I started learning how to play the guitar back in 2020 . I remember I used to avoid bar chords until I realized most of the songs I wanted to play used that kind of chords, so I began practicing every day. After so much patience and practicing every day I have finally mastered how to play most bar chords. There’s still some things to learn but looking back at how I struggled back in 2020 I can see a real progress.

Today I worked on my bar chords for hours. I tell what helped me. Everything he said is true but I tried two different things. One is I used just my my three fingers and not my index finger, I trained those fingers not barring at first then I added in my index finger later as I got really good with my three fingers. Still while I was practicing I just had my index finger straight up over the strings but not putting pressure on it. I did this countless times. I also picked middle finger to go down first just slightly before the other fingers followed. I'm learning the song by The Bee Gees to love somebody. It has a B major in it. I practiced going from the A major to the B major like two hundred times also using a metronome to see if my speed was increasing. And lt was over time until it became in perfect timing for the song . I hope this may help someone.. most of all you must keep going don't let it stop you from becoming awesome. Tonight was the first night I actually played the bar chord perfect and on time. Also dropping the thumb down behind the neck is deadly important. Best of luck to all this guy is also awesome.

I am probably an intermediate guitar player (have been playing guitar a little more than a year, but I picked up guitar very easily because I have been playing violin for 6 to 7 years) and I suddenly have been able to do bar chords. The biggest piece of advice I can give anyone is to find a song you really like by your favorite music artist, and learn it, that is how I learned to do bar chords anyway.

If barre chords are consistently giving you an issue - especially towards the middle of the neck - I'd consider trying them out on a different guitar (eg a friend's or at a guitar store). I had the hardest time with barre chords before it eventually dawned on me that my guitar neck was warped. Long story short, purchasing a new guitar made a world of difference.

I've been playing guitar for 30 years and decided to go back to the roots to see what I may have missed. I play all open chords on my acoustic and power chords on electric. I've come across bar chords on the acoustic and figure out an easier way, so yes I avoided them. I can't believe one simple thing I just learned has made a HUGE difference on the acoustic that no one never taught me, I always had my index finger on the middle of the fret and had some dead strings but now that I slid up to the fret bar OMG what a difference! No more avoiding bar chords! Thank You! 👍

Excellent Barre Lesson, Dave!😃 power chords are a precursor to barre chords so I totally agree the must be used first. I believe in isolation excercises. So to strengthen Only the Index finger, I recommend placing then pressing the barre finger at fret1 and hold it There for 4 strums acosa all 6 strings. The goal; place press and hold your barre finger on every fret between 1 and fret9. moving the barre finger up from fret1 the fret9 by placing, pressing, holding while strumming 4 times at each fret as your moving up to fret9. So start on fret1 and barre all 6 strings, strum that position 4 times the move up to fret2. Now you’re on fret2 so strum all 6 strings 4 times while pressing and holding your barre finger at Fret2 and so on …..move up to fret3 and repeat the whole process to you reach fret9. This exercise will create a pathway of tension between your thumb muscle to you index finger; the muscles that connect the thumb to the palm and then to the index finger.

As a beginner I wouldn't say it's hard to hold or to play a barre chord. Fast changes like Am to F, or D to F are much harder. Btw. my power chords suck much more than my F: with a barre chord I have a stable "clamp" of the barre and not only three fingertips to hold the strings.
@GuitarZero2Hero7 жыл бұрын
I'd say what you need to focus on is your power chords then by the sound of it. Practice Am to F power chord changes. Then that will make the Am to F barre chord easier over time!

Let me add a further Tip. Tip No. 6. Hold the barre down only when it is needed. That is when you are striking with the right hand. You will tire, hurt and suck very quickly if you keep it pressed all the time. It's also the basis for damping and actually getting any decent quality rhythm and any syncopation at all.
@ParitoshPai947 жыл бұрын
Another reason could be a misaligned guitar neck. I struggled with barre for almost 3-4 months even though I used to play for 4-5 hours everyday. They wouldn't even ring out properly and my wrists would hurt like hell. Then one day I went to the guitar store to get my strings changed and the guy at the store told me the neck was misaligned and after he fixed it, it was like up until then Id been trying to play the chords with 5x or 10x the effort actually required. Now I can play them effortlessly and pretty much any barre chord.
