do.I find if I let things be as they are and not try to force feelings then it helps. Sorry I am not trying to preach, it's just what helps me. Really pleased you liked the video and thanks for watching as always. Cheers 💪

If you're thinking of becoming a rider, enjoy it while you can. If the government have their way, motorbikes will only be expensive toys for the rich in the near future. No more new ones to be sold sometime soon after 2030. Petrol will become way more expensive and the infrastructure suffer. 'Clear Air' charges in every single town and city, even (especially) for residents. Etc. Etc. Fingers crossed the government can be persuaded to see that motorcycling is fundamental to keeping many people mobile in a relatively cheap and environmental way. They generally seem to hate everything ICE these days or ignore motorcycles completely.

Re. the commute, it does sound weird, but it was absolutely true for me. I commuted every day, all year on a big scooter, from Essex into central London and loved it. Hated the train and tube commute I used to do, but once I started riding in I looked forward to going to work, even when I disliked the actually work I was doing hehe. Believe it or not sliding through, smoothly and safely, the heavy traffic was more fun than public transport. Also it was cheaper and quicker than the train and tube alternative...

Hi David, I completely understand that 100% 👍 I love riding my bike in London haha, it is such an involving experience. I prefer a nice country road but I still do enjoy riding in the city. Hi, I definitely see where you are coming from, but I am not sure I completely agree with that. Absolutely the more you ride the better you get, as motorbiking really is a skill and you are forever learning. If you have a long time off of the bike then you should be extra careful when riding again but this should by no means put you off from riding! Everyone has to start somewhere and you can learn at your own pace, some of the best rides I have had have been when I have not ridden for a while. It is so involving. Thank you for your message, all the best to you and hope you can get out riding soon 👍

Mmm, I agree with some of your points and some of the others I think are very subjective. Fuel…the bike does 43mpg and the car does 50! Buying….if you fancy the likes of Ducati, Harley, BMW or a few others top end bikes, these can cost as much as a small hatchback, both new and secondhand. My reasons for motorcycling at 60+ yrs old, brings back memories of my youth🤔, it activates all the senses and gives me the ‘buzz’, but the biggest is……..pure enjoyment👍😊 Another great video👍
@redangrevival
@redangrevival 2 жыл бұрын
All good, thanks really pleased you liked the video. Of course the points are open to interpretation. I get an average of 60 mpg from my Speedmaster 🤔 Agreed the premium brands of motorbikes can be the equivalent price of a small hatch back. But if you compare the most premium motorcycle to the most premium car then the price difference is huge!! I completely understand it making you feel younger! So pleased you find enjoyment in it as well. At the end of the day all us motorbiker's are kindred spirits. We all get different benefits from them. Cheers and all the best 👍

5 excellent reasons for sure, and very perceptive. There is one mode of transportation that I feel is equally rewarding, and that is sailing. I love to be out on the water for the same reasons as riding a motorcycle. But, it is much more expensive, and you need a lot of skill. That’s not to say that you don’t need skill to ride a motorcycle - you need far more than most riders have. But, you can learn the basics and get right out there in a day or two. If you do that in sailing, you will get into serious trouble. So, for ease of access, motorcycles win.

Thanks. I agree with you about the sailing point 👍 I was a sailing instructor for 4 years and then went to work on yachts for a number of years after that. Absolutely love sailing, I miss it so much. I suppose you are right I have never thought of it in that way. Motorbikes and sailing are very similar, the feeling of freedom and fresh air etc.... A very good point, all the best. Cheers

I just bought a good used 2022 Bonneville after 50 years away from bikes. I won't be riding until spring after a two day rider course to hopefully bring the skills back. This video hits the target. All of it is so true. I have some new rules given my age - no alcohol, no interstate highways, no city stuff, wear good gear, no speeding. I just want to burble around the back roads in this beautiful rural place where I live, (Vermont in US), and come back home to my wife in one piece and more relaxed. sub'd.

For me the best way to get around a city is by bicycle, preferably by Brompton, and being a Brompton you don't have to leave it any where to get stolen, you just fold it up and take it with you. It's free, apart from the initial purchase cost and you get exercise. Even riding outside cities in rural areas cycling is pretty good. Whether you are on a motorcycle or bicycle most cities are dirty crowded places that I can't wait to get out of and so seldom go to them. Don't get me wrong, like you I love motorcycling, love motor bikes, but I also love cycling as well. It is the freedom and simplicity that being on two wheels motorcycling or cycling gives but especially cycling that is so good for a positive mental attitude PMA. Have cycled all my life from when I was very young and it will always be my first love, but have also ridden motorcycles for much of my adult life as well. Travel on two wheels is a good way to travel. Cycling is a lot lower risk than motorcycling as you are moving more slowly. The only time you are really going to die is if some knob head in a vehicle runs into or over you which has happened to me a few times knocking me flying. Same can happen on a motorcycle, but you can also lose control and crash for any number of reasons whether your fault, lack of concentration, failure to anticipate, road conditions or some other external factor. The consequences can be fatal. Less so on a bicycle as generally you are safer as you are moving more slowly. In cities there is a lot more dedicated infrastructure some of it good some not so good. Also you can genuinely get away from traffic and people as you can go off road on quiet trails where you couldn't on a motorcycle even with an adv motorcycle. Eg cycling the Thames path or along the Kennet or some of the long distance trails. You can easily go off stealth wild camping for a few days with a bicycle in the UK and not bother any one, not so much with a motor bike although it's not impossible. Don't get me wrong I love motorcycling for all the reasons you give, but I equally love cycling for all these reasons you give here and more, the endorphins, keeping you fit and healthy, the low impact on the environment, the low cost and practically zero running costs if you service your bike yourself. By comparison a motorcycle is alot more expensive to run - tax, MOT and insurance for a start even though I have insurance as a cyclist which is peanuts and part of BC membership. Plus you have to put fuel in a motorbike even if does do 60mpg and then there are the servicing costs which can be as much as a car and more depending on the bike you have or can be a lot less if you have the knowledge skill and tools to DIY. When cycling there is the feeling of accomplishment having ridden 50, 60 , 80 or 100+ miles in a day and sleeping very well that night, hidden away some where or over looking a fabulous view. In fact for me cycling and motorcycling are tied in equal first place although cycling has the edge I'm afraid as when you cycle regularly you get very fit which you don't do motorcycling which is the only downside for me. You are pretty inactive sitting on a motorcycle by comparison. If I cycle regularly I don't need to do much else to stay fit where as I do if I ride my motorbikes for a few days. It's good to have variety, to do both. Just being on two wheels is the thing. Stops life becoming dull. It's great to pass stationary traffic and not waste your life stuck in traffic jams and the inevitable feeling of loss of control meaning stress levels quickly rise ......... so yeah two wheels in the city is the way to go. A motorbike is a very good way to get some where quickly with minimal hassle or going for a nice leisurely cruise on a summer's day on a Speedmaster ..... Spring is nearly here. Life on two wheels is good.

As a biker. I know if I'm in trouble. I'll most likely get help from a cyclist or motorcyclists. We are kindred spirit.
@bigdavedogdad
@bigdavedogdad 2 жыл бұрын
I know it comes down to personal situation and temperament to some extent - and I don't want to start an argument - but I've got to disagree with the cycling being better or safer, for city riding. As a motorcyclist who is also a cyclist - having actually been trained on the highway code and probably told in your training to be responsible for your own safety - you are no doubt one of the safer cyclists, but even then, I disagree cycling is 'the best way' anywhere, but especially in a city. There's almost nowhere a bicycle can go that a motorcycle can't and a ton of places and situations in which a motorcycle is both more viable and safer and the city is one of them. I'm not really arguing with you, Alex, as most of your comments about the positives of cycling aren't specifically about city cycling, but you did start by saying "the best way to get around a city is by bicycle" and that statement, I'm afraid, from what I've experienced, filled me with horror. Motorcycles are much more visible and loud. Much more road presence. Good indicators and mirrors help too. Motorcycles are much more able to resist even being hit. I have been side swiped twice on a motorcycle and wasn't even knocked down, maybe I was a bit lucky, but a bicycle would have folded under the car rather than get shunted sideways. I wasn't hurt either. Motorcycles have the speed and acceleration to move smoothly with traffic flow, but also move easily through and around given the opportunity. Cyclists have no choice but constantly be overtaken. Cyclists constantly have to undertake (a very dangerous move) to make progress in a city or busy town. Filtering is *not* safe on a bicycle as you are very likely to end up in the middle of traffic lanes suddenly moving around you at 30mph. Moving slowly is not safer at all in city traffic. Motorcyclists are all trained, tested and wear armour and, if things do go wrong, have insurance to help them and their bikes recover. I doubt many cyclists have many of any of those. No MOTs and service intervals to keep bicycles in good working order, either. On anything but a relatively very short ride/commute, bicycles are not viable. Most months of the year, while motorcycling you might get cold/wet and fatigued on a very long journey, which is dangerous, but on a bicycle the prospect of a long cold/wet commute is even more dangerous even if it is viable (and cycling hard enough to stay warm on a long/wet commute would just make physical exhaustion the danger instead of concentration-type fatigue). I commuted a 100 mile round journey into central London every day for years on a motorcycle (well, a maxi-scooter, but essentially the same for this purpose). For the inner London miles of my journey, much was 'the same' as a cyclist's. With what I saw, regularly, with cyclists in dangerous situations (through both their own and others' actions) I would never, ever commute into a city on a bicycle. Far far too dangerous unless you have a dedicated cycle route all the way (and those have and are their own problems). I saw near misses with bicycles way more often than with motorcycles. As for motorcyclists going too fast? Yes, some do, but that is up to the rider and rarely a factor in a city ride. With a commute, there is much more danger from other drivers than with your own speed and that is a much greater issue on a bicycle than a motorcycle. Also, just to say, cyclists *do* go too fast. I would regularly see them approaching pedestrians and junctions and busy traffic snarls too fast for inadequate bicycle brakes, especially in the wet. Yes, a bicycle is more healthy re. exercise, but for commuting, you won't remain healthy when your mowed down by a lorry. I'd rather do a motorcycle commute and then go for a run or even cycle in the time I saved. Also cycling in commuter traffic is not very healthy for your lungs without very good filter masks (similar for motorcycles, yes). Yes, a bicycle is cheaper, but just not viable for many commutes and a motorcycle is way cheaper than a car (and even public transport, I found). The speedmaster isn't the ideal commuter, no, but viable for commutes and then also useful for most other types of journey. If cycling for a commute most people would still probably need/want a motor vehicle *as well* so, aside from fuel, is that cheaper or more ecological? For a commute, ideally, you would use a 125+ bike or scooter I think - something that has road presence and enough power to at least go with the flow - but, no way would I cycle for a regular commute. Far too dangerous. Maybe in Amsterdam. Not in England. Not unless things change radically (and radical/quick change would be dangerous given our history and infrastructure). It will be some time before city cycle commuting is a good idea for most people, if ever. Countries like Holland have decades (much more even?) of history leading to how bicycles are viable and safe in cities that we just don't have. Sorry for the long comment. Like I said, not really meaning to get at Alex Morgan at all - sorry if it seems that way - just a response to the general comment that bicycles are best for cities when I have clearly had such different experiences.

@@expatbiker6598 I would like to think that we are. If ever I see a cyclist or biker stopped by the side of the road looking like they need help whether I am riding one my bicycles, motorbikes or indeed driving my car, I always stop to ask if they are OK or whether they need any help? The biker community is really friendly much more so than the cycling community and another reason I ride motorbikes. Yes there are w****rs who ride like idiots way beyond their abilities on sports bikes or other very high powered bikes, but generally if you talk to another biker they are friendly. I haven't found this to the same extent within the cycling community which is a pity although most cyclists, touring cyclists/club cyclists are ok. To me we are all two wheelers and vulnerable so need to look out for one another, be considerate and tolerant. Things can go very seriously wrong for both groups very quickly so we have this common high level of risk when riding on the roads. Also as I cyclist I have been the first on the scene with car drivers that have just made a mistake driven off the road and crashed and trapped in their cars, called the emergency services and stayed with them until help arrives. I've done this a couple of times actually. It's just basic humanity, doing the right thing. ATB.

Thanks buddy for a great video. I currently have a maxi scoot 650 which I love but I had a very close call a few days ago when some idiot decided to pull right in his lane for no reason (there were no right turns) as I was filtering, slowly and legally. Really put the wind up my sails (I could just about control the bike as it wobbled violently - I put my foot down and that seemed to do the trick) - I know it’s a very subjective thing but if you’ve had a similar experience, did you carry on riding or have a break for a while? I’m trying to decide whether I should sell my bike or carry on riding - I’m not a young whippersnapper but at the same time, not an oldie particularly!!

Touch wood I have never had as closer call as that, but I have had a few close ones where I think that could have gone the other way, so to speak. Well done for recovering the bike. I suppose you have to follow your heart. I would personally say that experience will make you a much better and safer rider.You will be hyper aware of it in the future which will make you will make you safer on the road. I would say slowly start riding again, but don't push yourself to be uncomfortable. I hope that helps, stay safe.

@@redangrevival thanks for your reply my friend. I have been riding for many many years (and all on Suzuki Burgman‘s) so I think my road awareness is as good as it can be but, as we both know, you can never judge what another person is going to do. I made a point of riding my bike the following day on the same route and using the same manoeuvre and all was good so fingers crossed, this won’t happen again. I do as much as I can to keep safe - togging up in all the correct protective bike gear so I’m as safe as any motorcyclist can be. Ride safe, take care 😀

Hello, fellow freedom riders. I have the money to buy a motorcycle but because I live close to London, in Wembley area. I am having the hardest time getting insurance because I do not have a garage. I live in a house with a private driveway but I can’t get one insurance company to quote. Part of my issue is also the fact that I have not held insurance in 6 years. I have zero no claims bonus. I understand that may bring the price up, but combined with not having a garage to keep the bike. I have not been able to get even a quote. **Disclaimer. I was attempting to get the Triumph Bonneville SpeedMaster bike. Does anyone have any advice?

Hi, sorry to hear that. It is really hard in London with insurance etc... Soooo expensive, I think everyone has the same problem. Depending on how often you use the bike, is there any near by under ground parking you can rent? Worth a search on google.

@@redangrevival Thanks for your reply. I’m going to keep working on this. I saw your review on the Mutt Mastiff 250. I think maybe buy that to get in the insurance ladder. They may not bawk at parking in driveway. Not a huge hit if it does get stolen. Will place anti-theft alarm just in case. It’s a small bike, but will get me two years no claim. Then I can go for the Triumph when I get garage situation sorted. Thanks again. You’ve replied twice and I think it shows your dedication to your subscribers. Great job mate. I love your adventure series. It’s not all bike shots and driving. You mix a little of your thoughts and bring us into your world. Well done. Keep it up. You’re defo my favourite motorcycle channel. One day, it would be great to join you on a ride. Maybe a subscriber meet and greet. Ciao Bella. 🏍

Got my Speedmaster Goldline LE in January. You are going to absolutely love it. I added on through Madstad (windscreens,) Viking (saddlebags - but the quick disconnect system does need a little spacer modification, and they sit on a bit of an angle because of the angle of the fender bolts, but still look awesome and are lockable,) and Triumph Cleveland for floorboards, teardrop mirrors and some other things, like the backrest pad (but you have to get the backstay through Triumph and they are on back order…) All easily removable to bring it back to barebones within a few minutes. Absolutely amazing motorcycle, and a piece of motorcycle art. Enjoy!

Locktight probably won't help Gus' problem. If you are moving the mirrors it will 'break' the locktight hold and the locktight won't re-hold. Locktight is for keeping things in place, rather than just increasing friction for things that are moved. I believe what Gus is doing is effectively undoing the nut and bolt a little every time he moves the mirror back and forth and eventually it gets too loose to stay put. I'm not sure Gus' problem can be fixed short of getting mirrors that are designed to be folded in and out.
