My advice to everyone is this: if you want to grow big this year especially in your finances, be willing to make investments. Saving is great but investing puts you on a pedestal where you wouldn't have to worry about savings as much as you do now. Thanks to my FA, my portfolio is doing really great and I'm proud of the decisions I made last year.

So pay off your car and keep it. pay off the motorcycle and keep it. don't buy anymore depreciating assets for at least 10 years. every month put 1k into savings and strive to max out your ROTH IRA, and or contribute 5% of your paycheck to your 401k. Hope this helps!

@yourmanzach2307 I appreciate your input! I'm only allowing myself to buy the bike if I pay off my current car. It was expected to be a 3 year payment, but I'm doing it in one. I plan on holding onto these vehicles for a long time. I'm putting 1k a month into my HYSA and hope to max out the Roth IRA because I'll be making good money AND living at home. I will match 6% on my 401k next year.

If there are data sets of top 50% people I'd love to see those lateral limits when doing the average/median of net worth, IRA etc. Don't think we should justify our pace by matching populations who are behind, right? Maybe not, but I prefer to chase the rabbit.

Humphrey- I want to follow the general rule of “being the market instead of beating the market” while maximizing returns where it’s possible. Finally diversified into international (FTIHX) but I wanted to know if I was crazy for wanting to hold both FXAIX (SP500) AND FSKAX (total market). This is for my Roth IRA and I was thinking of doing 80% in these two US indexes, 20% in international. There are a lot of sources saying it is too much overlap but I feel as though it gives me a total market mix with extra weight in the sp500. Thanks for any input!
@humphreyАй бұрын
I think it’s OK to have some of that overlap personally. 80/20 US/intl is a good split so if you stick to that should be ok
@lucaspm98Ай бұрын
Do you have a specific reason you want to be overweight the SP 500? If the answer is because it’s outperformed the market recently - then ask yourself if it outperforming recently makes it more or less likely to do the same going forward. If you don’t have a clear answer to that, there’s no reason to chase past performance.
@matt9741Ай бұрын
@@lucaspm98 well, one short term consideration is the weight I am already in on FXAIX. I went in 100% on that investment when I left my previous financial advisor and went to Fidelity until I had a better understanding of what I wanted. Long term, I am not completely opposed to being just total market.
@matt9741Ай бұрын
@@lucaspm98one short term consideration is that when I left my previous financial advisor and the platform he used, I went 100% in on FXAIX until I figured out where I wanted to get more diversification. Now I am starting the process of balancing it out , but i still 90% in that SP500 fund. Long term, I would not be opposed to going all in on total market. I’m drawn to keeping extra weight in the SP500, but I suppose that was the purpose of bringing it up.

The buying vs renting argument is ridiculous. I’ve never seen rent lower than my mortgage. When you rent you are often paying on what the house would sell for presently whereas my mortgage is based off of what the house was worth several years ago-pre inflation, pre riots, pre covid. Renting is unstable for having a family. At the end of my life my kids can then sell my house or live in it rent and mortgage free or even rent it out.

The bit immediately after the 30k millionaire, reminds me of when I bought a used BMW last year, and the salesman told me they see a surprising amount of repos. You don’t NEED to do anything. But you might want to. You don’t touch your 401k until 55, so if you decide to retire earlier or need the money earlier, an investment portfolio may be a good bridge account. Also you should look at the fees your 401k administrator charges, usually they’re higher. Some ppl choose to leverage independent investments/roth Ira with much better tax benefits, investment options or fees than their work’s 401k.
@bvoyelrАй бұрын
@@SweetPotata10 This is roughly my thinking as well. If you want to retire earlier, you'll need something outside of 401k. Beyond that, 401k is going to be your safest vehicle -- it grows tax free, which makes a huge difference at higher incomes -- and you specifically can't touch it (or, well, you can't touch it without severe penalty), meaning it's mostly safe from future you who might not be as responsible as present-day you 😺
@SweetPotata10Ай бұрын
@@bvoyelr tax free growth only if it’s Roth 401k…otherwise tax deferred. But I get your point. It’s actually more enticing to do traditional 401k if you’re a high earner since income will likely to be lower in retirement than while employed. But, it’s all a gamble bc tax rates will likely be going up at every bracket in the future, at least in my mind.

I'm tired of hearing the trope that people who look rich are actually poor, and people who look poor are actually rich. People who are truly desperately poor often look poor. And people who are truly rich often look rich. A toyota camry is NOT a sign of wealth. People who actually are rich usually drive expensive cars. I don't think rich person when I see someone in and old Toyota and I don't think poor person when I see someone in a Lambo. Yes when it comes to the middle class it can often be the opposite of what you see. But let's dispense with the cope and just accept that some people are rich and look like it.
@asw654Ай бұрын
You probably lack the experience and pattern matching to see what that trope is referring to. Your diction and examples betray your youth. Camry has long been called the "poor man's BMW" back when BMWs actually meant something. It was one of the top classes of sedans. It's perfectly serviceable for business-minded people who don't need to show off but can afford a reliable sedan. Meanwhile, Lambo is infamous for being a car that looks stylish and that prole/ghetto people dream of to show once they finally make it big. If I truly had money to just toss around as I wished, there are better options for super sports cars. If I saw someone who lacked class open the door to his Lambo, I won't suddenly think he's rich just because of his car. I will think he rented or leased it temporarily to show off to his friends and women. He's throwing money away. You could have chosen the latest trendy supercar like Bugatti instead.
