I have a Seiko 5 Field Watch (7S36-03J0) that looks similar to the SNK809. It's my most favorite GADA watch, and I wear it more often than other higher-end Seiko models in my collection. I think the review on the SNK809 is unfair. It's Hardlex crystal is already a good feature for it. Why would he expect Sapphire glass for a less-than-$100 Seiko field watch? Why compare it's aesthetics with a Bambino or Eco-drive dress watch that costs three times more? Comparing apples to oranges?

With the $65 addiesdive AD2048 existing- with sapphire crystal and the same nh35a/4r36 at 39mm and with a much better face, I just don't see the value in the seiko version at this point. Back when they were $90, absolutely it was a good buy. But at $150-200 these days you would have to be high to go with it.

The one line here that I am familiar with is the Presage Cocktail time. I have a few of them. None of them cost what the reviewer identifies as the price. Is that MSRP? Rather than $400+ I paid low to mid $300. And in that range these are awesome. Yes, I also wear some of the Orient Bambino line. I find these to be comparable with the Seiko having the edge on dial appearance. Stiil - good info. Just don't take the prices as Gospel.

I used a Seiko Kinetic for ten years and for the first five years it was one second fast a month. Even at the end it was only a few seconds a month fast. Still, it was time to try something different. The only drawback is that long periods idle, shorten the life of the power storage. Not for the collector; but for those who want one really great watch; fantastic.

I have a Seiko "AGS" or Automatic Generating System. It was the forerunner of the Seiko Kinetic series. It used to be my most frequently worn watch for about 15 years until it has become harder to find replacement for the power capacitor. It was as accurate as any other Quartz watch. I stopped replacing the capacitor when it stopped recharging 6 years ago. Now it just sits in my collection box, still looking pretty, waiting for me to find a new capacitor.

These days, Tissot has some excellent choices. Once upon a time, Seiko became famous as the go to brand for those who wanted a decent watch for a fair price. But now that they are pushing for Swiss kind of money, their QC seems to have gone down the toilet. For instance, my £15 plastic Casio does not suffer from a misaligned bezel. Why can't Seiko achieve that?

Some watch critics scoff at Hardlex. Some say it's just an overhyped version mineral crystal. But in reality, Hardlex is about 40% harder than mineral crystal and more than 130% harder than acrylic Hardlex hardness comparison compared to diamond, and with other watch crystals: Diamond --- 10 mohs Sapphire crystal --- 9 mohs Hardlex crystal --- 7 mohs Mineral crystal --- 5 mohs Acrylic crystal --- 3 mohs
@@nauticalmiles8752 We're talking about hardness, i.e. scratch resistance, not toughness or shatter resistance. Your impact resistance comparison is wrong because you put diamond on top of the list. The harder the material the more brittle it is, therefore less shatter resistant. Why are most diamonds small? Big diamonds are rare because they easily shatter into small pieces. But they are one of the hardest material on earth.

Not really. He's right these days. I would have recommended a seiko 5 as a starter watch 10 years ago. But their pricing is completely absurd now. $150+ on most of their starter watches. You can get a much nicer case and face from ali express brands with a nh34 or nh35 movement from seestern or addiesdive. Especially the field watch from addiesdive which is $65 with a seiko movement and a far better looking face. Seestern has a knockoff dive watch of the doxas for $115-130 with a seiko movement that is much cooler looking than their seiko 5 entry level divers. When seiko 5s were ~$100 and frequently went under I absolutely would have recommended them. But they're crazy now for a watch that just looks cheap compared to the much nicer cases and dials the chinese make available cheaper with the exact same movements.

Hardlex is simply a euphemism for “ plastic”. Seiko is a brand that offers many choices. The buyer should define what they want from a watch and proceed. Do your homework and make an informed decision. “Caviat emptor” ! Once you figure out what you want, chances are you will end up with a Seiko on your wrist and a smile on your face ! Enjoy the journey.
@rainnelmaclang480321 күн бұрын
Acrylic is plastic. It was used in vintage watches, and today, in mass-produced cheap watches. Hardlex, on the other hand, is a heat-hardened mineral glass. 40% harder than normal mineral crystal.

I agree with him because of seikos absurd pricing on their entry level models now. When you could get the field watch for $90 they offered good value and you would be okay with the face being a little ugly compared to the hamilton gold standard. But now that they want $150+ I mean come on. I'll just take some ali express watch with the exact same movement and a better case and face. You can get an addiesdive field watch for $65 with an nh35a and a good case and face. Or you could spend more and get a baltany with a MUCH better case and face than seiko offers for the same pricing. I should have bought their field watch 10 years ago before their pricing got insane but I ended up getting a 1981 digital seiko with a steel bracelet at an antique shop I liked a lot more than the same seiko 5 literally everyone has.
@CraigPowers-b8p18 күн бұрын
@ Sure, Seiko prices have increased, like every other major watch maker. And yes, a lot of newer, cheaper options from China that don’t have overhead and run extremely lean as a result. Not taking these market issues into account misses the point completely. Glad you like the Seiko-less options you have, so move forward with alternatives.
@ConstanceWhenever17 күн бұрын
@@CraigPowers-b8p You would have a point if the eco drives had also shot up in pricing, but they haven't. The citizen field watch is still just around $100 like the seiko 5 one used to be. 10 years ago the 5 series and eco drive were the same price on the low end. Seiko raised their prices because their standard field watch became so trendy as the entry level automatic along side the popularity of red wing boots and selvege jeans not because of any huge production cost shifts. You can still buy the seiko automatic movement for ~$30. The case is still their same cruddy flat sand blasted one, their crystal is still just hardlex mineral glass+. Seiko has a history of doing this and every time one of their inexpensive watches becomes trendy they discontinue it then re-release a new version of it with a few hundred dollar more msrp and some tweaks to the design. Alpinist is a huge example but there are many more. As a budget brand, seiko has fallen off. At least their sub-brand, orient, still has some good value. The 5 series is just awful now.
