This is such a great video! These are basically the stitches I use 95% of the time when I'm sewing! Thanks for illustrating how simple the actual sewing bit of historical costuming can be!

Here because I woke up remember my five year old asking me if we can sew something..I intend to foster her interest and your tips seem pretty simple for me as a beginner myself. Now to figure out the needle to buy and look around for some fabric :)

Very nice.I was so fascinated by cloth stitching with modern machines.But I used to watch a lot of historical movie and wondered how people before sewing machine was invented, sewed the cloths. now I have less doubt thanks.

Thank you!! I now know that my first attempt at a backstitch a few years ago was actually a poorly executed spaced backstitch. I also now know the names of stitches I've been doing my whole life, but that no one told me what they were called. This will definitely make tutorials easier to follow once I'm home and free to sew again! Thank you!! ^_^

Yea i recently started teaching myself how to sew and i know i realy shouldn't but i would push the needle trough with the flat part of my tumb nail and at the end of the day i would wonder why my nail/finger would hurtXD. I should realy start to use a timble instead of my nail. I also have a pair if tiny flat pliers to pull and push the needle trough thick pieces:).
@katielove99322 жыл бұрын
I always had trouble with a thimble because it was clumsy on my finger and the needle would slip up against it. When I want to push a needle through, I use a small block of wood. It's so easy and doesn't pierce my fingers. And "yes", there are times like what you do, I do too. I will take small pliers and pull the needle through.
@krystelhardesty99604 жыл бұрын
I could never figure out how to use a thimble, but I found some silicone ones that will fit on all your fingers and that's what I use. I do mostly embroidery, cross stitch and applique work so a little different than this but still all hand work.

When piecing patchwork quilts, do you prefer the running backstitch or the backstitch? (Trying to decide if quilt seams would take a lot of stress.)
@fernlintner654 жыл бұрын
This is great thanks sew much! Been handstitching all my life but only for finishes and finicky things I am looking forward.....to making one of the caps with Burnley and Trowbridge sew along next week. However, thimbles really make my finger sweat do you know a solution?

I have no idea what kind of stitch I have been doing, I think I made it up or it's meant to be one of these but I am just really bad at it. but it holds things together so, I guess it's fine?
@Victory.In.Jesus952 жыл бұрын
So basically whip stitch is the standard way of making dress shirt sleeves? I want to start hand sewing the things I can’t find in stores, so what kind of stitching works best for sewing lace unto a cotton shirt?
@johnkoester77952 жыл бұрын
What kind of stitching would work for closing a bandanna after folding it?

Beginner here. Why is running backstitch frowned upon for shift side seams?
@WilloughbyRose3 жыл бұрын
It’s just not as secure, and shifts take a lot of washing etc so the stronger the stitch, the better in that application.

Who taught you? Was always impressed on “Gilmore Girls” that lead character could sew well, and that it was accepted as “Normal” and wondered who taught her, it wasn’t passed down, and wondered how she was taught.
