I'd like to add some advice for the people still learning. The jump is a completely separate motion than the pop/slide. A lot of times, people will try to jump and smack the tail at the same time. You have to jump first and get your body's momentum going upwards, and then as you feel your weight starting to come off the board and your knees begin to extend, THEN you smack/slide and bring your legs up to bring the board up. You don't go up with the board at the same time, your body goes up and THEN you make the board follow it. Watch him ollie, and press the back arrow and replay it quickly over and over. Watch his body and you'll notice that he's on an upward trajectory before the the snap happens. Part of it is timing and the other part is keeping your weight centered/balanced as you're jumping.

I know this video is way too old for anyone to even see it, but I am 28 years old, and I am suffering from depression after I move out. I have problems for fall sleep. And today my woman gave me one skateboard. Well I promissed her to give it a go, and I landed my first shove it in my first day. Thanks to you my dude. Sorry my alkward gramar, Inglish is not my native tongue. Huge thanks from a nobody from the south of Brazil. You guys are more than just my inspiration. My dream now is to one day travel to U.S. and at least give a look at the Braille house. Thank you again for what you give me and to the community. (I will start saving my money for the trip, I need to do that one day :)).
@walmartian

it cures depression from a combination of intense focusing on the present moment, there is no past or future when skating your hardest because the present moment is so important right then, if you lose focus you could receive injury which in return is kicking in adrenaline. this is the basic definition of meditation- an intense focus on the present moment, your brain simply has no capacity at that moment for depression or anxiety. the other factor is your body is being flooded with endorphines and adrenaline from a physical activity which is the highest you can possibly get, seems like that repairs neurons in some way making anxiety go away. the factor is its a very high cardio work out, it pushes toxins out of you. when i was skating my hardest every day i had a resting heart rate of 45bpm, which is marathon runner health.

I’m 28 too but started skating around 22-23 I forgot what exact age. When I first started me and my boys goofed around and didn’t take it as seriously. When I loss those friends and it was just me and my board, that’s when I started to really skateboard. No one pushing you or motivating you. That’s when you want to really become real with the skateboard or give it up.

How to Ollie when you're 25 and haven't been active for years: Step 1: Keep your board in your trunk Step 2: Glance at the skatepark as you drive by on the way home every day Step 3: Actually go to the skate park, ride around a bit and feel that skate vibe. Get inspired by those around you. Step 4: Do what this video says. Step 5: Repeat 1-4 and watch your lost confidence build slowly.

The Ollie was created by Alan "Ollie" Gelfand in 1978 (Ollie was his nick name and he was primarily a VERT skater.) In 1982, while competing in the Rusty Harris contest in Whittier, California, Rodney Mullen debuted an ollie on flat ground, which he had adapted from Gelfand's vertical version by combing the motions of some of his existing tricks. (Free-stylist turned street) In 1987, Natas Kaupas had his debut role in the Santa Cruz skateboarding video, (Wheels of Fire). In the film, Kaupas displayed an ability to ollie which far surpassed anyone else, and his part is considered to have paved the way for the new direction of skateboarding. (100% street) And these are just a few of the Pioneers who contributed to Modern day skateboarding.

Here are some main reasons why people cant ollie. 1.They are not jumping off their back foot 2.They don't move their back foot to the back of the board 3.The timing is off (i found that you have to pop and then slide your foot up while your back foot is off the board) Bonus Tip: To practice without falling on the concrete, place half of your board on the ground on the concrete, and half on the grass. This will keep it from rolling, but you still get the good pippity pop.

Just watched your whole "you make it we ride is" series, i'm 30 and have never really skateboarded but you guys inspire me to get get into skateboarding, i'm considering getting a cruiser to mess around with in the city. At most i want to get some nice ollies and shuvits and possibly a kickflip every now and then. Keep up the great work, you make skating fun and accessible :)
@mysterion12345
@mysterion12345 8 жыл бұрын
LogicalMayhem00 I suggest to get a normal but good (I mean slightly expensive) normal wheeled board first, go into the skate shop ask around, they know their shit, I promise. if you want a cruiser board too pick up a penny board (they're cheap as usually €25-40) penny boards mightn't look too snazzy but they are great for cruising. if you get a cruise board first its hard to learn the basics off of it :'D and once you've skated for even a month or so, I advise learning how to set up your own board, the engineering of a board can teach you so much about skating

I've been watching yall's videos for a while now and I finally bought an actual deck. It might still have the cruiser wheels and riser pads, but I now Ollie over everything in the city. Thank you guys so much for your comprehensive tutorials and truly simplified instructions! I can't wait till more people ride!

These tips are perfect! I had pretty much given up ever learning to ollie. I bought my first board since being a teenager, slapped on the skater trainers and followed your steps. In 5 minutes I was hearing a nice pop and with 30 minutes I had taken off the skater trainers and was doing Ollies!!! Doing them while riding is my next goal but I am feeling great! Thank you!!!

+Slap_Aguirre Tell yourself "I'm going to Ollie" when you go for the Ollie. Picture what the Ollie looks like in your mind and focus on that as you go for the Ollie. With the timing, it takes practice. You want to slide your foot up at an angle at the very precise moment you pop the tail of your skateboard on the concrete. As you are sliding your foot at an angle up the nose, lift your back foot up in the air. When I Ollie, I also think about bringing my knees up to my chest. But anyways, I hope this helped if you're still having trouble with ollies. You'll get it down dude!

2:16 hear hear - one of the biggest myths in skateboarding is that you need to kick your tail down with all the muscle you've got, as if you're trying to stomp a crack in the pavement. Brute force isn't going to get your ollie very high at all if you don't understand what you're trying to do. Just like scraping your front foot along the grip in itself isn't going to level out the board very well unless you learn how to 'hook' the rubber of your shoe sole on the grip far up the nose, allowing you to leverage the tail end of the board up. I mean if it were all about 'sliding' the side of your shoe along the board, wouldn't it make more sense not to have griptape, so as to make the slide as smooth as possible? No, because the resistance of rubber on sand paper is what allows you to control the board with your feet.

Thank you thank you thank you for that slow-mo shot near the end! I used to have a pretty good ollie, 2 feet or so in height, but that was 30 years ago. Now I suck, but you just showed me why! In my decades off, I forgot when to pop. I've been trying to pop as I'm jumping, but your pop doesn't even begin until your legs are almost completely straightened out. That helps you not pin the tail down on the ground when it needs to be popping up. Can't wait to try fixing this...

But... you DO NEED to jump to ollie. And a lot of ollie tutorials fail at letting you know that, yours included... Begginers try and try and try that two motions without jumping at the same time, and they don't understand why they don't leave the ground... And comparing jumping on the middle of the board with the proper ollie is nonsense. You jump with your back leg, but jump all the same.

Thanks so much! This video got me from my first ollie (you can see it on my channel) to my highest ollie (also on my channel) in a short period of time! The part where it says not to pop as hard as you can helped me. Also the emphasis on pushing your foot forward while sliding helped me a lot. You really got me into skating from not even caring for skating about 2 years ago to loving skateboarding!

how to ollie: jump at 7:32 set the speed to 0.25 and press space bar to stop motion the video. Look your feet position on the board before the jump, jump sequence (notice that he pops right after his jump propulsion, so there is no weight on the board) , pop(quickly push/ kick down with your rear foot without touching the ground with your foot ). When the board is in the air drag the board forward with the front foot , the rear foot just follows the board ascend speed plus a little forward motion, stop the board from moving forward with your rear foot pushing it down and backward ( shortly sliding the rear foot toward the tail, the movement should come natural when you just push down) while returning to your original position. I don't even own a skateboard :).
