We had to evacuate our home last week for a gas leak. It ended up being a small incident but we learned from it. The worst two things were trying to agree on whether to evacuate or not. It took an officer to tell him us. The pther thing was trying to round up five cats and get them into their carriers. We learned a lot grom this experience and are making changes as needed to our plan

The tip about getting local maps is a very important one! We were in Western North Carolina for Helene and the entire regional cell network went down. No power and no cell service meant no GPS and no Google Maps. We haven't lived here long and I was stuck racking my brain just to remember how the major highways connected to one another, much less what secondary or tertiary roads might be available! It was a lot of extra stress that a good set of maps would've completely erased. Remember that in a disaster or evacuation, it's also going to be nigh-impossible to get gas, so you can't make a lot of mistakes and wrong turns while driving.

I have noticed very few people I am around know how to use a basic paper map. Each of my family members know how. But, we had to teach their friends and coworkers.

So long as you have all the basics ready to deploy...from one or two boxes always at the ready and readily to hand. Also try isolating the power by throwing the power breaker in your mains box for a day or two and see if there is anything you need to obtain or use to be more ready when power is lost for real.

Also don't just hoard gear..only get what you need and learn how to use it! Try ot out and make sure it works before you need it!! Most people just buy n set on a shelf to collect dust. Also you should be going through every 6 months to check expiration dates, rotation of certain things and changing out seasonal items as needed.

Great intro to prepping video. Just want to note I have also obtained local maps from Chambers of Commerce, especially in smaller population areas. I also tie checking bags, emergency kits, vehicles, etc. to the solstices and equinoxes. That works for me. I've known people to do this when the time changes spring and fall, or tied to some other thing that occurs more often than once a year but less frequently than once a month. Or just put it on your calendar. You don't have to do all your checks at one of these times, in fact, I suggest doing some at one point and some at another to avoid being overwhelmed.

Another great, actionable video. Even though I live someplace that isn’t at risk of significant dangers (such as weather or natural disaster) that would require an evacuation, it is definitely something that is useful and necessary to plan for to be safe.

@ SE Wisconsin. We don’t get earthquakes or forest fires and we’re so close to Lake Michigan that we don’t get tornadoes and rarely a severe thunderstorm. We get some lake effect snow (but not much the last few years) and some cold wind chills. And if push came to shove, we’re right next to a giant body of fresh water.

Perhaps I'm fatalist but my biggest worry is a massive emergency like a war or a social chaos that you have no where to go or you can not stay on a place for long time. Hard times are on the way, I hope it is only fatalism and will never become a reality.

My family is expecting our next baby within the next week, my husband and I have had to have these conversations in the event of medical emergencies, so we've made our preparations and involved our older children so they know what to expect when it's time to make our moves.

Don't forget to prep for your pets! Doggie backpacks, dog crates, extra leashes/collars, food and water, medication, dog first aid kit, dog sweater and raincoat, chew bone, copy of immunizations. I practiced loading our car with our human emergency kits, dog emergency kit, dog crates, and of course space for humans. It is snug but we can fit! This is literally the only reason I have not adopted more- no more room in the evacuation car! 🐾🐕🐕🐾

So I don't have a AAA office anywhere near where I live, and paper maps are almost impossible to find these days. Does anyone have any tips or advice on how I can get a physical map of my local area?? I've tried printing out Google maps and stuff like that but I want a foldable map with more detail if possible!

There is a business locally called The Builders Exchange that most architects, contractors, etc send their print jobs to. I've sent them all sorts of stuff to print and laminate and I'll amazed it is fast and cheap. Could you check with your county offices like assessor or property or planning department for maps? Could you call and ask how to print them or how they print things like that? That might be a viable option for you!

How often do you feel like you should return back to east Texas. You said that you grew up in that part of the State. Cost of living should be less here than CA. Just wondering? Oh, good work on your videos. They do make this old man, that spent so many years teaching Scouts and Scouters many, many things on how to get through life.
