I remember when I was little (5 or 6), and my Grandpa telling me, _"Don't pat a horse like a dog. Stroke them; move your hand in a gentle manner down their neck."_ and so on. He showed me, and explained thats how their mothers would show them affection when they were foals. I knew our dogs and cats liked these "long pets" (to my child mind). And reasoned horses would too. Just as Grandpa said.🤣 From that day forward, if I wasn't in the yard, it wasn't difficult to find me! I was small, even for my age! I would stand in the feed trough to reach the horses!😂 After a few weeks, they would almost line up wanting some attention. Sadly, when Grandpa passed away, they sold his horses. I never saw any of them again. I was on line a few days ago, and saw a horse for sale that triggered a memory from my childhood of 50+ years ago!!! A black gelding that looks JUST LIKE my Grandpa's horse "Boo". 😁 Now I find myself watching lots of horse videos.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I enjoyed this! Thanks! Good memories!

@@BlitzenSpeaks Thank you for sharing those memories with us. Sounds like you had a great grandfather who loved his horses, and you, very much. So sad when humans die that the animals get sold off And we never know what happens to them. This is why I have my three horses, and my seven rescue dogs, in my will. They will always be cared for even if I'm not here to do it myself anymore. 🙏🏼

Thank you for talking about rubbing! I hate it when I see people whack on their horse!

Or any animal. I see people pat hard on dogs, too. Why?

My three horses meet varying degrees of those five criteria I'm happy to say! My sassy halflinger Appaloosa pony and my old quarter horse meet all five. My older holsteiner meets four (he only nickers some of the time). And all of them love the neck rubs. I've also found that letting them come to me and lower their heads to be pet before I raise my hands to start petting their faces seems to go better then when I just reach out and start petting them immediately. Great video and very reinforcing for us horse owners (especially the part about the treats--mine all get treats And even though they still show those signs when they don't get treats, I know they're happier when they get their snacks just like I am!)😅 Thanks again!

All of my horses including the very strong willed ones were exactly this. They may have arrived in a way more alert and uncalm state but very soon that altered to relaxed happy horses. Straight leadership that is constant but absolutely fair and never mean. Plus I never ever treat. Always place food or fruit etc into a feed bucket but not hand feeding. There is nothing worse than a bargy horse digging about for food. If this little mare is anything to go by you know your stuff.

Nothing takes the place of just being a good, kind person. In other words, don’t be a douche. Lol

If that was true you wouldn't need to brag about it.
