No, you need to rewatch other videos. You’re confusing updating with trend chasing. Updating is for things that won’t be back in style. She always says to stay away from things that are too trendy for big buys. You can get a trendy pillow or blanket (styling items) but base high ticket buys should be neutral, non trend.

My neighbor is a design consultant as her husband is a builder. She’s a big believer in making your house YOURS, not what other people think you should have. If you want a fiberglass shower because you hate the expense and cleaning tile, go for it. It’s about being comfortable in your own home and not worrying about keeping up with what you feel like your supposed to have.

The main thing that dates your house is redoing entire rooms or the entire house all at once. Because like it or not, you’re going to be influenced by trends. If you build it slowly, your paint color might be 2012, but your couch is 2022, and so on. Antiques help too.

I love this video. I just painted Gray 2 years ago. I used professional painters and it cost a lot. I need to keep this gray for a while, I am sure lots of people have gray, I am sure, and can not afford to change their entire house. I am decorating with beige, creams, browns, and tans. I use a pop of color each season that helps bring my rooms to life. I must say it looks pretty awesome with my gray walls. My gray is not a cool gray but a warmer gray. I think I do not look dated at all.

Speaking as someone who used to spend my free time on this stuff I just want people to know that home decor is a neverending money suck. Design is subjective in the end - you can copy people but in the end you’ll want something that actually feels like you and your family. And these design trends are just that-trends. They change constantly and you will never reach the end of it. Find a hobby that actually matters. There are sooooo many more worthwhile things to spend money on or give money to.

Come on😉 People know that and they are here because they want to. Great that you’ve outgrown interior decorating and enjoy your time on other things. But many really like it as a hobby just as any other and find it fulfilling. We’re all different and personally I hate anybody telling me what to spend my time and money on✌️

Love your channel: however, could not resist this one. 10 years ago all of the RH stores did "slate gray" on their walls with all white furniture. I fell in love, and painted every wall in my home with their paint. I still have slate gray walls (even though they changed to white) and white furniture, with black accessories. I also changed from brass to polished nichol. I tire of things easily but never tired of this look. Everyone who enters my small modest home asked who my designer is. It's breath taking, so I don't see myself changing any time soon. It's all in how you work with this color that makes it fabulous!!!

As an English decor enthusiast, these “outdated” decor schemes actually can be melded with modern touches for a layered and lovely home. I have even seen the “orange” oak cabinets look absolutely modern and cool with changes in surrounding tile and textiles! I watch Valentina for educational and entertainment purposes…i.e., she is a hoot! (And she really did make accommodations for using carpet as well as suggestions for the other outdated concepts.)

One thing that I think really dates a house is light fixtures. About these 90s-2000s oak cabinets, you can also dye them into a more neutral tone, so you keep the texture of wood, without the dated color. Change the countertop and hardwares, the color of the walls, light fixtures and you get a new look while still keeping the cabinets. Sure, it won't be top trends, but it will look fresh enough. ^__^

If you want a change, that is fine but that "dated" look is so subjective. I am tired with these so called designers pushing to make the illusion that other wood colors are dated or are so horrible they cannot exist, when that is not true. Kitchens can be "updated" to look fresh even with their wood color as is. They were there in the first place for a reason.

Heavy wood antique furniture is an obsession! And with family heirlooms and Facebook Marketplace, I’ve been able to furnish my home very inexpensively. I love that no one wants it! A mashup of cottagecore, western ranch (turns out antique saddles are cool design accessories and my cats say they’re the best cat chairs - plus photos of cats on saddles are everything!) and dark academia - heck yes please. Did I mention I have ADHD and get bored easily? I never thought about it until just now, but I wonder if that’s why my design style is “all the things all over the place” :-) BUT in my defense these styles have common elements, and with thoughtful color choices, placement and repetitive textures, I think they actually blend beautifully.

cheery wood is just really dark and masculine looking. it’s really hard to lighten it up and make it look light, airy, fresh and feminine. if it’s real wood you can always stain it, you don’t necessarily have to throw it away if it’s in good shape. i just moved and someone gave me a solid wood table but the color wood doesn’t go with my floors, but it’s in great shape & a quality piece so i’m just going to stain it

I've had hardwood floors and they always seem to be dusty...I think carpet is actually much easier to clean. Plus I just love the softness of it. I'll also be doing a 2-tier island (against all my friends' advice) because I've always hated flat islands and counter-height barstools. In the end, who cares? Trends come and go. By choosing my favorite things, I won't have to worry about it going out of style every few years because it'll be MY style, not everyone else's!

Wood floors are through out the rest of the house. If you vacuum regularly there shouldn’t be dust build up 🤔…The connection hose gets behind furniture. It will help with keeping the rooms warm in winter and as a sound barrier between upstairs and downstairs. We have an open floor plan and are doing the 2-tiered island/table set up too! I love a counter height island and do not like climbing onto bar stools to sit for meals…so uncomfortable for me😬. It will be T shape …top of T is the island and bottom of T is the family table. 🙌🏼

You’re right it does a lot for the acustic in a room - even rugs. My house in in fact dated. Yup… I bought a 1927 Sears bungalow that had been stripped in the name of “Modern Farmhouse” style. I went right to work putting walls back up…recreating woodwork… hunting vintage fixtures and I even found the original built-in buffet and china hutches that had been ripped out. 😊 My house looks just like it did in 1935 thanks to a photo that a family member gave me. So… yes… my home is dated and I couldn’t be happier!!! ( Just in the interest of total transparency… a bedroom and bathroom were added in the 70s and instead of installing a vintage claw footed tub I did put in a large shower but using vintage tiles and fixtures.)

Absolutely spot on! We built our house in 2000 and those are the exact things we changed to update it. Changed out all the shiny brass hardware to bronze, painted my oak cabinets cream, got rid of ALL carpet (even in the bedrooms)- went with dark wood laminate floors. I chose classic over trendy (gray) and I think my choices will look amazing for years to come. Did warm gray paint in bedrooms and baths but I actually like it in those rooms and it’s just paint and will be easy to change when I’m over it. Solid advice and I love that you acknowledge that you should do what you love-then it doesn’t really matter if it’s “dated”- if you love it, you love it and that’s what’s most important!

I have my two cents opinion to add here :-) White looks good in "interesting" rooms (with some architectural interest), but in a box house----the lower-end homes, it can look very "contractor thoughtless" And beige HAS to be the right beige to match the flooring!! I have a pink undertone in my kitchen tiles (that will be GONE soon) and yellow-toned "wood" IKEA cabinet faces (that will also be gone soon). They clash and it looks worse than dated. I believe this is the struggle some people have---seeing the undertones in materials/colors. Sometimes "strong" colors can really give life to a room that is otherwise a BOX and detract from other features that one doesn't have the $$$ to replace---yet. For example, at least in Pinterest photos, an all "almost black" room (ceilings and all) can look good in rooms that are featureless. It makes the household's furniture etc stand out---like an art gallery. White and beige are "safe" but can (much of the time) look quite boring if not done right (in the contractor homes). What do you think?

I agree with you 100 percent. Stark whites seem to work best as the backdrop to either good furniture, good architecture, or interesting colors in the room (including black and white like Valentina's home). My kitchen is white (BM Chantilly Lace), because I have green upper cabinets and black lowers, and I wanted the cabinets to pop. Generally, though, I think softer tones are more decor friendly. Dove Wing is one safe bet and has become my favorite no-brainer paint.

Well, I think the trend now is mixing vintage pieces, be it cherry or something else with a few newer pieces; the effect being more relaxed and cozy and less sterile as too much modern furniture will do to a house. Cherry wood cabinets can be very beautiful and timeless, with maybe updating the countertops and handles. And please, could people start buying couches in something else than white? How about taupe or even darker?

Don’t you think matte black could be too modern in a traditional home? I like polished nickel because it’s warmer than chrome. So it’s more neutral, in my opinion. Obviously Unlaqured brass is always beautiful.

11:35…those are my cabinets EXACTLY! Oh, they are the worst. So dated! I painted mine as a little refresh until we can do a full renovation. Keep in mind you can do little changes at a time. Change out one light fixture here and there until one day they’re all fresh and new. Same with knobs, faucets, paint. I’ve been doing my entire home over time. It makes the project seem doable and affordable.

I find white walls so boring. No personality to the house especially if your sofa and chairs are white or cream. I feel like everything fades into each other. Your black fire place helps balance it out. However white on white on white is boring and looks like you had no thought for the room.

Thank you for the great video! We just bought a new house and are doing a small renovation before moving in. We have to paint the interior and exterior of the house also the roof. I was thinking of a charcoal painted roof with soft white interior and exterior walls. Found a Dulux color named "cotton fantasy" its a soft, but bright white almost with a brown/yellow/cream undertone. Can i paint the same color on the interior and exterior (obviously mixing the color into an exterior paint at the paint shop) or will that not work? Also how do you know you have the perfect white?? So nervous! Thank you! Love from South Africa!

I like carpet in my bedroom because I like the soft feel on my bare feet. But another alternative to Berber wall-to-wall carpeting is carpet tiles. Cost is an issue for many of us, so getting bang for the buck is important. One way to keep one's costs down, and keep one's house from getting dated is to avoid getting too trendy in the first place. Stay timeless and neutral, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, and with the really expensive stuff like sofas, tables, chairs, and the paint on the walls. Be trendy via pillows, trows, hardware, decor, etc. that are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.
