I've finished your type of leg training about half an hour ago and all I can say is, *it* *works* , *it* *feels* , me and my gym partner we pushed our bodies to the limits. We done stretching between sets if we were too pumped up but in the end, after like 2h .. wow. I even done more on leg press and squats. Thank you sir 💪😊!!! Good workout. Now, I expect soreness for like a week but is fine 😂.

Hey John! This is your old neighbor and fan! This is good stuff! I have a strange problem with squats, and would love to get some feedback. If you have time, read this out some man, would appreciate it. I'm 43, not a big guy, 190lbs. I'm strong in the squat and tend to powerlift. Can do a full squat of maybe 350lbs, and been gear free all my life, and have hit 400lbs before. i'm sort of strong is my point. I'm the business guy who moved to China, talked to you before. Well my best friend here owns one hell of a gear company here in China! Its one of the better known internet companies that offers. they guy has good quality, tested gear. So now that i'm older, and with his guidance, I decided to do my first controlled cycle. Test and Anavar only. And I feel WONDERFUL now, but also have much more motivation in the gym. I think that I have good genes for bodybuilding, and so far I seem to be a hyper responder. My goal was to get strong and rip up some. But i'm responding so well, that I have gained 15 lbs, so I am shifting my thinking into clean bulking on this first cycle. 600mg of test per week, and 50mg of Anavar, prob a bit to much. I'm having issue with leg day, because I go 100%. and I can always seem to push out more reps with squatting. I can rep 350 now, and as soon as I think i'm gassed, I can push more out, so I don't really know when to quit. that's one problem i'm having, i'm being a puss about it. Should I go to failure? and if so, how would you advise I do that? And now for my other more serious interesting problem. I am growing so much, so fast that after leg day, all the muscles in my legs swell to the point that it effects my circulation to my feet some, and messes with my sleep. I feel like I can feel my legs growing man, its crazy! My blood work looks good, kidneys look good. I think its caused from muscle inflammation, After 3 days, i'm fine. Does this seem normal to you? have you ever had this problem? It even fucks with my sleep on leg day.

I follow a few guys on KZbin that I think impart incredible knowledge and seem to be awesome people to boot. Jeff Cavalier and Ryan Humiston immediately come to mind. But you, John, seem to take the cake. This is essentially the next best thing after actually being able to lift in the gym with a professional body builder. The fact that you give this invaluable knowledge for free to anyone willing to listen is testament to your good character. In a field with quite a few folks who make great videos on the subject, I think yours may just be the best. Thank you so much for what you do.

@@mountaindog1 no, thank you for sharing. Timestamping allowed me to digest your programming style, and compare it to my own. I did it for your 3 videos labelled "How hard should you train?". There is no back video, but from the chest one, I can deduce it. There could also be a posterior dominant leg day also, but again, it's easy to imagine how you might build it, given your template structure. I noticed you switch the angle and implement on the presses on chest day, to diminish fatigue carryover from more horizontal pressing to more vertical, and a trick I used to do, as doing 2 consecutive barbell exercises really affects the latter exercise, even if angles vary. The problem i noticed is that eventually, as I get stronger on a lift, exercise induced fatigue also increases, again affecting the latter variation, even if i avoid failure on the first exercise. And so, I decided to give each pressing exercise a day of it's own, and allows for feasible upperdays. I'm much more powerlifting influenced, as far as using accessories and variations to build volume with more reps in the tank, and building up to those money sets you talk about. And so I'll often start off my work sets with a load I can do @3RIR, and even tried @4 ad @5, rather than starting work sets right at @2 or @1. The trick is simply to accrue local fatigue, essentially converting that @4 load to a @2 on the 2nd, or 3rd set or so. The trick is knowing how to modulate rest periods given the proximity to failure. The nearer to failure, the more rest you need to prolongate the amount of sets, essentially normal (powerlifting set rest protocol). The farther away, the shorter the rests need to be to maintain fiber recruitment where you want it, essentially traditional bodybuilding, and includes lighter rest-pause such as myo-reps training. Percentage of 1RM also affects things, where working with loads 80% and higher allows for long rests without fiber recruitment drops during long rests, while working lighter necesitates tighter control to maintain recruitment. I've recently read an article that suggests the top off for hypertrophy outcomes might be as light as 60%, and not surpised as this has been suggested for years, but I guess this might not be universal and explains why some grow well working "light" 60% 1RM, while others need to lift moderately "heavier" with at least 80%1RM. Personally, i think it may come down to not knowing how to accomodate rests to proximity of failure and intensity, and plain laziness. If you really don't know what youre doing, or don't keep time, the best thing you can do is simply lift heavier and rest a lot between sets. Eventually, your joints may pay the price though.

Damn, you uploaded a back video before my back workout and now a leg video before my leg workout. Do you know my schedule? Great videos as always, you’re one of my go to’s when I need some advice. Edit: I love that you include your son in so many videos. Nothing warms my heart like seeing supportive parents.

I learned to start with leg curls from John on T Nation in like 2012. It changed my life. I always start my lying leg curls from resting on my elbow, it gives great hip extension. Then I'll drop down to my chest and grab the handles for the hellride.

Great tips. Specially about the rest duration. While training intense we tend to rush through the sets. Really need to take longer rests about 2-3 mins and than kill it!!

I'm very happy to hear from a pro, that it really takes a different mindset to train legs. For me, I've mostly trained upper body my whole life. But my training partner taught me the way to do legs. And I was always going for it even the pain and exhaustion is quite greater. Still, I didn't have courage to go through the program by myself. I needed my training partner's motivation and co-suffering being able to train legs. But just in recent 6 months, I've been able to train legs very hard myself alone. Maybe the pain tolerance fixed abit and the courage also rose to needing level. So I tell from experience also, it really is compeletely different situation for required mindset, to go for legs. So thank you, John. It's always nice to have honest, and neutral speak, through experience. Thumbs up big time! 👍
