Many of the cold hardy seeds you mentioned can be successfully winter sown in milk jugs & left outside. No shelving, benches, growlights , heat mats etc... No damping-off disease or hardening-off issues either.

Do you think all listed would make it in this jug sowing. I really want to try it.
@flatsville13 жыл бұрын
@@callyscraftycorner2463 Yeah. Cold hardy are the best to winter sow. I've given up indoor seedling starts with the exception of warm weather crops. I do some late winter sowing of them for the helluva it. Some years it works just fine if I don't jump the gun too early. Then I have extras for trade or sale. One year I had a cut-down, butchered-up IBC tote which I used as the ultimate mega "milk jug." That was crazy productive.

I will be keeping my onions inside though just to baby em 😄 Winter sowing is great-from milk jugs to seed flats and low tunnels, just gotta find what works for your garden! Had kale growing in my garden since last spring, still alive till around 2 weeks ago when here in southern Missouri we got hit with negative temps. Ended up freeze drying the leaves. I was hoping it might live till this spring and I could harvest seed from it. Will need to do a lot more to keep it from dying next year! But definitely very hardy, such a wonderful plant.

I used a cut-down IBC tote top one year to cover my kale & othet fall crops. I bungeed it down using cords & 4 deep stakes. I only opened it on warm afternoons. A bit unweildy, but once cut- down short it was easy enough to flip over. I could spray water through the top port. Of course you have to plant in that configuration to start with.

@@flatsville1 got some row covers. But didn’t think of the kale when I saw temps were dropping. Had some mustard under it growing real strong too. @@stephenleaf3848 Yeah. You have to watch temps closely. I use Dark Sky for my location. Pretty damn accurate. If you decide to use IBC tote plastic, they need to be covered on occasion. Get some ratty old sleeping bags which are about the only things big enough to span the tote tops & sides.

The only issue is that Petunias are frost sensitive so they can't go in the garden as soon as some fo the others I talked about. You will want to plant Petunias indoors about 10 to 12 before your last frost, so probably a few more weeks depending on where you live.

Hi. I'm in zone 6b. Can you tell me what I can start outside in my small, unheated greenhouse around this time please?
@Lochness192 жыл бұрын
imo anything that doesn't bolt or die from a freeze. Mache (corn salad), claytonia, lettuce, beets, swiss chard, spinach, kale, collars, carrots, parsley, cilantro, parsnip, maybe even strawberries. Radish, arugula and brassica rapa crops (ex Napa cabbage, turnips, bok choy) seem prone to bolting after a freeze so I'd wait until March/April when your greenhouse is safe from freezes. You could try peas and fava beans in February/March as well, as they can handle light freezes.

@Belly Acres #3 (Jilly and Kerry) Yes, onions are harvested 100-120 days after the "starts" are put into the ground. They take a long time indoors to get them ready to be put in the garden as a "start" (5-6" tall, looking like a spring onion, and edible as such). Spring onions are sown outdoors, and grow from seed to harvest in a matter of weeks.💡 Bulb onions are a lot of work and time, but so worth it! They're heavy feeders, and they hate weeds too. Onion growers are heroes!😁 I think of that every time I eat one!😆
