A tip from another Gardner: use straw mulch. When I made my buckets, I put in first rocks so the drainage holes would never get clogged, then straw because it absorbs water like the clay pots that the plants can then use again-and as the season continues it breaks down and fertilizes the plants. Fill your bucket with soil and plant your plant, then put a good layer of the straw on top too. The light color of straw reflects the sun away from the soil and up to the actual plants giving them a boost while not letting the soil dry up as quickly. We did this in our big containers and they went from nearly having to be watered every day to around once a week.

I use 1/2 food grade 55gal drums. Holes 4" up on the sides and about 1/3 bale straw in the bottom. Then my soil mix. Grass clippings on top for mulch. I also use a good dose of my vermicompost. A few worms always find their way into the containers a big bonus for eating clippings and making a natural fertilizer.

A garden is hope. We plant in the hope of plant rising, that our hands, our work, will nourish us. When my son died I gardened. When I had cancer I gardened. I just had some side effects of bc treatment and developed hemiplegia…yes, I am gardening. Allowing our grief to be nourished and released into the soil is a gift from nature. I named a tree after my son…and planted round vegetables in memory of my breast. Silly but soothing. May you allow yourself to go through this journey. Tears have nourished my garden and when I see peppers grow they remind me that sometimes it is painful…when I taste a succulent apricot I’m reminded there are moments of sweetness…among the bitter greens I’m reminded of life…when the seasons change I know the rhythm of my heart can deal with all of it. May your journey be sweet..even in prickly moments. ❤

Thank you for the tips! My husband and I have been container gardening for over 5 years now. Our soil is awful! Lots of clay, and if you dig down more than 1 foot, you start getting brackish water. We live not far from the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This year, we expanded our garden by 522 sq. Feet. We have a large back yard and use different tubs and buckets, making sure that they are food grade. We are growing corn, tomatoes, sweet banana peppers, orange bell peppers, lots of herbs, flowers, sunflowers, and I have two bee houses for leafcutters. James: I grow only in buckets and bins on my condo concrete patio. I put the holes on the sides... 3/4 of an inch from the bottom. That leaves a bit of a water reservoir , preventing dry outs (in Southern California) and allows you to direct any over flow from rotting your wooden shelves underneath the pots. That works for me... just sharing. ;) And Thanks for doing some container gardening. Some of my buckets are on metal shelving with casters ... so i can pivot them for sun exposure now and then.

I just started gardening at the beginning of the year 2022, I had bad luck from the start w/seedlings. But I did not give up, took me about 3 tries, mean while I got on KZbin, for ideas, and I wrote down my notes each time I had to start over. I finally learned how to prepare my soil and get some of my seedlings to sprout. Today, I got a storage container w/a lid, and I used my heating element to make holes on the lid of the container. I then sifted the potting mix that I bought & enriched it w/a formula from KZbin, and I have to say that the sifting really did make a huge difference in the end result. I also made up my mind not to buy seeds from any Hardware stores, such as Lowes or Home Depot. Good Lucky to all. Thank You...

Thanks for this video. Soil is so expensive to buy or make. I only use about 8 inches of soil depth in my buckets. I fill the bottom with wood chips / mulch which you can get for free. For buckets, I learned that Firehouse Subs sells their used pickle buckets for $2 each. If you are in Canada, the 5G buckets at Canadian Tire are also food grade. Also, if you plan on growing tomatoes, pick varieties that are less prone to blossom end rot. I have tomatoes in 5G buckets (self-irrigating) and 20G fabric pots and BER is a problem on a couple of them.
@fldesigner50473 жыл бұрын
BER is from lack of calcium. I save my egg shells & dry them in my dehydrator. You can dry them in your oven too, just keep an eye out so they don't burn. After drying, I crush them into powder in a coffee/spice grinder. I sprinkle the calcium powder in the soil when I plant my tomatoes. Never have issues with BER.

Hi James. I've found that vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers growing in 5 gallon pails can divert a good downpour of rain out and beyond the rim of their pail, keeping their soil relatively dry! This "canopy drip-line" can also apply to large-leafed vegetables growing up a trellis in a raised bed. It occurs whenever the plants' leaves divert the falling rain beyond the limits of the soil, in which they grow .. like in pails, planters, raised beds.

I understand the white pots breakdown faster from the sun. What good are the holes on the bottom when no air or water can get through the bottom when the pot is sitting on a board. We cut triangular holes on the side of the bottom too.

I only have a deck, so i do container gardening. I got excited when you said you were growing watermelon (I'm doing the same), and also when i saw how you were making your soil (I do the same thing), then when you showed the Miracle Grow perlite bag, I said 'Oh No'. I have the exact same bag. Oh well. Lesson learned. I won't do that next year. 😀 I've also got jalapeno peppers, mini bell peppers, collard greens, and herbs (oregano, sage, basil). I also have flowers. I'm not really expecting to get a full watermelon, but I want to see how far I get. I also love your small tips. Use 5 gallon buckets, put drainage holes in them, use the handle, and filling them where they're going to rest. I love clay pots, but you're correct, they are heavy. Love your channel.

I'm finding it really difficult to start basil from seeds. I get TONS of baby sprouts. The problem starts when transplanting the baby basil sprouts into containers 🤦

You can get a full watermelon. I've seen other people grow them in pots on KZbin. Look it up and see. I am going to try it too. My watermelon just germinated.

I LOVE this video! I binge watch your videos all year long (winter get very long in Minnesota) for fun. Now it's spring-a very cold spring for us-and this video just gave me some hope for my new garden year. I can't wait to start adding this to my yard to give me even more garden areas!

I always grow my peppers and tomatoes in pots in my home made compost, always with great results! Don't have enough space to plant them out in the garden because of other crops. This year I'm doing the same thing but using plastic food crates, lined with polythene and holes punched in the bottom. First time try and have got melons and cucumbers planted in them. Wasn't sure how things would turn out but yes, its working, Melon's growing berserk and can't keep up with the cucumbers, I am beginning to look a lot like one! Always look forward to your videos James, thanks for your inspiration and tips, I am always learning something new from you and Tuck!

This is by far the best video on creating your own potting soil. You add the science and chemistry information that is critical for success. THANKS

I tried buckets and my tomato plants got root bound, so I use 10 gallon grow bags now and the roots "air prune" and grow much better.

I used a similar mixture to plant up a banana plant, but I added some composed manure and worm castings. It works great and the plant is growing great.

I loved this! First time gardener in zone 6A. Upstate NY. I’m growing in containers and considering moving to a raised bed, however, I like the convenience of containers. This video sealed my deal!! For now I’m sticking w containers and will look into creating levels. This video was excellent!!

Thank you James, great tips... I have been growing plants in containers but some of them don't grow as good as yours. I need to learn more from you. Thank you for sharing. Love your channel👍👍👍 big fat thumbs up as always.

I love the tip about the blocks and wood. Also, you just cleared up something I was researching yesterday - situating taller plants on the north side & shorter plants on the south. Thanks for that! It was very timely that that little tidbit came up at the end of this video. 😊

Respect Gromie! I'd also reccomend living soil+knf (at least indigenous microorganisms). I cut right at the base at the end of the year then plant right beside it next year. The root system works as a nutrient holding buffet for the next plant. 😎

I love your channel immensely! I just watched your video about using plastic storage totes to grow veggies. I already have 2 and made sure they were food safe. I have a ton of pots. My garden is going to be mostly containers but I'm planting strawberries in-ground. You da man, James!

The one problem we always have with potted plants is the dirt eventually dries out in the summer heat and just pouring water in doesn't solve the prob for long. So we use a big tub filled with water and put the whole planter bucket ( not the plant) under water with a brick and let it hydrate for about an hour and rotate them as we work .
@Moon..Shadow2 жыл бұрын
The soil should never be allowed to dry out as it kills the microbes and worms (if there's any in the pot) No offense meant, but new growers need to know this. Happy gardening!
@velboyd5483 Жыл бұрын
I would suggest a low level passive drip system. You can add liquid feed that way as well when you want. Or, as another comentor posted, a wick water reservoir. Say a solid bucket with rocks for weight and elevation under the potted bucket, for example. Mulch the tops as well. Add in more moisture retaining materials as needed if you can.

I have lots of raised beds but i also have containers on our deck. This morning i picked over 2 and a half kg of veg including cucumbers, big tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, beans, and celery. I also have lots of herbs, lettuce, golden nugget pumpkins and a nice big watermelon growing. I am in the southern hemisphere but i get lots of inspo from your channel, thankyou.
