I just wish she explained the relationship on WHY these shapes are used. You learn open chords first for a reason. Every six string major/minor bar chord uses the shape of the open E chords! Go ahead and play an E major open chord, notice how the shape is the exact same as the bar chords. You’re moving the nut by barring the fret. This is such essential knowledge to know. She’s throwing patterns and not explaining anything about them which confuses beginners by no fault of their own. Once you understand this, it all clicks and makes perfect sense. The same applies to the open A major/Minor chord. If you move the nut by barring, you can play a major/minor chord anywhere on the fretboard using those SAME shapes in ANY key.

I just discovered you. I’m so grateful for your instruction. When I was 12 I was forced to learn to play, and it went badly. Still I kept what I learned (cowboy chords 😂) but when it was time to progress to bar chords, I hit a brick wall. No one ever taught me, and I didn’t ask. But tonight I accidentally found this. When you showed the “6-4-1-5” chord progression my jaw literally dropped open. True story. I never knew there was an exercise I could practice. Now I can. I’m now 59 years old. Thank you forever. What a precious gift you just gave me.

Good tips. As a Guitar Teacher of close to 40 years the biggest issue I have found with students is placement of the wrist and palm. While some chords you can get away with having the thumb on top of the neck (although not usually recommended but there are times it's required) and the palm touching the neck, with Barre Chords I always tell students I should be able to slip 2 fingers between the Thumb and Index finger as well as between the palm and the neck of the Guitar. In other words the wrist and the palm need to be down and away from the neck otherwise there is absolutely no way the Index finger can make a straight "bar"...aka Barre. In close to 40 years of teaching literally thousands of students I have never met a player who's hand did not work that way.

Hi. The way I would play the barre, Dm in the progression you are describing would be to base it on the 5th fret, 5th string, Am open shape so as to keep the chords closer together. This is especially important on acoustic guitars where volume and intonation vary when separating the chords by too much distance on the fretboard.

Apparently, my hands were never meant for playing guitar, but I took it up anyway and I managed to get pretty ok at it. Even so, there are so many things I still have trouble with; like barre chords. So, I use a slide, which helps and I play a lot of Blues, so it works out. Still, just once, I'd like to be able to play barre chords comfortably with little to no trouble at all! Either way, my issues don't take from this being a fantastic video! Big Thumbs up!

Hi, I can relate since I have also been playing for over 40 years and have been playing open chord rhythm since I have a tough time with barre chords. I can’t seem to figure out how to get the proper finger placement to get the correct pressure on all the strings. This video was as helpful as it can be but it is still a challenge for me. Maybe one day it will just click. It would certainly make chord changes a lot quicker and easier!

@@Doowopsid Hello, my friend, I'm glad to see that someone knows exactly what I am talking about - I'm glad you can relate, but I do feel your pain. Ironically enough, and because of this video, I have decided to consider something I have refused to consider in the past, which is the acquisition of smaller, or "baby" guitar. I have refused this route, probably because the stigma of a baby guitar. However, I have decided that if I want to achieve my best playing, I need to accept that I have never been able to palm a basket, but even worse, get my fingers around a guitar neck properly. So, in the spirit of gracefully accepting defeat, I just purchased a Fender Mini Squire in the hopes that this guitar puts on a path to greatness - at least local admiration. And who knows, if this works out, there might also be a "Baby Taylor" in my future, but I won't get ahead of myself just yet. Mostly, I am hoping that by spending some time with this smaller guitar, it will eventually help me to improve the handle barre chords on a true-sized guitars, like my Les Paul. My Les Paul is a guitar that I hope to play at full potential some day. We'll see how it goes....Maybe I will drop a line back to let you know how it went.
@Doowopsid3 жыл бұрын
@@RumbleFish69 Hi, thanks for writing back to me. I hope you have greater success with the Fender Mini Squire. I have also thought about getting another guitar with a thinner neck or a 3/4 size “baby” too but haven’t gone that route yet. I have a few guitars but my go to ones are my Fender Strat and an Ibanez acoustic electric. I play mostly Doowop with open chords but it would be a lot easier to play Chuck Berry type songs using barre chords. I would appreciate if you would stay in touch and let me know if you find it easier to handle barre chords with the Fender Mini. If you do then I might start searching for one too.
