Your foot placement when squatting in a Smith Machine also depends on if it's one of those angled path machines or the completely vertical ones.

I started doing these with one foot up on the bench thanks to John and it has put more meat on my lower body than anything else ever in my life. That being said I'm not a fan of doing one limb at a time and esp legs gets old, so I'm going to start doing the first thing he showed, just a regular squat with legs more out in front. He's right, everyone hates the smith machine and I was one of them. But John changed my mind and opened a whole new world of possibilities up to me with this video.

I’m so glad I found this video because this guy is on point with all the advise he’s giving( may he Rest In Peace) as a woman, I love the smith machine, the very first time I felt my glute muscles during a lunge was on the smith machine. Once I realized that pushing off of the leg in front of me was KEY I feel like the smith machine allowed me to focus on doing the exercise correctly! I can’t understand why the smith machine is disliked! The gym I go to it’s always men trying to rush me off the smith machine. I love lunges on the smith machine because I actually see and feel glute growth since I began really gravitating to the smith machine! His advise is on point!

Miss you John. Hope your family is hanging in there. I always looked at the smith machine as having the ability to “concentrate” more on the targeted muscles as the machine essentially takes away the stabilization part - which means you can use more energy to focus on your targeted muscles
