On the subject of discounted camping, we'd like to add one more for the older Odd Squad members. *America the Beautiful - The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass* 0ne of you must be 62 or older. The Price is $80 one time, not yearly - one time for life! With the card you get into National Parks for FREE and Campsites are half price! This covers lands managed by National Park Service US Forest Service US Fish & Wildlife Service Bureau of Land Management Bureau of Reclamation US Army Corps of Engineers And some lands joint managed by the State and Federal agency's The majority do not have hookups, but many will have flush toilet bathrooms, free dump stations and some even have pay showers (bring quarters). As an example we spent 4 days in Yellowstone, the cost (entrance fee and campground in the middle of the park) would have been $115 ..... we paid a total of $40. Some say getting old isn't fun .... WRONG! For you young ones this is something to look forward to. For you over 62's, what card is in your wallet?!?! Andy & Kim

We’ve been full-time for a year with TT, and recently added the Trails Collection, all of which has been a blessing. We work part-time in the restaurant industry, and move with the seasons. Having the basic membership and Boondocking or Harvest Hosting for that week we have to be out has not been a giant challenge. So...we have a few other "camping" memberships to recommend. Many of these recommendations are a clean safe place to park, NOT, a campground. We are full time in a 5th wheel for the past 5+ years. BPOE Elks Lodge has well over a 1000 lodges with RV facilities. Memberships range from $80 to several hundred dollars a year. A membership anywhere allows you to use the facilities wherever you find a lodge. Prices are $25-$35 a night (or less), many lodges have FHU. We have met many RVers who have stayed at the Moose Lodges and Ealges Lodges also. Another consideration, we have stayed in County Fairgrounds in several parts of the country also. NO membership required. We enjoy your channel, STAY ODD!!

Good Sam Club is good for $0.05 / gallon off gas at Pilot/Flying J for gasoline, and $0.08/ gallon off for diesel. If you are on the road a lot, that discount can add up and make the discount worth it in a year. Also gives you 10% discounts at Camping World & free dump station on certain days at Camping World / 15% discount on propane refills at Camping World. Those aren't exactly camping discounts, but if you are on the road a lot, this one might make sense for $29/year (which is what I paid at Camping World to get a $70 discount on an item I was buying -- yes, they have closeout bins with super great prices on some stuff, but you have to have the Good Sam Club card to get the advertised price).
@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
We have a sour taste from the purchase of our RV at Camping World. It makes us sad because Good Sam sounds like it has it's value. But we can't bring ourselves to work with Camping world ever again.
@Roobah
@Roobah 5 жыл бұрын
@@RVOddCouple I hear you. I got up and walked out on an RV contract purchase because I didn't like the customer service I was getting at Camper World. I didn't realize then, that was the fashionable and right thing to do -- I guess I got lucky... Or I did a good job listening to my gut instincts. I walked in by myself as a retired female. Normally, I probably would be a prime sucker for them. I guess they should have treated me better. I am truly sorry for all those suckered by them all over the US. I was there because they had a really good price on a used RV, and I wanted it. Knowing what I know now, I know it would have had $1000's added to the price until I wouldn't be getting a deal any more. Anyway, after I bought my used shuttle bus (instead of the Fleetwood Class A I was looking at), I needed to put the extra money not spent at CW into some upgrades as a conversion, the guy doing my work on solar install needed me to pick up some parts at Camping World - about a 1/2 mile from his house. That is why I went there. Ideally with more time, would have ordered Prime shipping from Amazon, or driven 15 miles to Home Depot. But in a pinch, Camping World was where I shopped. In this location, there was a mom & pop RV shop next door. I went there FIRST because of my newly-minted aversion to CW (bad experience). That location, prices were DOUBLE expected, and no returns allowed if any problems. Given that I was working from a shopping list someone else made for me, that was more risk than I wanted to take buying parts, and that is how I ended up shopping at CW. I only got the Good Sam card to get the $70 discount on an item I was buying and KNEW I would be putting miles on my vehicle that might cover the cost of fuel discounts. In the end, Pilot and Flying J are not always the cheapest discount gas stations. Look up Shell... HIGH priced gas, but in some locations with online perks or discount codes, it can be cheaper than anywhere else. (Example: One tank of gas I bought got a $0.25/gal bonus discount)

Oh crap! We just bought a 10 year membership with Coast to Coast. It seemed like a great deal when they explained it to us over 90 minutes, and the membership included a Good Sam membership as well. Plus, our adult children are eligible to stay at any of their cabins, chalets, houseboats, yurts, etc. for $30/night (if it's over 7 nights). Oh, well. Live and learn. They did give us a really good deal because my husband is a Vietnam veteran. Plus, they will store our RV for $1/day and have us set up in the camp site of our choice (unless it's taken, of course) with just a phone call to tell them when we will be arriving. In addition to the 21 free nights of camping (with full hook ups) they gave us just for listening to their spiel, we pay just $10/night at any of their resorts (which are private and not open to the public, that's how they keep the riffraff out, so said they) in the US, Canada and Mexico. Anyway, I think we'll enjoy it since we're retired and plan on making the most of our RV lifestyle. Thanks for the info, guys! You're the best and I appreciate you always giving great advice and telling us how it really is.

The one complaint I've heard about the Thousand Trail Parks that they are upgrading is that they are putting the sites closer together to get more sites in, sometimes dramatically. This was from someone who had been in their system for many years. I have a lifetime membership from Good Sams that I bought years ago but I basically only use it for the fuel discounts now.
@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Roy, We notice that it depends on the park. Some older parks are a pretty tight squeeze while some new ones have space. But we think it's because some of the older parks were designed for smaller rv's. Some parks are super close, like apartments. Others are spacious and give Sage plenty of room to play. They are all so different. And we have no idea what to expect until we get there. Guess that's part of the excitement. :) We might enjoy the Good Sams more if we used it for fuel.

Thank you for taking it easy on GOOD SAM's. I'm a LIFE MEMBER . Some will find some good in all these memberships and some won't. That's the reason there are so many of them. I've been a member for a very long time , and for that reason at the time being a LIFE MEMBER was to save money. Of the EMERGENCY ROADSIDE SERVICES CLUBS they tell you if you're in an emergency they will tow you. But when you do need them they don't tow the big CLASS A DIESEL PUSHERS. That goes for AAA. At the time I made my decision to go to GOOD SAMS , AAA didn't , don't know if they do now. I called around and then decided GSC. You have to watch these clubs and ask the right question up front. It goes for the CAMP GROUND MEMBERSHIPS , do your homework , as Mercedes and John have for us on these. But you still should do your homework for your situation. We are all not the same. Thanks again for another great video with lots of info . P. S. Did you guys stay at Carolina Landing in Fair Play, SC? I don't live far from there.

As a new RVer which would you choose Passport America or Thousand Trails? I will be starting out traveling to WV, Florida, Texas, Arizona, California, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, and everywhere in between to visit family and friends. Also looking for a new home base in the southern USA. Sorry to have bothered you but I’m trying to find the best bang for the buck, lol. Thank you very much for in advance, William Gallaher Safe travels to you and your family!!!

This is a good question. It depends but at minimum PA. If you can I would say both. If you're over 55, Thousand trails has a ton of Encore parks. You can stay in them even if you're younger you just have to get approval. You could always test Thousand Trails with Zone passes and then upgrade later if you like it. Then you're not paying thousands.

We're in the exact same boat -- Passport America, Thousand Trails (Ultimate Odyssey), PRI Gold. I'm not too big on the Good SAM membership -- at least, not as a discount system. Most parks that have 10% off for Good SAM also have the same amount off for AAA, Escapees, Military, etc., and many of the parks don't even check to see if you have a valid membership... so I get the feeling that they just jack the price up so it equals out when they give one of the 10% discounts. While Passport America is a good "in a pinch" membership, and you break even after your first or second visit... I will say it's a lot like playing a game, as each park has oddball restrictions on when you can and can't use it. A few parks have few restrictions... but most parks have restrictions such as, "Can only use PA discount Sunday-Thursday during off-season months when there isn't a holiday within a week of your stay with a max stay of 2 days and can only stay twice in a calendar year and must pay in cash." So, if you're traveling and decide to push your rig a little further and are actively investigating a place to stay, it might take you a while. It's not like you can just look at a map and know where you'll be staying -- you have to click on each park in an area you're going through and look at each and every individual restriction to figure out if it's even available. It can be a pain. I guess that's fine if you're planning in advance, but frustrating to do at the last minute. Again --- due to the low price, it's still worth it. As far as Coast to Coast... I was researching it to figure out if it was something we'd be interested in (that's how I came across this video)... and now I'm not so sure it would be a good fit for us. In the video you mentioned that things were changing in 2019 for some of the parks, with pricing no longer set to a certain amount (this would be a deal-breaker if this were true for all the parks). Were you referring to all the parks? or were you talking only about the parks that aren't really part of the Coast-to-Coast network (the 'good neighbor' parks) that has the per-park price?
@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
Hi David! It looks like we do have the same park membership set-up. We couldn't agree more that GS is not that great. PA is great, but you're right, the restrictions are tricky. We did a video on PA where we discuss the restrictions. Despite the fact that they are annoying, at least they are understandable. We appreciate that they keep them to a few lines and don't get all "legal" lol! So great question on coast to coast. We were discussing the blue, good neighbor parks. Our understanding is that the good neighbor parks used to be great, but now you have to call the parks directly and they can add on additional fees. And like we mentioned in the video, when we compared the park maps from 2014 to 2018, we were very disappointed! But if the red parks (the ones that are really a part of the c-2c system, are in areas that are convenient for you, it's something to consider. Let us know what you end up deciding and what motivates your decision.

I believe the reason COAST TO COAST is so high is to keep a lot of people out. The older RV's . Some parks won't let you in if your RV is over 10 years old. I was a member of COAST TO COAST in the 1990's . But it's just to costly for those of us who are retired and not working on the road.

@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
We think it's ok but we're not sure. It could depend on the park. With John being 20 years older than me and Sage being born on his 50th birthday, (same day, 4 hours later), we often joke about how 55+ resorts would welcome us. One in particular had tons of activities and camaraderie. Everyone looked so happy. And they all smiled when they saw Sage. I was very grateful because I was worried they'd want us out! 😂 -Mercedes

Thank you for sharing, great information. LOL OM Goodness, I absolutely fell out with the giggles at John's reaction to your daughter, at the end of the video. TOO FUNNY! John, just wait till her teen years, you will learn a totally different and amazing view of the world! I have a question, did you have an auction for your household items or did you use craigslist or garage sells? How in the world did you sell your household items? Not concern about my home selling, just all the furniture, and household items. This is the one thing my P brain is having a hard time figuring out. Any suggestions as to the WHAT you learned as you moved into the RV lifestyle? OH, and BTW, when you were in Fairplay, SC you were in my neck of the woods! GO CLEMSON TIGERS! 2nd CHP Champs within 3 years!

Great questions Dino! We did a mix of craigslist and garage sells. It was very tricky but eventually things got sold. We still have a few items in storage but overall people will buy for the right price. Learned a ton moving into this lifestyle but the biggest one is how precious time is and how unimportant possessions are. We will have to say Hi next time we are in SC. It is such a beautiful state. The trees are amazing! Having stayed in FL for 4 years we didn't get a good fall. We were in SC in the fall and it was such a delightful treat! Definitely a place we want to go back to!

I am considering buying the Thousand Trails. I would using it primarily in Florida. How much advance notice do you need to make reservations? I already have reservations in another park I was going to stay for two months straight next week. After learning about TT it makes better sense to buy the membership and stay two weeks at different resorts. So once you pay the membership you pay nothing to stay at their resorts?

Also, what's the diff between the "Basic" and the "Gold" RPI membership? (And which one do you get with the TT Elite Connections membership?)

@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
Hey SunVegan. How have you been? Great question but no. If you get an extended TT Pass, you can get an elite membership or the ultimate odyssey. Sometimes they will throw in a year of RPI in the extended TT memberships. Otherwise RPI is it's own program. Encore parks are owned by the same company as tt and for $214 you can get an Encore pass. (whether you have a camping pass or and extended tt membership, you can get Encore "trails collection" for $214). Coast to coast is a whole different deal but they work with some TT and encore parks in their good neighbor program and you get discounted rates. Hope that helps. It's about as clear as mud! lol

So we want to go to Florida for the winter months in 2020. I have been looking at Thousand Trails, but with basic membership + Trails Collection, and only 60 days ahead reservation allowed, I'm afraid we would pay for the membership and NOT be able to get a reservation during the busy winter months! I've heard you can't see what places have any spots, UNTIL you buy a membership, and then still wait til 60 days out. What are your thoughts on this?
@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sharon, While I haven't heard that you can't see availability until you purchase a membership I agree you have a great point. High season sometimes has to be scheduled in advance. We're struggling with this too. We were able to stay anywhere we wanted in FL in the summer and fall but have no idea what the winter will be like. You may want to call the actual parks you're interested in and inquire as to their cost and if there is a discount for weekly, monthly rates. Let us know how it goes. :-)

@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
Great question. It depends. This is a tricky question because there is so much to consider, but here are a few things to consider. 1. Are you Full Time? No- maybe get the zone pass if the parks in that zone correspond with your travels. Yes- highly recommend the zone pass and test it out. But the more you camp the more you save, so you have to use it. It's not worth it if use it less than 20 nights. 2. Going F/T for a while (more than one year): consider the upgraded memberships. 3. Are you an rv park person or a boondocker? If you're new to the lifestyle, Rv parks are nice because you still have hook-ups. They help you ween off the sticks and bricks. If you have experience RVing or enjoy boonocking, then this membership doesn't make as much sense. 4. Are you traveling with kids? Yes- you probably need hookups, I would recommend the zone pass. No, you can probably "rough it more". In the end, it depends on how often you use it. Again, you have to use this pass a lot to make it worthwhile. TT isn't like PA that's a no-brainer. If you want to know more about elite memberships we have a super in depth video on it. Let us know what you end up doing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHeylZqEfs2ai7s

Hello I have a question for you. I realize that the answer my very based on ones desires and needs. However, based on the 6 month mark that you amazing folks are at what you GUESS it would cost on average based on your travels it would cost per year to be a full time RVer. This has been a dream of mine to do with my wife and 3 small children and a dog. My kids ages range from 15 months to 5 years old. I had dreamed of moving back to Alaska but after watching so many blogs on this life style feel like this is where we would get the most out of. Live should be about adventure and it’s time we live ours. We are in the planning phase and still trying to decide which would be best, an actual motor home or a fifth wheel because I’d like to take a vehicle and my Harley. Any advice on the planning phase?

What was your favorite TT Park in Florida that you mentioned? We stayed at Royal Coachman recently and really loved it.

Royal Coachman. It's immaculate but nicely forested. We've also fallen in love with Verde Valley AZ and Rancho Oso CA

Are you still happy with TT? Which TT membership do you have? do you ever experience not being able to get in to a park that is full? How much advance reservation do you typically need with TT. we're considering getting one.

The only issue I see with Thousand Trails nothing is in central or north west.... So wondering if they are going to work on getting central US and north west. Because I have not found one club but KOA
@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
Agree! We wish they had more in the center of the country. If you plan on doing most of your traveling in the center of the US, TT may not be ideal for you. We don't know much about KOA but hear good things about them! :-)

@@clumsyzombie4932 We just purchased our first Travel Trailer and we bought from Fun Town RV. Not sure if there is one near where you live but we highly recommend them. No high pressure, no hidden cost, and we checked all over the country to try and find a lower price and they were the lowest by far. Our salesman was very helpful by answering all of our questions honestly and he was very knowledgeable about RVing. We have our first camp out (shake down cruise) coming up in are new RV in just a couple of weeks. This summer we are headed off to the east coast for two months of RVing.

The age limit of 55, do both of us need to be 55? I ask because Bob is 65, and I'm his "sugar baby" ( lmao) I'm ""only" 52..53 in September. Would this fly, or would we be told good bye? Another great and informative video you two...thank you! We have the coast to coast and Sam's also, because we didn't see your other video until it was too oooo late! Yup, Camping World saw us 1st timers coming to.

Is this the link for Resort Parks International - www.resortparks.com/learnmore.php? Also do you know how you go about getting this membership without purchasing a Thousand Trails Camping Pass? Checking the site I referenced it states "Membership in RPI can only be purchased through our affiliated RV resorts." but when I checked the web sites for several of the parks I didn't find details on purchasing an RPI membership. Also on their main page (www.resortparks.com/index.php) they state "Camp for only $10 a night at affiliated membership RV campgrounds" which is quite inexpensive but maybe there are stay limits such as Sun-Thur/2 Day Max. You mentioned there was a 14 day limit and I'm guessing that is per location but not for sure.
@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
You have the right website. But we don't have experience getting RPI alone so we can't guide you. When we used RPI we only paid $10/night plus an add on for 50AMP. $5/night 15$ total per night. Not sure how long you have to wait before going back to the same park or using RPI again. We don't believe that RPI has the weekend restrictions like Passport America but we're not sure. You may want to ask our friends at TT Jim and Brandy. They know a lot more about these memberships than we do. We pinned their contact info in the comments & in the description. Let us know what you find out! Sorry we couldn't be more helpful.
