Will power raking tear up St Augustine? And any easy steps to kill off Dallis Grass?
@alonso68joe1 Жыл бұрын
@@mannieyoung5477 I actually do this every year on my St. Augustine grass. I found out one thing, is better to get a bagger lawn mower. I have a regular lawn mower and the amount of thatch I pick up on a pass is absurd. I've picked up 10 bags worth of thatch. I usually do it early spring, but this year I did it about a week ago since I did it last fall, and didn't think I need it to dethatch, was I wrong. Grass was growing thick and healthy, then a couple of months later I started to notice light green spots and yellowish and brown spots on grass blades. It had a fungal infection caused by the insane amount of thatch. I spent close to 10 hours dethatching and cleaning up. The moral of the story is, make sure to have a bagger lawn mower to cut your grass. That way you don't have so much thatch to pick up!

I removed the thatch from our yard (using a metal rake only) in Houston because the grass just would not grow and it was getting over grown with weeds. I spend weeks digging out weeds and raking thatch. 13 trash bags later....all clear. Added fertilizer (Nitrophos) and the grass started growing like gangbusters! Ahh the power rake, wonderful invention. It's also great for getting rid of moss, which I spent doing for three weeks this spring for clients. Needless to say, two passes don't always get the job done! If only these things were self propelled! We found that using a blower, for larger lawns, can really help get out that deep stuff that the power rake has pulled up (front and back were each 20-30 40gallon bags of moss!). You know you're pushing too hard if the machine is grabbing as you go, but on large estate lawns getting it done at one setting without that happening is almost hopeless.

It varies, general ph range is 7 to 7.5. It can affect the grass but it's mostly due to the water treatment in certain areas
@Michael_Livingstone5 жыл бұрын
@@pestandlawnginja What about the calcium and magnesium content of the water? My water supply comes straight off the Rockies, down a river and through a treatment plant hence the hardness. I should actually have a water softener in my house.

Ginja, you magnificent bastard. This video is exactly what I needed because this is the EXACT situation I have in my lawn. You’re a bearded god send. I’m on the south shore of Long Island in NY and I’m noticing that I’ve got that brownish tinge to my lawn where as everyone else is greening up nicely. I have the green works de thatcher. I’m going to use that and then buy a hand thatch rake and really crush this problem. My only question is if this will effect my pre emergent (prodiamine) I threw down? Should till my brown areas after and over seed, then hit it with some tenacity? I’ve got a mix of rye and fescue. PS, you’re slowly becoming my go to. I appreciate when you said you don’t “spray and pray”... what a burn, lol.
@pestandlawnginja5 жыл бұрын
😂😂😂 best comment of the week. If you have the same problem as in the video and end up doing the power rake it will disrupt the pre emergent. If you're going to over seed I would suggest lawn aeration then put the seed down. I'd run the aerator 2 to 3 passes. Get the best seed to soil contact. Works great!

Nice job airing out that lawn. I found that the Bluebird self propels as it churns up the thatch, buried gumballs, pine cones, twigs, and so many things you had no idea were buried in the lawn. It does an excellent job. I am about to try for the first time dethatching my Zoysia. Its naturally dense but it has stopped reproducing and I am fighting moss and fungus now. My co-op said don't dethatch until it is fully growing, which means June here in Md. I didn't think to inquire about special nutrients after beating up the lawn, so thanks for mentioning that. Mr. Ginja, please try the Greenworks Dethatcher. It is a cheap unit, but it does better than the commercial units. The tines are small and scrapes the lawn vs digging into it. Using a dethatcher rake afterwards is pointless because this thing gets all the dead grass. In this case, cheap is better.

Nice job. Hard work, I know. I prefer to mow with a bag instead of raking. You're right, the mower bags are smaller these days it seems. So every couple of passes I just dump the debris in chosen spots in the yard and keep going. This way it's less tedious for me and when done, pick up and bag all the debris at one time. Any loose residual I lightly rake or use a blower. I guess it boils down to whatever method works best for the homeowner, not to mention age too. One thing's for sure, you'll shed some pounds in the process. Thanks for sharing. ~Mike

I always found additional hand raking was necessary. I start with a good variable-spacing wire rake. The wire gauge would be sbout 16 or 14 AWG. Mine is chrome plated tough steel. This doesn't pick up much at all, but it aligns the junk so a sawtooth rake can pile it up without pulling up the live grass. If I used the sawtooth rake alone, it would pull up lots of good live grass. Just a little trick I picked up over the years.

I love the power dethatcher made by sun joe. You could use it every week if you wanted and it doesn't get horribly invasive. does a great job removing debris.

Thankyou from the information. Lol try to use a push mower on a 1 acre property. I purchased a power rake blade. Little by little come back. 5 year ago my lawn was so freaking thick. One pass the bag was full. Iam thinking about redo the whole property over because of the crabgrass.

Quick tips.... get spring tines put onto your thatcher... way better then flail blades!!! Next you can either use the mower as a vacuum or use a blower and blow it into piles.... the blower will get more out for you then even a rake. Specially if you have a good backpack! Work smarter not harder....

I read a book on lawn care many years ago. Jerry Baker's book. He recommended adding beer and/or cola to a lawn sprayer to help those microbes eat the thatch.

my lawn is garbage, so I decided to do something to it, last season I de-thatched the entire thing by hand (it sucked hard btw), 6 lowes paper bags 2 days and plenty of blisters on my hands my lawn is still garbage ... but its getting better as its went from mostly clover to mostly fescue since last fall I dont think anyone has done work to the lawn since the house was built in 1992 and we moved in in 2016 lol

So I have about a full acre (not all square or flat either). I use a riding Lawn/ Garden tractor for mowing (incl the additional acre or so). My yard is basically a field when considering what I'm starting with here. Do you think I'll get reasonable results with a tow behind tine de-thatcher which can be weighted down? Understandably not the same results as the power rake, but reasonable results? (1095ft elevation)
@pestandlawnginja5 жыл бұрын
Personally I feel the front end tune dethatcher works better. You can bag immediately as well.

I've watched a few of your videos as I am new to the area and also owning a lawn that I must maintain myself. As you showed the lawn I thought "Yup, mine looks just like that." Then you panned the camera and I saw the mountain and thought "Hey, that looks like my mountain." After checking a few of your links I discover you are very close by. I am however a bit further up the Wasatch in the Clearfield/Layton area which is sadly out of your service area. Thank you though for providing tips and ideas of ways to make my lawn look its best!

You are stronger than me. I just set it 4 and ended up with mostly bare lawn. But Bermuda responded very well. It's 90% filled in now. Also I aerated (belt and suspenders) and left the cores on the lawn. It responded very well. I have that same tool and have used it but the layers was out of control for a hand tool and it was a backbreaker job to try and do it that way. Good video. Thank you.
@pestandlawnginja5 жыл бұрын
I've heard you can beat Bermuda up pretty good. Kbg doesnt respond as well. Wish it would. The process is a game changer for sure.

Pest and Lawn Ginja, your content is far beyond my expectations, and my level of comprehension. My clients are more rural, do not want a perfect lawn, but I do want to learn to do the kind of work that you do. I will work on it for several years until I can call my self a pro. You make it look easy, but your explanations do humble me, and encourage me to focus up your videos for a long time. Thanks, brother.

Would like to have that golf course look myself , have Bermuda sod here in Arkansas . Question I haven't dethatched or aerated in a couple of years and I do mulch and cut my grass at 3 and 1/2" tall . Also use the Gator blades on the rider mower too . I have my automatic sprinkler system watering at 3:00 am three days a week at three stages are set at 30 minutes each . Anything off hand you think I need to do - you think it's time to aerate and Dethatch ???????
@pestandlawnginja5 жыл бұрын
depends if the mulch is breaking down. The gator blades do a phenomenal job at cutting the grass into fine enough bits. If your color is lacking check the debris levels by doing a pinch test. Part the grass as if you were parting your hair and see how much debris there really is. Just keep in mind you want to power rake during the growing season for bermuda, spring is best IMO. You'll also want to use a flail based power rake for bermuda
