One thing that I’ve found very helpful is to go find live performances and watch exactly how the performer plays the song…especially on bass. That way, you’ll learn to play it the same way, in the same positions, as the original artist plays it. That has really helped me a lot.

I have been slowly learning every bass line on Black Sabbath Mob rules. The bass on that album is gigantic. I won't say that I don't kick start my learning with a few videos here and there though but it all ends up falling into place as I play. All those days of rewinding tapes to learn the song have paid off.

When it comes to learning songs you don't like, for instance learning a set list for a gig, I have found that pairing it with a song that I do like helps a ton. I learn a section of the song I don't enjoy, then bounce over to learn a section of new song I like, or jam on a couple tunes I already know and love. It's not so bad when I go back to the monotony of learning the other song. We'll never like every song on a set list, but when you're hired at a club it's all about what gets the people in the crowd going, not us musicians.

You’ve said good words to listen to…all true… I started learning guitar first but late almost 4 years ago at age 58. Steady progress every day, but like you said “you don’t know what you don’t know” Like a kid in a car on a long trip I kept asking myself “are we there yet?” Well it is the journey not the destination, remember to always have forward motion, stop if you must but not for long, stop for a moment before you go backwards and then forward again. I started learning bass only a few months ago, progress every day and no, we are not there yet, thank god for the journey. I like it heavy and this channel is wicked! Thanks for all the help with my Bass endeavours. I practice every day I can, 10 minutes or 10 hours but every freaking day I can. I’ve missed only a handful of days each year.

Great tips. I'm finding at the moment that choosing the right song is really difficult. Getting well in to a song then suddenly hitting a section I just can't get through. Is there any possibility of doing a video on GNT by Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs?

This happens a lot, and learning a song from start to finish can be a challenge. Sometimes it’s worth the time to woodshed the part and sometimes it can be best to move on and come back to it later. GNT is great and will definitely put it on the list of lessons to be made🤜🤛🤘

1 st practice, as much as possible to get the fingers and brains on the same page. i waited till in my 50s to play again, i did in my teens,. that was a long time back. now the bass has a wider string space. thinking i could fall right in. NO! my fingers was like when i started. in my teens. pick a simple song to start with. 7 nation army for example. now i am 59 and play along with his videos in 4 years of playing. just do not beat your head against the wall if you are having a hard time. move to another song. please will be your boost youreggo,so now you think and know you can play the bass., also make you comfy with it. 2 amps and 5 bass sitting here as i type. hartkehd150 and peavey 2x8 for practice amp. even some punk rock is straight forward and easy just fast is all. you can go to there when your ready. i did 7 nation army and tennesse whiskey was a slower BPM . an i dea.,.Good Luck!!!
