I am a retired professor and can recognize that this young lady is an exceptional instructor - and probably the single best instructor I have ever encountered. Her introductions, illustrations, conceptualizations, repetitions, comparisons, corrections, and recommendations are always so well explained and encouraged. And her ability to communicate her expertise is uncanny. Souls like her are so rare.

I just wish she explained the relationship on WHY these shapes are used. You learn open chords first for a reason. Every six string major/minor bar chord uses the shape of the open E chords! Go ahead and play an E major open chord, notice how the shape is the exact same as the bar chords. You’re moving the nut by barring the fret. This is such essential knowledge to know. She’s throwing patterns and not explaining anything about them which confuses beginners by no fault of their own. Once you understand this, it all clicks and makes perfect sense. The same applies to the open A major/Minor chord. If you move the nut by barring, you can play a major/minor chord anywhere on the fretboard using those SAME shapes in ANY key.

I just discovered you. I’m so grateful for your instruction. When I was 12 I was forced to learn to play, and it went badly. Still I kept what I learned (cowboy chords 😂) but when it was time to progress to bar chords, I hit a brick wall. No one ever taught me, and I didn’t ask. But tonight I accidentally found this. When you showed the “6-4-1-5” chord progression my jaw literally dropped open. True story. I never knew there was an exercise I could practice. Now I can. I’m now 59 years old. Thank you forever. What a precious gift you just gave me.

Good tips. As a Guitar Teacher of close to 40 years the biggest issue I have found with students is placement of the wrist and palm. While some chords you can get away with having the thumb on top of the neck (although not usually recommended but there are times it's required) and the palm touching the neck, with Barre Chords I always tell students I should be able to slip 2 fingers between the Thumb and Index finger as well as between the palm and the neck of the Guitar. In other words the wrist and the palm need to be down and away from the neck otherwise there is absolutely no way the Index finger can make a straight "bar"...aka Barre. In close to 40 years of teaching literally thousands of students I have never met a player who's hand did not work that way.

Your tips on wrist position and index finger rotation made an instant improvement in sound and comfort. You just opened up a whole new world on guitar for me !!! Thank you so much for your clear instruction. Keep the great lessons coming.

Sentences start with a capital letter. Your second sentence is run-on. Try Subject Verb Object. Also, "I'm at the intermediate stage as a guitar recitalist and jam player". Re-read, rethink and reconsider before pushing, "Send". Also, women are mostly smooth muscle. Women are not really supposed to have biceps. Your Rosy, the Riveter cartoon violates the doctrine of percentage development of the arm. The arm is a complex system. Overdeveloping one part of the arm leads to an unproportioned, over-allotted brachial system. Are you really a woman? Why do you wish to look like a man? Did something happen when you were three years old? What do you say, "Crackajack"? I'm 58 and just started to learn to play guitar when covid hit us hard. My hubby is a firefighter and I have auto immune diseases so Dr.s orders were he couldn't come near me since he was dealing with covid patients. We have been together for 17 yrs and never are apart and madly in love so this was just extremely difficult. I decided I'd learn the guitar as a distraction and maybe even play him music since he had to stay in the basement. I can play like crazy now! I've watched your videos before but couldn't find you again. I am sooo ready to watch all your videos! Your my inspiration! So your guitar gets put in the corner glaring at you for being lazy and useless. Also we get the bonus of extending barre chords to chord progressions - all in a quarter hour lesson. Yup. Great explanation of how to angle your finger for BAR CHORDS...LIKE I HAVE SAID”38 years at it,and being a construction worker I have strong hands,but that also gives me a deep crease in every joint so I have problems barring sometimes if I forget to,like you said,””turn my 1st finger on that little bit of a angle I always end up having to double check sometimes still after 38 years...Mind you it’s not with straight bar chords but more advanced ones especially the 3 high strings ,actually will sit in between the joints of my finger, like you said not allowing some notes to be played...EXCELLENT ADVICE👍

Hi. The way I would play the barre, Dm in the progression you are describing would be to base it on the 5th fret, 5th string, Am open shape so as to keep the chords closer together. This is especially important on acoustic guitars where volume and intonation vary when separating the chords by too much distance on the fretboard.

I think an easy way to help explain the major bar chord is to keep the last 3 fingers in the shape of an E chord all the way up the fret board and imagining your first finger as the movable nut. And for the minor chord, just lifting off the middle finger. Good job!

I have been playing guitar for almost 40 years and this is something I still have great difficulty with. I can do it, but not comfortably - I have pretty small hands. Apparently, my hands were never meant for playing guitar, but I took it up anyway and I managed to get pretty ok at it. Even so, there are so many things I still have trouble with; like barre chords. So, I use a slide, which helps and I play a lot of Blues, so it works out. Still, just once, I'd like to be able to play barre chords comfortably with little to no trouble at all! Either way, my issues don't take from this being a fantastic video! Big Thumbs up!

Hi, I can relate since I have also been playing for over 40 years and have been playing open chord rhythm since I have a tough time with barre chords. I can’t seem to figure out how to get the proper finger placement to get the correct pressure on all the strings. This video was as helpful as it can be but it is still a challenge for me. Maybe one day it will just click. It would certainly make chord changes a lot quicker and easier!

@@Doowopsid Hello, my friend, I'm glad to see that someone knows exactly what I am talking about - I'm glad you can relate, but I do feel your pain. Ironically enough, and because of this video, I have decided to consider something I have refused to consider in the past, which is the acquisition of smaller, or "baby" guitar. I have refused this route, probably because the stigma of a baby guitar. However, I have decided that if I want to achieve my best playing, I need to accept that I have never been able to palm a basket, but even worse, get my fingers around a guitar neck properly. So, in the spirit of gracefully accepting defeat, I just purchased a Fender Mini Squire in the hopes that this guitar puts on a path to greatness - at least local admiration. And who knows, if this works out, there might also be a "Baby Taylor" in my future, but I won't get ahead of myself just yet. Mostly, I am hoping that by spending some time with this smaller guitar, it will eventually help me to improve the handle barre chords on a true-sized guitars, like my Les Paul. My Les Paul is a guitar that I hope to play at full potential some day. We'll see how it goes....Maybe I will drop a line back to let you know how it went.
@Doowopsid
@Doowopsid 3 жыл бұрын
@@RumbleFish69 Hi, thanks for writing back to me. I hope you have greater success with the Fender Mini Squire. I have also thought about getting another guitar with a thinner neck or a 3/4 size “baby” too but haven’t gone that route yet. I have a few guitars but my go to ones are my Fender Strat and an Ibanez acoustic electric. I play mostly Doowop with open chords but it would be a lot easier to play Chuck Berry type songs using barre chords. I would appreciate if you would stay in touch and let me know if you find it easier to handle barre chords with the Fender Mini. If you do then I might start searching for one too. Thanks and good luck!

Thank you for that great lesson. I'm trying to help my daughter and her friend learn guitar (they are 10) and we'll need to start practicing bare chords soon. I think this will be their lesson. Many thanks!

JAMES SCOTT NICHOLSON, ONTARIO, CANADA 🇨🇦 ANOTHER GREAT TIP,YOUR WRIST OUT SO YOU CAN FRET PROPERLY... THIS IS THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM I FACE WHEN TEACHING!!! SO I EXAGGERATE IT A LITTLE,TO SHOW I CANNOT FRET PROPERLY IF MY WRIST IS BACK!!! (“SO VERY IMPORTANT,AND IT’S THINGS LIKE THIS YOU DON’T LEARN,JUST PLAYING BY EAR”)...

Wow this is the first time I’ve heard anyone go into detail about the best ways to put your fingers and elbow to get the easiest sound from barre chords. Major kudos to you for such a great lesson. I actually feel like I can take the challenge on now. So happy I tripped across this lesson! 👏👏👏

I like the clear concise instructions with relative supporting comments and no hyper fluff. Actually had my theory and practical application of it click into place on how to find barre cords based on root string and the shape I should use to construct it with while watching this video. I was able to tell where the next one in the progression would go and the shape to use. Thank you!
