I gave it a shot based on the incredible art style alone, and that sent me down the rabbit hole. I’ve found several other VNs I love since then. Senren Banka just so happens to be another favorite. Very good list. Here's 5 of my picks: -Fureraba: Friend to Lover. If you liked making * lovers, you'll like Fureraba as well (it has the trademark absurd comedy and fluffy moe SMEE is known for). -If My Heart Had Wings. A VN about flying. Probably one of the more chill VN's (while still having some plot and drama), I really like the music. It was the 2nd VN I ever read too. -Otome * Domain. If you can get past the crossdressing protag (who's awesome btw!), and, ahem, the first 5 minutes of the VN, then you can expect a lot of funny shenanigans! -9-nine series. A pretty epic supernatural series. While episode 1 might be a slow start to the series, the series has some great humour, great music, and some high stakes drama. -The Fruit of Grisaia. Awesome writing, some quirky humor and equally quirky characters, and rather drama heavy at times, this VN will make you feel every emotion. It was the first VN I ever read, and what an intro to the genre...

Aokana was part of that first handful afterwards and the routes I did were quite good, I'd love to see more recommendations with VN's that are with characters that are actually over 21 not that theirs anything wrong with a Highschool romance story but I somewhat prefer something more relatable. Majikoi is the one that brought me to Visual Novels. It was college and was bored out of my mind, so I tried reading visual novels because I was interested in them for quite a while already. You don't know how I always looked forward to the fan translation for the spinoffs. Majikoi has great romance, loveable characters, the comedy is good, action is thrilling, overall, a great VN for newcomers. My only con is the H scenes are too long that I mostly skip them once I see the artwork. Majikoi S's Agave Route which is considered the true route is the best for me. The main heroine in that route is Koyuki. That ditzy well-endowed marshmallow-loving ball-shattering kicks girl.

I'd definitely like some more mature romance VNs, ideally with characters that look adult and no step-sister love interests. I love the Cute Girls Doing Cute Things genre, but blending that with romance when it's first person POV can get... odd.

Am I the only person in the world who both loves Aokana *and* thinks the romance in it was...perfunctory? Shoehorned in? Added almost as a matter of course? I don't say that to trash talk the game; Aokana is probably my favorite non-gameplay VN. But, if I hadn't already known that the routes included romantic couplings with the character your chose, I would have been very surprised by it. There's no chemistry or flirting like, at all, in the common route. It's all sports, all the time, and then the romance just abruptly sprouts up shortly after you pick a girl to train. Again - not saying Aokana is bad (my opinion is very much the opposite). But, I feel like romance would be the last item on my list of "What made this story so good?" ...That is, if it were on there at all.
@aidanwhite37699 ай бұрын
Watch the anime, obviously other major issues but jesus the lack of romance is felt heavily, imo it kind of helps the whole coach + player trust dynamic as well. Plus extra1 was my favourite part of the series so I'm completely bias to the romance cause of Mashiro
@TheAugustHail9 ай бұрын
I think out of all of the routes, if you're looking for a deeply traditional romance Mashiro's Route and EXTRA 1 fits more that style. I think that the chemistry is formed because the sports is such a strong factor in it. Both of aspects complement each other really well, and I believe AOKANA wouldn't have as much impact if one part was missing.
@vstalbain9 ай бұрын
@@TheAugustHail I think if you removed the romance, the sports drama for all four heroines would still be interesting. Reason being? I coach fighting games. Some of the people I've coached have gone on to become pretty exceptional at their respective games. What was interesting to me about Aokana is that I've taught someone much like every character in the supporting cast (SPOILERS AHEAD for anyone who hasn't read Aokana): - I've taught people like Asuka, who don't have the greatest technical understanding, but their intuition (usually honed further through god-knows-how-many hours of scrims) and positive attitude towards learning are so good that they almost will themselves into being a force to be reckoned with. - On the flipside, I've taught people that are like Asuka's antithesis, Rika - they are students of the game and its mechanics, and their fundamentals are solid; but, their attempt to boil the game down to "When you see the opponent do "A", respond with "B" keeps them from honing their intuitions - the very same thing that makes Asuka so fearsome. - I've taught plenty of people like Mashiro, who, whether it's just that they're genuinely not cut out to be a top player, or simply due to their own inexperience with the genre, really struggle to reach the lofty goals that they set for themselves. They are best served by being reminded that the ideal way to improve is to seek true fulfillment in perfecting your craft; that if they can do this, the improvement will happen before their eyes. I've brought several of these types of players to Master rank at their game, which, while this doesn't signify that they're national tournament material, it does put them in elite company, and it's proof positive to them that they can go farther than they had ever imagined. - And, I've taught players who were enigmatic like Misaki: Gifted with natural talent and an ability to easily break down the game and understand it, they rise to high levels very fast. But, this also affects their ego, and failure is devastating to them. It's easier for them, by default, to pretend like they don't care, rather than face the genuine fear - the real heartbreak of losing even when they tried their hardest. ...And you know what? I never once had a romantic tryst with a single one of them lmao. I'm not trying to make the argument that romance has no place in Aokana, though; just that, I think it could have been done better, and that the individual stories of these characters are interesting enough on their own without needing something unrelated to prop them up.
@TheAugustHail9 ай бұрын
@@vstalbain That's an entirely fair assessment and your lived experience paints a really unique perspective. It's really a treat that AOKANA's premise and execution is solid, that even if you took out the romance, it's strong storytelling at those focused moments (EXTRA 2 is proof of that) And yes, there are definitely weak-spots in AOKANA's romance-side (Misaki and Masaya's relationship dynamic, Rika in general) However, if strictly set as a sports-drama, it loses that "appeal". I'm not a sports fan *at all*. Sure, I like them on occasion and enjoy them (Haiykuu, Chiyahafuru, even loosely Sound Euphonium), but I don't actively seek them out or vibe with them as hard as I do romance titles. I would also like believe that if I pitched AOKANA as a sports drama, I wouldn't get much positive feedback, compared to if I pitched it with romance. At least to eroge-minded individuals. Again, there isn't anything faulting AOKANA as an very good sports story on its own, but that romance element does add charm and uniqueness to it, regardless of the quality (although the romance not being terrible in complementing the sports writing-wise does save it from becoming too off-balanced (if so I would have said that the romance should have been taken out all-together))
@vstalbain9 ай бұрын
@@TheAugustHail Yeah, I think you're right to say that it has more appeal to call it a romance than a sports drama; even as a huge sports fan, "romance" sounds more exciting to me too, lol! I also agree that the romance in Aokana is just fine. I do think there's a little too much of it in some routes, Mashiro in particular (surprise - I hated EXTRA 1 and loved EXTRA 2, lol). I just like it better when I see the romantic chemistry coming from a little farther away - Aokana just had virtually no build-up, which makes them all feel strange to me. Konno Asta's stories (If My Heart Had Wings, A Sky Full of Stars) do a good job of showing chemistry early by having the main character and the girls flirt with each other plenty along the way to the decisions where you pick the routes. I like seeing a romance either build up like that; or I like to see proof that the rapport has long been established before the story begins (e.g Sumika in Muv-Luv Extra).

I don’t know, I remember reading Aokana within like a couple of days and liked it A LOT. Right now, after lots of recommendations I started Kinkoi, my impressions after the prologue and the “main” route are pretty positive, however after reading the other routes(I’m finishing the last one currently) I’m left with a mixed feelings. I don’t know if it’s just me, but many of the heroine routes feel a bit drawn out without any actual interrelationships developed at some point. It’s like the beginnings are good and interesting but once you “get the girl” Kinkoi just throws a tone of H content at you(to the point of h-scenes actually being longer than the characters’ interactions themselves), not to mention their repetitiveness from route to route. I understand that these title are about interactions and all, not much of a plot development but still it feels redundant at times. I would say that Kinkoi is great with it heights but most of the routes feel forgettable, which I never felt with Aokana. Has anyone noticed that too? P.s. Liked Elle’s route though)

You should have renamed the video to "5 MOEGE Visual Novels You Should Check Out!" instead. At least half of the titles there have very shallow romance or just little focus on it. The real deep romance stories are something drama heavy like White Album 2 or even from pure utsuge genre like House in Fata Morgana/Kana Little Sister. That's what I call "Romance" - not all that "cutesy fan service shop to help you select your favorite waifu" type of "romance" you trying to sell here.
