I highly suggest a volunteer department first. Mine had a 17 yr old on it. He obviously couldn’t go on fire calls but he went on small ones and it gives you a lot of experience that way when you can go on calls you have some experience. That and it gives you a chance to gauge if it’s what you want to do and if you transition to full time you have that experience to lean on

I have complete respect for firefighting since my dad was a captain. But it's important to be clear about the ugly side of it. Firefighters tend to be first on the scene and the things they see can be traumatizing. People need to understand its not all good. The things you see can greatly effect your mental state of mind and cause ptsd. Which in turn can create stress on you and your family. You can't save everyone and some situations may hit close to home, prepare for that.

Wonderful video! To me, Firefighting is the PERFECT job for me because I tried really hard to get into IT and other things, however I just struggled there and I never had a passion for those. But for firefighting, I've had a MASSIVE passion and I really enjoy learning more about them. The 4 days on, 4 days off sounds really exhausting at first but I bet soon you will get used to it and it will be okay. I love how firefighting gives you so many days off, I would love to wake up whilst everyone is rushing to work and I have 3 days off in a row or something hahahah I will NEVER get bored of saving lives and I love that you get to know the family of the people you have rescued, I will never get tired of that Man, I really want to be a firefighter, I really wish I become one soon, vacancies are just very difficult, but once you're in. You're pretty much the happiest person haha

I agree 100% with what you’re saying , especially the part about this job being meaningful and being recognized because the impact it has on others by what we’ve done for them. Recently I retired after being an EMT for 30 years, and even now, when people find out I was an EMT, they thank me for my service. So this ripple effect, or this aspect of it can continue even after retiring from the service, which gives me the satisfaction that I really helped to make a meaningful difference in my chosen profession. Great video as always!!! 😎👍👍👍

Ever since childhood I (like many kids) loved watching the fire engines go by. Most grow out of it..I never did. The first "real" book I read was "Report From Engine Co. 82"...(RIP Dennis Smith), when I was 8 years old (I've read it many times since). Met Dennis by chance in '86 at the offices of Firehouse magazine. Anyway, whenever I would look at images/film of the horse drawn era, I would feel "goosebumps." I always found this very profound, and powerful. I questioned it. In 1988 when living in Northampton, MA (was dispatching in Amherst for Hampshire County), I had a vivid dream of being in an 1800's firehouse, there was a classic-to-the-era looking man --handlebar mustache and all, sitting at a desk; I turned around and there was a steamer. On it's boiler was emblazoned "Philadelphia 1882"...I then recall a bell sounding, and then I was running down a cobblestone street, with a tremendous weight on my shoulders. Fast forward to 1996, I was living in Boston; I was in the Boston Public Library (Copley Square) studying for a tourguide job; I'm flipping through a book and see an image if what I believe to be that steamer from the dream. Okay Erich, now some nice people in white coats are here...just let them put this special jacket on you; they'll be bringing you to your new home...you'll love it.

I think you are in the same position many, many people have found themselves. That said, I would encourage you to find a way to transition into firefighting if you feel as though it would be more meaningful to you. If you can go to school on evenings/weekends, etc. It will be hard, but it can be done. In fact a guy on my crew was a union carpenter for several years before he became a firefighter/medic. It's tough, but you can certainly do it!

I’m 19 right now. Graduated from Navy bootcamp a month ago. When I get out in 6 years I will either be a cop or a firefighter. I’ve wanted to be in one of those careers ever since I was really young but I’m still struggling with which career to choose.

In the same damn boat as you buddy, I have my BA in CJ but I have a bunch of Fire certs and undoubtedly have more experience in the fire service than in law enforcement. I love both fields and honestly I am split between which profession to stick with permanently.

I realize what I haven’t had in my life is purpose, a regular job doesn’t do that for me that’s why the fire department is something I know that will give me a purpose. I like helping strangers and to risk my life for it gives me a purpose I start my first class tomorrow at 6. If it something I truly wanna build on And go for a paid career, I have to start out volunteering.

Anyone who really loves their job is gonna say it's the best job in the world lol. But firefighting for me seems like it is. I love nature and I love having a purpose and helping people. The main reason is I want have an impact like you said. I think that's very important and why most people hate their jobs.

I'm 20 I've always loved firefighters and respected them, I finished school this year for Auto Technology which I also love doing but I feel I could be doing more. Which is why I've decided to return to school for a fire science program I want to be a help to people, save them and be an inspiration to people that feel like they can't do anything.....they actually can

I was in highschool almost 10 years ago, And in highschool I wanted to be a graphic designer in the clothing industry and was too young to know I had potential in exactly what I knew I wanted to earn a living doing. I was too young and dumb but also my parents never really supported me and really I did not even realize they were neglectful. so I did not get a chance to continue school until I realized my life was turning into my parents life that did not go to school and never talked about getting and education or a career. I did not know my parents did not mind struggling. So I gave God an opportunity to help me because I was not a believer. Started feeling completely different. Always happy even when I'm supposed to be down. And I am now going into a career that I am creating for myself in clothing , t shirts jeans,sweats,hoodies and what ever graphic design can offer me. From wedding invitations to video and photography but I still haven't gotten in to video Thank God he found me 🙏.

Good evening sir, I have a question regarding interview questions I was hoping you could answer. My Fire Academy is currently in our Jobs unit where we prepare for interviews and learn how to dress etc. The Battalion Chief running the unit has been adamant that we should almost NEVER ask questions after an interview because it may come off as negative, for example “what are some of the qualities and characteristics of your top performing employees?” A negative view on that could be that I should already know the top qualities of a Firefighter and should have touched on them in my resume. This is contradictory to everything I have been told in the past as asking questions shows interest and that you want to get familiar with the job. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

I've wondered what the differences between a public sector/civilian firefighter and a military firefighter. Is it safe to assume that public/civi do more actual fire fighting, helping people and saving lives? Again, I would only assume that military would not see much "action" just mainly training for rare occasions something goes wrong

I am getting out of the military later this year and am trying to figure out how to do EMT and Fire 1 and 2 as soon as possible when i get out. I’m married and have a child so the schooling is making it difficult to be able to financially sustain my family. What would you recommend?

Hi, Im really want to be a firefighter, I'm tired of working in a warehouse making boxes when I can do so much good for people and have a purpose. You mentioned that alot in your video and your 100% right. What should be my first step, Ive called my department for volunteer opportunities, or is there something else I must do first. Thank you.
@FRodAvilez3 жыл бұрын
It all depends, but yes, starting off with volunteering with a department will go a long way. With gaining experience and the department paying for you to obtain your certifications. After you get your cert you can apply for career departments.
@miguelgutierrez19083 жыл бұрын
Currently in the Fire Academy right now. A few first steps should be contacting Fire Academy’s, sometimes a college can offer it. See if you’re state needs you to get a EMT-B cert. if so look for EMT courses to preferably take before the Academy so right after you can apply unless you do it after the Academy then that works too. Be mentally able to overcome any challenges thrown at you. Ex for me was confined space training but I made it through that portion just fine. Good luck !
