My house can turn into a pig sty. Since setting a 5 minute timer and doing tasks like clean the kitchen counter, hoover the upstairs carpet, clean the bathroom. After 5 minutes I stop even if it's not totally done. I go have a chill and then go back to it later. It's totally changed my home. Good luck

I am also messy and live alone. My mother was tyrannical and the house was never messy...not tolerated and when I was a teen, I was left with 2 much younger siblings and a list of chores that would choke a horse...vacuuming a 2 story, 4 bedroom, 2-1/2 bathroom house and defrosting an old 1950s refrigerator. It was exhausting and I'd be babysitting sometimes all weekend. I still lived home but was going to move to a diffcity with a friend...the city of choice was hers and when we got there (2000 miles away) she decided she wanted to go back to our state of origin. I wasn't going to stay on my own and went along with her decision. I arrived home after less than a week. I was told I wasn't welcomed and wouldn't be staying. I ended up in a much better situation in the end for the next 4 yrs. After which I went on a vacation and met someone and got married. He unfortunately died and my parents showed up and wanted me to move back to the east coast. I said o and that I was going to move to LA and find a job and a place to live. I did with some help from my father and have lived in LA for about 50 yrs...best decision ever. I am now contemplating a move to So. Carolina where my brother had a house and has offered me the use of it.

I love your statement that your house didn't get cluttered in a day, and it won't get completely decluttered in one day. This is on par with my saying to new moms who are worrying about getting their pre-baby figure back: it took nine months for your body to change and bring a baby into this world, so give yourself nine months to "re-set".
@Malena20222 жыл бұрын
Side note: You might never go back to the body you had, because you had a baby and went through an enormous change. But it’s definitely good to know it might take a long time if you ever do. The baby and the great accomplishment is the reward❤

I have chronic pain and issues too which adds to the challenge but stuff needs doing. Just do what you can. There's one thing I do and that is not to leave the room empty handed. There's always something in the room that needs to be taken to another room to its regular spot. So I look around first before leaving the room to see what I need to take with me. We usually have a fairly tidy house. But one thing that I think helps is that when things start to get out of hand, I do 'ten minutes' or 'ten things'... so if I have time, I do ten minutes in the kitchen, ten minutes in the living room, or whatever. Or, I say "put away ten things in the office". It's something my mother used to say, because ten minutes or ten things are EASY to do. You don't feel stressed. Then at the end, it really does make things better. Sometimes I pretend someone is on their way over, and the doorbell is about to ring. That gets me moving!

In my case, the major things that have helped me in my decluttering journey and cleaning is everything must have a home. Decluttering, organizing and trying to make sure I get tasks done right away (laundry, dishes, etc) makes a big difference.
@TerryProthero2 жыл бұрын
I haven't got the last part of that mastered yet. The laundry basket sitting in my living room and the dishes in my sink are evidence of it. But that first part has made a huge difference for me. My house gets a little cluttered at times, but it's never going to get severely cluttered. Even on the worst day, my place can be put back together in an hour or two. And that's me working about half normal pace because of my autism and attention deficit. Although, I do have a cleaning person who does a more deep cleaning of my bathroom, kitchen, etc. about once a month to make things a little easier for me. And with me living here by myself, things don't get very dirty. So, I mostly just need to do the dishes and do a little decluttering from time to time.

Yes, everything has a home is great. Just putting an item back is so much less mentally taxing than having to think where it should go. I also love moving items to where I first looked for them if I couldn't find them straight away And getting rid of excess that make it more convenient to procrastinate. I used to have a dozen towels for a household of 2, which just ment I avoided washing my towels, had to store a pile of dirty towels, and had to mentally plan for two full loads of just towels.

It is so important to have a place for everything. Since donating a lot of things during my last move, it is so easy to keep things neat. Now I follow the rules that if I bring something new in , I need to have a place for it and I get rid of something. That also reduces how many new things I buy if I don't have anyplace to put it and can't think of anything to give away.

I love my house and I deserve to come home to a house that is clean and calm. I have to tell myself, “No one is coming to do this and if you didn’t have your family you would still be the only one there to do it…” it suck but I am getting peace from leaving the clutter behind. It’s been a huge boost to my mental health and it really does save some much time when there is a home for things. I still have a long way to go but have made big steps and seeing some awesome results.

It can be super hard to keep the house tidy... My house was a mess before the weekend just because I stopped doing my 10 minute chores on a daily basis. It must have taken me about 10 hours over the weekend to get it 'back to normal' and I'm still getting through the laundry! I have to say, I'm not usually too bad but last week I just lost all motivation and I think it's important to remember that that's fine.. we can't all be perfect all the time. I do agree with her though, I always try to put everything in the dishwasher and wipe the sides down before bed and unload the dishwasher in the morning whilst my cuppas brewing. That way, anything used throughout the day goes straight in and it makes it all feel a little more manageable :)
@Caliabra2 жыл бұрын
At first I thought this was going to be secret hacks and i am really happy to see it wasn’t because there is no magic cure. Being tidy is a whole mind set change and it takes a lot of discipline and continuous hard work. I agree with everything in here especially do the 5 min of work now instead of letting it build..yup. I would add that having organization systems that set you up for success is also important but that is also a part of simplifying space. Having moved has been a blessing because it has allowed me and my husband to purge stuff that builds up over time and forced that “get rid of extra stuff” thing very quickly

These are the only tips that have actually helped me. I loved this video. One other tip that may help some people: home decor matters. I used to not really decorate for the holidays or care about home decor any other time of the year either (broke for a while so couldn’t afford the nice home decor like I would always see in magazines and stuff). But since I’ve started trying to spice my house up decor-wise (minimalist decor style, in my case) I’ve noticed it’s easier for me to put in the effort to pick up clutter because I know that once I pick up the clutter and tidy up even a little bit, my house is going to look GOOD (versus tidy but empty and lifeless). Won’t apply to everyone, but might help someone 😊

I tell people to wipe down their refrigerator and microwave every other day when they're cleaning kitchen. I always fold laundry the same day I wash clothes! Vacuuming is very calming if you think about it. Every season, clean out your closets and give to charity 😊

So good about “the actually being home” to manage your home! Sometimes I feel like I’m not getting out enough but I’m totally satisfied with being home, especially with my kids being so young! Thank you for putting that into word!♥️

I find that going out, even if it's just wandering around Walmart or something, is often a coping mechanism for me so that I'm not looking at my mess and clutter. I can temporarily forget it when I'm not home, but then I get home and feel stressed, embarrassed, and depressed, and the cycle continues.

I am a stay at home mom and am always struggling with comparing myself to working parents - how do they get it all done?! I recently had this realization that not only am I home all day with my 2 small children, but my husband also works from home. This means that all 4 of us are home, making messes that I then need to clean up for the 8+ hours that a traditional family with two working parents is away from the home for. *Not saying that either job is easier/harder. Just a friendly reminder, like Kallie is highlighting, that sometimes our homes are messy because we live in them!

The people that work all day relegate the raising of their child to someone else. Although it is often viewed as the societal norm, count your blessings if you can recognize how truly precious those days are.

Working from home, I felt like I was _constantly_ replacing toilet paper rolls & lightbulbs and refilling soap pumps. I needed to clean the bathroom more often and the dishwasher filled up faster! The dust bunnies multiplied faster. In an office, all these things are taken care of by someone else (except the dishes).

I have always been a do it all or nothing person, taking one while day. My mother once told me that it is too overwhelming to do it that way, and it is easier to do at least one thing a day. This is one thing I heard you say also, by taking15 minutes to do a task. This was very helpful for me. I like the clearing of flat surfaces also! I always feel better when they are decluttered! Thank you. I subscribed.

Absolutely love love love this video - thank you so much 🙏 I have been in a horrible rut with my home & stuff & you have truly inspired me to take small steps of 15 minutes each time, clear flat surfaces etc. Instead of being overwhelmed & it getting worse - I now feel like I can achieve a tidier home each day. Keep up the great videos!💗

Yes! I’m in the same boat! It feels nice to hear that discipline or uncluttered, tidy homes are a learned behavior. I used to feel like something was wrong with me, or that I was a failure. I’m trying to declutter one thing every day and tidying up better every day.

She needs to be my therapist! Clutter is my biggest issue. I can have any room looking really good…For awhile. Then one thing gets laid somewhere, then another and another. Exactly what she says about NOT doing that 15 min thing for a few days. I❤ this girl! Such a deep thinker too.

You nailed my internal argument about staying home to clean versus going out and doing something fun! Either way I usually feel guilty, which what is the point of that?! Staying home even for part of a day to get my home in order definitely pays off later on.

yes! That was actually very helpful. We went for a drive to a new coffee shop yesterday because my sister bought a new car and decided to quit the famous expensive coffee shop you all know... and have a love/hate relationship with! I love this plan SO MUCH! I don't want to just chug an expensive coffee. I love making it an adventure!

Hi Kallie, I love watching your videos, which help me to feel more in control of my mess, because I'm not the only one. A couple of months ago my boyfriend bought a robot hoover - I was away at a course for a few days and came home to find "Lucy" in the house. I always thought that 2 adults in a normal sized house should be able to manage the cleaning between us, but it ends up usually being me, and I work full time and study part time as well, so the house is usually a bit of a mess. Anyway, Lucy has been a game changer. She can run round downstairs while I walk the dog, and I come home to a clean living room floor, which makes me feel happy and less stressed! Don't get me wrong, if someone announced that they were coming over in 30 minutes, I'd still have to run round like a crazy person tidying, but I wouldn't have to get the dyson out.

I love your ideas. I start to empty the dishwasher during my morning coffee time. While it is brewing I take out the silverware crate and put that away. I hate sorting that. Then when I take out my empty coffee cup to the kitchen I will put away the bottom rack then my next trip to the kitchen I do the top rack. I always have the sink empty before I go to bed because I think about the city sewage system and I do not want bugs. lol. A big problem I have is that I am a new widow, sorting thru his things donating his clothes was not so bad I donated most to the yellow box dumpster (their stuff goes overseas) and that was so I don't see another man wearing them when I go out. His extra favorite Aloha shirts tho I am keeping them in the attic. My Mom taught me a trick years ago. Every day she would clean one shelf in the fridge and none on Sundays, so she never had to dread that job. Thank you for making this video. I needed some tips.

Focusing on one thing that gets done every day, regardless of how busy I get is really useful advice. I'm a working single parent and I'm also studying at college (mature student) so life is really busy. When I'm home and not working, studying or looking after my child, I waste so much time thinking about which thing to do first around the house. That's time I could actually spend doing things that need doing, but I'm like a deer caught in headlights and just freeze. Eventually, I decide on a task to start on, but I'd have more time to do if I knew what I was doing straight away. The tip about surfaces and 15 minute declutter is really handy too. I tend to wait until I'm in the mood and have time, then do a massive, epic declutter, but that's not effective in the long run. Small amounts of time here and there seems like the way to go. My mum was a stay at home mum, and we were out at school all day, 5 days a week, so she had all that time to tidy and clean and a partner who took care of all of the bills, the recycling, garden and diy jobs etc. I always compare how my house is with how my childhood home was and feel like I'm failing. I can't spend 6 hours straight a day cleaning and tidying. 10 minutes here, 5 minutes there is more manageable. It all mounts up in the end. Thank you for this advice. I'm sure it will help me so much.

So glad you posted this today. I’m doing a painting project, all the living room furniture except the couch is in the den. Living in a house that’s not as organized as usual. Now figuring I have no reason to not maintain order and do a house blessing (cleaning) & decluttering today. Already put a load of laundry in this morning (easier doing more frequently than what I used to do - which was wait until I had 4 loads piled up). Put a meal in the crock pot then got the painting done. Much easier starting with an already organized house. A friend came out for a week to help me out getting unpacked & organized. Please, ask family and friends for help when you feel buried under your stuff. And offer to help them. The bigger projects are a lot more fun & quicker when done together. And I’m experiencing so much more pleasure living in my home. Thanks for all the good ideas.

Thank you so much for this! I keep a pretty tidy home and love your videos for continued inspiration and hacks! The comment about how most things only take 5 - 10 minutes is so accurate. I've been staring at my utensil organizers for two weeks now because they had crumbs and were a mess. It took about 6 minutes this weekend to empty the organizers, wipe them down thoroughly and rearrange them. Kicking myself for not doing that two weeks ago!

Thank you. Your videos have helped me to get motivated to organize and keep clean my spaces. The attitude of the "future me will thank me" thing has helped me so much. Plus the whole bit at a time thing really helps. I started that in my kitchen and now have gone through every drawer and cabinet!

I really love this, thank you so much. One thing I wish had been said regarding always being out and going and NOT being home is that, when you ARE (finally) home, you don't have the energy or mental capacity to then tackle the tasks of maintaining the home. You'd think NOT being home = home not getting messy, but that's really not true. Relating to the "stuff always coming in"...that stuff comes in whether you are home or not.

The staying home part 👌 I’ve actually had to try to explain that to women in my own generation/stage of life, that I need to stay home because I value whatever it is I need to do/catch up on, and that’s why I have to turn down whatever invite is being presented. I also realize that I have a much lower clutter threshold then other women, with two toddlers, I really get overwhelmed when our house is cluttered and I am by no means a minimalist but I am intentional about what stays.

I time a few tasks a long time ago. Clear clothes off the chair- 5 minutes vs the days of avoiding it. Make my bed- 3 minutes in the morning vs at night when it’s now covered in laundry too. Run cross wave (vac/mop) in 15 minutes to keep up with pet hair etc vs panicking when guests are coming. Clean one drawer and feel success vs try to do the whole dresser and feel like I failed. Just a few tips from a 53 yr homemaker with 3 grown kids & a career.

I'm going to be starting a new job next week, which is going to be drastically different for me, from the schedule I'll be working to less time off. I've watched about 4 videos from you and this advice is just awsome! I can see myself following your tips because they seem extremely doable, simple, not drastic. Any way, I'm so glad I found this channel. Thankyou so much for great advice!

Thanks! It's amazing how fast clutter can catch up. I certainly feel so much better when I know where something belongs and I put it away. Folding laundry was always a chore until I decided it would get folded as it comes out of the dryer. Then it never takes more than 10 minutes and it doesn't pile up.

The concept makes perfect sense. implementation is not quite so easy. My experience is to start with 5 mins and then build. Once we see how easy the 5 was and how happy we are when we wake to a semi done kitchen, we are more willing to go further. At least, it did for me. Great videos!!!

You are absolutely right about it all! 🤩😍🤩! I purchased the silicone chair scuff protectors. I was so sick of the felt adhesive ones finding their way off and around my house and stuck to my Australian Shepherd 😂. As soon as I ordered them,I put together cleaning items for the task. Bucket, floor cleaner,wood cleaner for the chairs, scratch repair, etc. As soon as they arrived,I was excited and ready to go! Now that it's done,a week later, I am still thrilled 🤩😍🤩💖💖🎉! They work wonderfully and my kitchen set looks brand new. Thank youuuuuu! I love your videos 🤩🤩🤩🤩💖💖💖💖
