Thank you for getting back to me. I have watched you use last year using the electric dethacher, but I a almost a 1/2 lot and that small unit will take forever. So, would be best to rent a power rack or find someone to do it? Finally, whats the best weed killer for my rock beds that also can work as a pre emergent? No weeds yet so something that works with no weeds exposed yet and with weeds exposed. THANK YOU!

I’m someone who recently became obsessed with lawn care after only mowing a lawn less than a handful of times in my 34 years. Now I’m watching all your videos on KZbin and am about to spend all this money on a Sun Joe when I didn’t even know what thatch was 2 weeks ago. I raked my yard with a groundskeeper II rake and although an awesome rake for the job I should’ve just bought the machine now that I know I can thatch regularly and not just once every year or two like I previously thought! P.S. that dog is freaking adorable 😍

Ginja, I know that would be a different type of video but could you do a video that shows a list or schedule what you need to do for lawn care from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Listing the different products to use through the season. I am new to the lawn care game, and just bought a new house this year and it had new laid sod this spring. Any help you can give I would truly appreciate it. Thank you and keep up the great work,

@@pestandlawnginja Thank you for the reply truly appreciate it. If the video comes out, I hope it helps new homeowners. So I live in a little bit of a different area than you, the Kansas City area. With new sod, what are some of the thing you should and shouldn’t do the first year? You can research so much online your head spins and no way of telling what is right. Honestly some people are just keyboard warriors. I’m not afraid to work I just need to know that I’m going in the right direction. I plan on hand raking the whole yard “maybe buying a Sun Joe” to remove thatch and any debris that occurred from the lawn being laid down and the little bit of dead stand. What else can I do the help the yard besides water it? Any advice would be great. Thank you again,

@@golfandstuff2659 I think the only distributor in the us is Reel Rollers. That's where I bought mine thru. I do know that the COVID-19 Pandemic has affected everyone globally and products coming from the Europe have been very slow. I accidentally damaged my reel and ended up buying the new upgrade reel and I will have the old one be a spare. You can try calling Swardman in Germany and they may be able to help. They do speak English just be patient in communicating. Also the European folks are on vacation now. 8 weeks, July and August, seem to be the most difficult times in getting anything out of Europe, has been my biggest issue. So you might not have much choice, but call then directly and see what can be done would be my best advise.

Last week I cut it down to 2" and spent yesterday dethatching it - I got probably 20 garbage cans of material. I was surprised how 'non-abusive' the dethatching process was. I use a Brinly Hardy dethatcher. They do work well if the adjustments and angles of the springs are set correct. (The springs are actually supposed to pop forward and toss thatch forward). I have had great success with 4 passes of the tow behind type. Two perpendicular to the others. Good luck.

they work great. they're more invasive on the plant and soil so recovery will be longer. I recommend spring when the grass starts growing vigerously or late summer / fall when temps begin to cool down.

My lawn is about 9500sqft, and I only did half of it (I'm experimenting to dial my treatment in before doing the 2nd half), but I filled up 2 green waste containers along with tamping the thatch down after every dump into the container. I just ordered a Sun Joe. Was going to wait for the fall and then next spring to dethatch. Ironically about 3 weeks ago I just dethatched a small test patch by hand with a garden rake. Put down Humic Acid, Biochar, and sea kelp, and a little iron. 3 weeks later the little test patch is the best part of my lawn. And... my greenskeeper friend told me NOT to dethatch!!! Thank you for the videos.
@TheEthanHunt4 жыл бұрын
If you don’t mind me asking, did you get the iron separately? How did you measure how much was needed for the test patch? Lastly, is it ok to add iron towards the end of July/early August (DFW area, so it’s HOT!)
@anthonybruce34824 жыл бұрын
@@TheEthanHunt Yes - so I use a very minimal amount. about 3% liquid iron. for a 16oz spray bottle less than an 1oz. During the hot weather it's important to "spoon feed" small amounts of the nutrients about every 14 days. That's what I've learned and had success with. The commercial lawn services dump huge amounts of products and hope they last 6 weeks. The biggest difference for me is that I'm using small amounts more frequently (again spoon feeding) because I'm a DIY now.

I just followed the instructions on the label. The labels will commonly tell you the rates per 1000 sq ft. once you get calibrated with your equipment it's pretty easy to run and gun. You can put iron down anytime when the grass is growing.

I also took fotos because I was shocked how much stuff it pulled out. you want to mix the herbicides for what you use. they will last a few weeks but slowly weaken. you need to decides if you're going to apply the herbicides over the entire area or spot spray. I commonly apply the herbicides over the entire area when the weeds are really bad. I will do that every 4 weeks for 3 to 4 months for the first season then re evaluate the season after. As for the milo..... that can go down anytime. If you don't have annual grasses to treat you do not need to add the quinclorac

I just did mine yesterday. I am just under my first year of taking back my lawn. I have overseeded and still have a bit of starter fert that is finally dying out. We were blessed with a "second spring" of cool wet weather so I overseeded and did the starter fert a month ago. I needed to fill in the patchy lawn and I am almost there. Two month ago there were gaps everywhere. I bought a sprayer and dusted the lawn for weeds which did a great job. Then I noticed the grass clippings were starting to pile up from the fast growing grass and frequent mowing. It was causing issues as it piled up where the dead weeds were. So I dethatched and switched to bagging. Now it's time to lay down some fert with iron. It has only tapped 95 degrees for about 5 days up here in Canada and that was only for a few hours a day on those random days. Currently 62 degrees and raining on Monday. Lawn will be green(er) by mid to late week.

I did 2 test patches on my bermuda using my sunjoe. I did a 1250* using the scarifier and it really chewed up the lawn. I then did a 1500* using the dethatcher and it looks 10x better. I’m going to finish the rest of the 8000* on the dethatch cartridge. I put down milorganite after and have been watering it in. It’s been about 4 days and the scarifier is Slowly coming back, but after just a day the dethatch area is looking way cleaner. Thanks for the content, my lawn use to look like a golf course but I’ve neglected it for the past 2 years and it shows. P.S. it’s about 105* in Georgia with the heat index, so you can do it if you put in the work.

Great feedback! The scarifier should be used just like a verticutter. works fantastic in the spring time. needs a little time to bounce back! Thanks for sharing.
@NL1T3N4 жыл бұрын
@@pestandlawnginja i had a ton of debris on top (2 years of side discharge on the zero turn) so i was hoping that the scarifier would give me sufficient slices to help the bermuda breath during the super high temps and get the fertilizer deep into the soil, but it just chewed up way to much for my liking. I'm going to run it again in the spring as the temps start getting up, and i'm going to plug next year as well, as i didn't do it this year. I also bought a honda push and have been bagging it this year, which has helped a ton. 8k square feet and i have about a full wheel barrow full of grass every cut (1.5") so that helps a ton now as well. thanks for the reply!!

In my opinion it depends on the grass type and geographical location. In southeast VA with cool season turf (tall fescue) if you dethatch when it’s 90 degrees and dry, your lawn will be damaged. Even mowing in the heat will damage the grass. Which is fine if you don’t mind it looking that way until fall overseeding. I’ve never had to dethatch warm season turf because it bounces back on its own so easily with enough rain.

Any thoughts regarding why it requires so many passes to get it properly done? Ginja do you think maybe doing it once a month would be ideal instead of doing 4 or so passes each session?
@pestandlawnginja2 жыл бұрын
The dead materials get melded into the soil. Takes time to get it all out. If you can do 4 passes and cleanup 4 days in a row when you first begin that’s preferred

Great info. I run a dethatcher and core aerator every four (4) weeks. 1+ rural acre. I leave the debris to dry out topside for a few hours, then dbl cut the lawn. I see more benefit to leaving it, than removing it. I'm located in eastern Canada so my weed control 'options' are pretty much nil, or illegal. This has become a huge part of my IPM.

Greenworks dethatcher is pretty decent. Did mine on a 106°F day. Very hot. Lawn was good to go after milorganite and Scott's summer guard and three days. I didn't start until the end of spring with a 30% or a bit better. Waiting on fall to get topsoil and level then seed work KBG and Tttfescue. My ground is as hard as nails. I've been aerating but am going to have to use some liquid aerator to help me out. Most of my topsoil has eroded away. I've got a real mess but am following you to get it looking better. I de thatched two weeks ago. I purposely did not water for a week to make sure it was extra dry. I am changing up grass types so I went hard on detaching/power raking. Took out two large garbage cans of degree. I over seeded after and the seed was well covered by all the racking marks. Worked out perfect. Only issue now is keeping up with water in the extreme heat. It hasn’t been too bad. I already have about 1/3 of an inch of new growth.

recovery can be difficult if you go to agressive. that's why its important to set the proper height of the machine.

Ginja! I’ve been following all of your tips and my lawn started looking nice! I posted a few pics on face book and got a few people asking me to fix their lawns. First guy I checked out needed dethatch tenacity treatment overseed plus top soil and Pete moss application. Yard is about 3,000 square feet total. How much should I charge?!? Lol I think you might have helped me start a lawn care business!
@pestandlawnginja3 жыл бұрын
Awesome Aaron! The dethatch alone I would charge $400. I would charge $65 for the tenacity treatment and explain the risks of bleaching. The seed is a tough one, the peat isn't too expensive but you'll need 3 or 4 bails to do it right at $20 each and the seed price will depend on what seed you buy. I try and shoot for a profit of $150 per hour and then the cost of the materials.

I have a LOT of thatch on my lawn. Its so bad that the lawn is already struggling and it's the start of summer. The sad part is that I already removed 23, 42 gallon bags of thatch in the Spring. Closer to the end of summer I'll go really aggressive with the dethatching and then follow up with core aeration. I have been guilty of leaving the grass too long when the ground freezes in winter. I'll cut it much lower this year. I am going to estimate that I'll have about 50+ bags of thatch when I'm done. I am not looking forward to it.
@pestandlawnginja3 жыл бұрын
run into that all the time. once you get on top of it and do the thatching a couple times a year or more it gets much easier.

So the biggest question I have is can you de-thatch St. Augustine grass? Been trying to see videos to determine the type of grass but that's my one unanswered question. This was awesome to see!
@pestandlawnginja3 жыл бұрын
you can. most people have a company to dethatch. few other tools that work. this machine does well but you have to play with the adjustments. if you go too low you will hit the stolons of the grass which in return will bind in the barrel of the machine.
