Thanks for sharing! I grow in the ground, raised beds and containers. I'm hoping to slowly begin growing 1 1/2 acres by 2020 (our whole grass yard area). Right now in total I'm probably a little more than 1/2 an acre.

betsy214 I would just remove any larger pieces you can get from the top and put maybe 2 inches of new soil on top (don't mix) and landscape fabric on top of that. That should keep the cats out and keep anything from splashing up on your edibles. Or you can just use the fabric and plant flowers. Hope that helps!

I Found this comment on another site that might be helpful to you since I have never had any experience of cats using my Raised beds as a litter box…Lots of animals use garden beds as "litter boxes" not to mention all the normal bacteria found in soil. So assuming you practice good garden hygiene and properly wash and/or cook all garden vegetables before consuming, then all you need to do is till or turn the soil well before planting.Mixing in a good dose of quality compost prior to planting provides additional beneficial bacteria that can help eliminate many garden pathogens.
