The person/s that you encountered used the rocks to see if they got a reaction from the interior to indicate occupation. They've done this before. One cheap method to use especially if you're isolated is to purchase 4 driveway alarms sold at Harbor Freight that run off a batteries. You set the sensors outside around 4' in height on each side of the RV. The alarms are just alert box's that can be set on quiet or loud. The are all wireless and cost around $15 each. They have a wide field of view and will pick up movement at quite a distance. I used them to protect a warehouse area in Baltimore and they never failed. The sensors are weatherproof. You just have to change the batteries occasionly. At 4' of height you eliminate any wildlife setting them off. You can mount them using Velcro type fasteners and take them off while driving or just mount them permanently. At the warehouse I would be sleeping and the field of vision would be compromised and the sensors would wake me up so I could monitor the video cameras. Having those sensors allowed me to literally chase off prostitutes, burglars, drug addicts and others with ill intent. I used them for five years there and still use them on my personal property facing inwards from the property line to only go off if they are on the property and not walking by on a public street. The nice thing is that the all run off the same frequencies so you dont need multiple alarms, just the sensors even though each box gives you the complete set-up. No programming. Just put in batteries and turn on.

You just gave the best suggestion I've heard in a decade for living isolated rurally, as a single older woman, while on a fixed income. I've given up manicures, salons, and buy tools and honor my parents who left me this place. It's a lot of work and takes investing everything I have, to maintain and repair, besides what my grandbabies need, of course :) and I have had to deal with trespass and material losses, etc, and so many suggestions are out of my reach or just ineffective. The wildlife, mostly my kitties, took up my game camera footage when using it by my house. Surrounded by woods, these items from Harbor Freight sound doable, thank you very much!

I'm a former Police Officer....your tactics are correct WHEN at home, but when in an RV, I wouldn't let them know you have a weapon, if they have a weapon, they'll start shooting through your RV's (thin) walls and you won't know where they are to return fire. There is a CCW app, it gives you all the current info. John, it's a MAGAZINE! 😉 GOD Bless You Both! 🙏🙏🙏

Mercedes and John, Gotta say, my wife and I love your channel! You always present interesting and useful information and we thank you for all you do to help everyone else out there. Now about this terrifying experience...you are very smart to have a plan that you both know well. Many other folks gave you lots of good comments about lighting, not giving away things about where you are, starting your truck or activating its alarm and on and on. However, as a retired police officer, I must say that your idea of going downstairs to the main level was not one that is tactically sound for several reasons: 1. Whoever may be outside most likely can hear or see or feel you moving around inside. Moving around before the offender gets in can give away your location. (However, moving once a gunfight starts is one of the best ways to stay alive.) They also could have seen you looking out the window and shot you before you even saw them or could engage them. 2. As someone already said, they can easily shoot THROUGH the walls of the RV and they could hit you more easily than if you were still up in the bedroom where they can't look in and see you and where there may be more walls/floors/cabinets/clothing etc (cover) between you and them. Concealment is just that, it is NOT necessarily cover. Especially in an RV. To be the safest, you need BOTH concealment AND cover and hoefully the element of surprise. 3. When you went downstairs you closed the distance between you and the offender(s) and in fact, intended to fight with him, or quite possibly THEM, if entry was gained, when it is safer to put distance and items of cover and concealment in between you and to give yourself whatever tactical advantage you can. (Contrary to popular myths perpetrated by video games, television and movies, handguns are the least effective firearms for self defense, having the worst stopping power when compared with rifles and shotguns. People do NOT usually drop like a bag of rocks when hit with handgun fire, even multiple shots!!!! I recall an incident where an offender was hit 33 times by 9mm rounds from the police before he stopped shooting back and otherwise resisting.) Fortunately, the offender(s) did not make entry, because by going downstairs you gave up a great deal of your tactical advantage. Up in the bedroom you had the high ground, cover and concealment and the offenders would have to come up a narrow stairway one at a time, putting them right in your sights...a gauntlet, if you will. In this case John, I would have done a few things to give me the best advantage. First I would make sure the family had cover and concealment as far away from the front door as possible (and in the bedroom), and that Sage or Mercedes covered Sage's ears. (Little ones' ears are particularly suseptable to permanent damage from loud noises like gunfire.) Then I would send Skippy downstairs to bark and hopefully deter any attempt to enter. Then I would have have created a barricade of sorts by quietly throwing anything I could (clothes, toys, pillows, etc.) on the stairs to hinder the offenders' advance up. Then, if I had the ability to do so from the bedroom, I would have turned lights on down in the main living area to possibly startle and deter the offenders, but mostly to ruin their night vision so that they couldn't see into the bedroom well as they tried to climb the stairs and enter the bedroom. Then, leaving the bedroom door open, I would have taken a position of concealment and cover as far back in the dark bedroom as I could, while maintaining my view and field of fire of the front door and the stairway up to the bedroom and waited quietly. Only if the offender(s) actually tried to gain entry, would I have announced that I was armed and would fire if necessary. If they did get in, I could fired from my position of cover in the bedroom as they came through the front door. If they made it past the doorway, the offenders would have to stumble their way up the blocked, narrow stairway single file with no cover or concealment, looking into the darkness of the bedroom. I could then fire at the first one coming up the stairs and then the second, and so on. Hopefully, well placed shots would have the desired effect and each offender would become another obstacle for those behind him, giving me the time and opportunity to place shots into those who followed. Or preferably, after the first guy went down, any addition offenders would turn tail and run. But you can't count on that. Would love to camp with you guys sometime. God bless you! Bob P.S. The USCCA self defense insurance is also a great idea.

Glad you all are safe and congratulations on taking responsibility for your safety, that's something many refuse to do. As a prior law enforcement officer and military veteran, I feel confident that I can protect myself and my wife. As I get older I realize a firearm is more important as I become physically weaker. You should always assume an intruder is armed, larger and experienced in grappling and striking skills. Never voluntarily give up a position of superiority to grapple. Create a PACE plan for everything. Primary, alternate contingency, emergency. You should assume there are multiple people that may be waiting to assist the intruder. Never expose your back to an unknown threat. Stay safe and God bless.

My wife and I are planning on getting into RV living in the next five years, we’ve been putting together a strategy on doing this and thanks to y’all we’ve gotten a great list started and you’ve helped us jump start our plans in the right direction. Keep up the great work and I pray that GOD keeps your family safe( that includes the birds nest..LOL).

My wife and I are retired in Florida and are just acquiring information about the RV lifestyle. We've watched a few of your introductory videos, thinking of renting first. This is the 4th video we've viewed and I think the most valuable. Thank you so much for sharing this. It can't be easy relating something unsettling like this event, but this is truly something that no novice like ourselves would probably be prepared for. RVing can be fun, your general knowledge is great to have, but this video could be life saving! Thanks again, you two are fantastic for all you do, a BIG thumbs up!

My husband and I had a scary incident at, of all places, a County-run campground in upstate New York. We mistakenly thought that a campground owned, run, and maintained by a NY State County, would somehow be safer, but we were wrong. These campgrounds tend to not have limits on the # of campers per site, so many attract larger, extended families and their friends who bring tents to put up on the RV'ers sites. We found a large # of heavy "partiers" also tend to flock to these sites, simply bc there are no limits per site. They even were allowing pig roasts, involving multiple families, kegs of beer, and also hard liquor, which would be fine if the alcohol was limited, but strangley it was not. So, here is our story: after a pig roast, where the alcohol and drugs were flowing freely, plus loud, blasting country rock music through a speaker system for 7-8 hrs straight, it seemed to wrap up around 2 AM or so. Finally, we were both able to sleep. 4:15 AM, we were awakened by a man screaming loudly right outside our trailer, " Come on out, I know you stole my money, I'm gonna f--k you up!" I heard it first, woke my husband up, and looked out of our windows, where I saw an obviously very drunk guy, brandishing a Very large hunting knife. He appeared to be in a state of partial undress, barely able to stand and kept screaming we, or someone, stole his money, when we never saw him before. We were first time RVers, not that far from a fairly large town in upstate NY, yet had no phone service, not even 911. He went to our door, started banging on it. My husband chose not to answer it, bc we were unarmed seniors, figuring the guy was so drunk, he'd probably go away at some point, and pass out. He did not. He instead proceeded to start carving up our brand new RV with the knife, screaming, " I'll show you, you M-F'ers!". At this point, we heard noises and other voices from other campers who appeared to know this guy, and another man( later we found out it was a relative, his uncle) came to our rescue by calming him down, and led him away from our RV with assistance of other men. The next day, we finally went outside to see the extent of the damage, which was pretty bad. At that point, a woman came over to see us, explained that the man in question was her nephew, who " drank too much moonshine and did some reefer we think was spiked". He apparently came for the pig roast, and well, you know, "stuff happens". All she was focused on was us not pressing charges " cause he has a record". We instead went straight to the front office, showed them the damage, told them what occurred, and demanded the rest of our seasonal fee back bc we informed them, we were leaving NOW. We only stay now in private sites where the # of campers are limited, are family oriented, do not allow large, unmonitored gatherings, loud music, or public drunkeness. We also complained to the Dept of Parks for the State of N Y. Be careful out there, guys. Oh, BTW, we're armed now! 🏕

@@007nadineL We really just wanted out of there, ASAP, and with our refund. We never went back to that county again. If we had gone to court, him and his family would have then known our full names, addresses from court docs, etc, just not worth it, especially at our age. Seniors are particularly vulnerable in these situations, which is why we shared this story. We got compensated from our insurance company, damage repaired. But definetly learned alot from this, & alot wiser now. 🏕

As a retired law enforcement officer, I used to speak to groups on safety and security. One thing I always told people is not to overlook the alarm system they already have - the key fob for your vehicle. If you're towing a car, keep the fob close by and press the panic button if you are in a situation as described. The noise may very well scare off the intruder and get the attention of other people nearby.

I always just take the ladder off my RVs. Then I park next to a wall and stand on it if I need to work on the roof or jump up top. You never know when kids might climb up there and start jumping on your roof🤷‍♂️, so better safe than sorry. As far as I'm concerned I never go back up there after I seal the roof. No need for roof storage if you don't own too much junk either. Also the rails and ladder cost in gas mileage. You'll notice less wind drag after removing them.

I’m 52 years old & I can tell y’all from experience that besides the lack of God in our culture, the one other major missing component that makes people think they can do whatever they want like this is a lack of accountability & lack of follow through of enforcing rules in the home & laws out in public. People learn from experience & whenever a person gets their tail handed to them for being lawless or inconsiderate it serves as a deterrent for all future conduct. I’m really glad y’all are okay. From your plan I took away a couple tips... 1. Barricading the door 2. Practice familiarity with emergency exits 3. Keeping car keys in arm’s reach when I sleep There are other great tips here in your vid but I’ve already implemented them & they’ll serve to inform others well. Kudos guys for the information upload & keep doing what your doing. Your a great blessing to the online community & I’m sure a blessing to others as well. Godspeed!

Incarceration as a deterrent is a failed system! Just look at the 80%+ recidivism rate over a 3 year period upon release from prison. We need to bring the death penalty back for lesser crimes like manslaughter, rape, severe bodily injury during an assault & auto theft. We used to hang cattle and horse thieves once upon a time in America!

Those are my faves.🥰 I am so glad you guys are ok. Mercedes, I applaud you for having something with which to defend your baby girl. When people found out we have firearms they used to say to me, "I don't have guns because I have CHILDREN!" I would answer back, " I have guns BECAUSE I have children." Being a flight engineer, my hubby was gone for months and months at a time over the past 23 years. I was left to defend our home, and you better believe I am a momma bear and will not hesitate to defend my girls. We have given our girls firearm safety training, and my eldest was made to read/memorize most of the Marine Corps Firearm Safety manual hubby was given at Parris Island, (she is 22 and ready for her own weapon as she will be living on her own and going to college in TN). Never tell anyone you have a weapon. If they are legit threat, then you just gave your hand away. The element of surprise is key in a conceal carry pull. Also, "cocking your gun" does nothing to scare an intruder. If someone knows you are there, they are likely on drugs and willing to do what it takes to get what they want. Know your state law, and if you feel an imminent threat handle your business.

I keep getting reminded why I moved out of California... So glad so many other states have taken on the Constitutional carry mindset!! Glad you were both armed in this situation though. An extra step you might want to consider in situations like this is to start recording with your cell phone, or set up a laptop, tablet, whatever you have handy to record as much of the interior as possible, and at the very least record for sound so that if you are forced to open fire you have it all on record to prove that you had just cause to be in fear of your life if it has to go to court later. An exterior security camera setup can also be massively helpful not only for recording but to give you a view of what is going on out there without exposing yourself to any threats and barring that don't forget your backup dash camera if your rig has one. It truly sucks that today's society has taken internet trolling offline and it's not even uncommon anymore for idiots to screw with strangers in situations like this just for their own twisted sadistic entertainment.

This video brought back to mind a situation that happened to me and my wife. One night, she woke me up from a very deep sleep saying she thought she heard someone in the house. Now, although I live in California, I have a few loaded weapons in my home for the "what ifs". So I reached for my .357 and flashlight and got up and headed slowly out the bedroom. Keep in mind, I have had weapons training in the past from the Sheriffs department as I was trying to become a deputy many years ago so I am comfortable with a weapon. I went through all the rooms on the house only to find out that what she heard was a suction cup grab bar lost it's suction and fell in the shower. What actually scared me was the fact that I was so groggy, I don't think I would have handled the situation very well if there was an intruder. Thank God there wasn't. My wife and I belong to a weapons training facility outside of Las Vegas. They actually have a training session for those night time situations. I am going to go through that one for sure.

Former law enforcement and gun owner here. I have been in several situations (off duty) when taking the time to call 911 just isn't feasible or possible. Most people don't understand that a gun (or any weapon) can escalate a situation just as easily as it can de-escalate it (not directing this at you, but it's just a general statement). As gun owners, we have to be prepared for that escalated situation. Plan for the worst-case scenario and hope for a best-case scenario. My personal view: someone needs to start a video recording because, even if you aren't getting a good video, you ARE getting an ongoing audio log that will record you *repeatedly* giving out warnings to the intruder. That's going to help you more than anything if you end up in court. Anytime you draw a weapon (firearm, knife, whatever), you need to realize that there's a chance that you'll end up in court and you need to make sure that you can defend every single one of your actions. It only adds more stress to the situation for the victims but that's the truth of it. You not only have to worry about defending yourself, your family, and your home from the intruder but you'll also have to defend yourself against opposing counsel in court. Both can be equally as difficult.

It's Dave in Raleigh again. Glad you're OK. As I mentioned in an earlier comment I've been full time for eight years now. I'm in an old Bounder and four years of my RV experience has been in a huge theatre parking lot beside a rail siding. The mainline is about one hundred yards up the track and the area is rife with homeless people, all of whom are desperate for something or anything you may have that can be eaten, converted into money or gotten high or drunk on. I have no I'll will towards these people, and in fact I've fed many of them over the years and even put a few up in dire circumstances, but make no mistake about it, I'm very careful and try not to put myself in a dangerous situation that I can't get out of. I don't keep a firearm in the motor home, but that doesn't mean that I don't have weapons. Like you, I have a dog, Bella, a pit bull with attitude who is extremely protective and totally fearless and in a bind she'd be my first line of defense, but there are other things that, if utilized properly could be as effective as a pistol. One thing that works well is bear spray. It can be obtained at REI or any good outfitters for under fifty dollars. You ask me if it works? Go to Yellowstone and find a bear that doesn't bolt at the mere sight of a can of the stuff and I'll kiss your tush on main street! One good thing about the bear spray is it has a range of about thirty feet or more and it turns into a fog or a cloud, so the need for extreme accuracy isn't as great as it is with a gun. With a pistol one sixteenth of an inch variance at the end of the barrel translates to failure to hit at any distance at all and the misses become greater the greater the distance is. The bear spray cloud is probably more effective, especially if you get awakened in the middle of the night. There is no careful aim, just point and shoot! Also, tools make formidable weapons and, as far as I know they're legal in all states. I keep a couple of cross pein and engineer's hammers in various places. They're effective, or Vikings wouldn't have carried them into battle. Leaving a chef's knife on the cutting board or in the sink can give you an edge (no punn intended!), as well. As for the question of your RV being a true domicile, the Federal Government thinks so. Social Security Administration ruled that a disability recipient can have a house and a car, or an RV and a car. Federal law will trump state law every time, especially near the end of the appeals process. One word of caution though, it's one thing to beat the wheels off an intruder outside your domicile, but you don't want to shoot one out there. An assault can be dealt with. A murder charge is a different matter. The trick is to not be in a situation where this sort of thing is likely to happen. Do as I say, not as I do ... don't give out your location! I'm glad you're okay! This'll be a wild tale for the grandkids later. I put you on the prayer list, too, just so you know. Be careful but have fun!

Funny story: Our chocolate lab , Rufus, would always sleep at the foot of our bed which was by the main entry door. Every night about 11PM the loud alarm would go off for the propane leaking. This would wake us up in a panic; but there was no leak. We finally figured out that it was the dog farting with his butt next to the sensor!
