I’m well versed in traditional hydroponics, but wound up here looking for more info on semi-hydro for houseplants. I was definitely expecting a video more in line with most of the other houseplant info videos on YT where the information is very superficial, ambiguous, or outright wrong. I was pleasantly surprised to hear you talking about total dissolved solids, ph, nute lockout, etc.. Good shit.

Hey Nora! Another mistake I learnt from (contrary to what you said in this video, but not what you DID in all) : fill bottom one third of the pot with leca and THEN put in the roots. I put in several plants with longer roots very low in the pot resulting in weak roots. Lesson learnt: Initial days, following the learning from KZbin to the T is good :-). Till you get comfortable with a methodology, keep experimentation to a minimum! PS: I had to watch the initial few minutes of the video twice. That Birkin is distractingly gorgeous!

I'm a beginner with plants but I watched the video of "kill this plant" saying he doesn't use LECA anymore because it's time consuming. Can you explain what he's talking about? From what I've been watching from your videos you only have to provide new nutrient solution every two weeks. I don't understand how that is time consuming....

Hey, so glad you stuck around. Learning to grow in leca does take some time. More than one video. People have lots of different methods of growing in leca. Those methods might be a bit more protracted which invariably leads to frustration. I recommend finding a method that works for you and you will find caring for plants in leca is so much easier than caring for plants in soil.

Generally no. There are always caveats with questions like that. It depends how you use them which is a bit more next level, but did the beginner user, using just seaweed as a primary nutrient is not a good idea.

Hello!! I have a question about your cache pots-I am wondering what is more important for light blocking. Height or width? I guess I have odd plant pot sizes because I’m struggling to find some that are both narrow enough & tall enough. So in the meantime while I search, what is more important so I can keep my plants safe until I find inexpensive things that fit in both directions? I have about 300 plants, so like most, buying nice ceramic pots for everyone just isn’t affordable! 😂 any advice would be most welcome! Thank you!!

I have been trying to answer your question but it hurts my head😁 please rephrase
@JessicaHolbrook-d6u Жыл бұрын
@@TheLecaQueen 😂😂😂 it hurts my head too-thanks for the reply! Wish I could add a picture to illustrate. Put another way, to keep the roots & nutrients safe from too much light, which is preferable: a short cache pot that leaves a portion of the top of the net pot exposed, or a tall cache pot that is much wider than the net pot? Or put even a third way-fighting with my brain to reconfigure the question again 🤣-is having the net pot much taller than the cache pot bad for the roots (since the net pot is transparent)? If this doesn’t clear up what I’m trying to say, then by golly, I don’t know what my problem is, but certainly no fault of yours so whether you can answer my question or not, many thanks for all the effort, I appreciate it! 😊 You’re the best! :) Jess

I agree with not messing around with plant roots. Even with other plants, such as succulents-they don’t exactly ‘need’ their roots, as they store water and energy in their leaves, and if you take a cutting of a succulent, we know it can sit and dry out for weeks before it becomes a problem. But I still don’t go repotting them all the time. What about potting semi-hydro plants in slightly larger pots? I just try to do that whenever possible. I’ve also been somewhat concerned with certain houseplants’ roots touching the water, because we know overwatering can happen… but I’m guessing only in soil? There’s more risk of anaerobic activity and compaction in soil, than with the aeration of LECA or PON, so I guess that’s why it’s never been an issue for me…? Still, trimming roots is not an issue for aroids, bromeliads, or succulents! I wouldn’t, however, be trimming roots off of more tender species, like begonias, violets, orchids, etc. unless you KNOW what you’re doing.

Ms. Leca Lady I enjoy your videos and I lovely your accent. It’s winter here in Germany and although the rule of thumb is to repot in spring/summer, but my Varigated Frydek in Semi Hydro is going nuts. She has 9 huge leaves from 36-43 cm long and is constantly pushing out Pups. I have 10 with 3 unrolling. Have you ever repotted in Winter? I believe the plant in SH isn’t as sensitive as in soil? I did repot my Pink Dragon and although she is still alive I see no growth or Pups. It’s been 2 months now. So what do you think? I wouldn’t care if she loses a leaf or 2 but the Pups are getting larger and harder to manage. I don’t like the hanging look so I’ve been propping them up. Drop me a line. Thanks for the tips.
@TheLecaQueen Жыл бұрын
I repot at any time. As long as the plant needs it. I think the rule about winter really is subjective depending on conditions in your home. If the plant is growing I would repot.

@@TheLecaQueen What I still don't understand is: When I water my moss poles, should I use inorganic fertilezer for hydroponic or just inorganic fertilizer for soil? Sphagnum is organic (like soil) or inorganic (like leca)? I really struggle in this, please help!
@MrWelfarehater Жыл бұрын
I guess. When I go to the hydroponic garden store, I see a lot of organic fertilizers for hydroponics. The employees working there say it works. The hydroponic garden store is actually a great place for advice. These ladies and gentlemen know what sells, what is returned, what works, and what doesn't. As for advice on the internet, well personally would seek advice from all sources, compare it and analyze it. Except for wicking, which I am extremely good at, I have no experience in hydroponics. If someone asked me on how to get started, I would tell them to start out with pothos, spider plant, peace lily. Something cheap, but hard to kill, and do it. If it flourishes great, try something a little more challenging. If it dies, figure out why and change course. When wicking I have plants with more roots in the reservoir, than the potting soil.
