Females with undiagnosed autism can often exhibit quite subtle traits growing up (and carry them over to adulthood) that can easily be mistaken for something else. So I wanted to share some of these from my own personal experience, in the hopes it could help someone else :)

It’s hard never being able to realize people are making fun or being passive aggressive.

Yess!! I know. So you end up either laughing when noone else does, because you think it's a joke, or just looking confused and everyone looks at you weird 🤦‍♀

I can often detect passive aggression (I’m guilty of it, too, but I try hard to avoid it), but I’ve often missed ‘jokes’ where the other person seemed serious, but they had to literally tell me they were joking. Same with pretend crying, which I loathe unless it’s obviously a joke. It’s exhausting sometimes.

Let me know if any of this resonated with you!! I honestly thought for so long that it was just me and I was a weirdo. But I'm learning that there are so many others, and it's amazing to share experiences ❤

There is a lot more social norms and expectations placed on girls and women, and we're basically taught to put up and shut up about a lot of things. Boys are given a free pass far more than girls, and boys are not expected to mature as quickly as girls. Society is unfortunately still very sexist and patriarchal; also, as a woman, it's so much harder to get taken seriously by medical professionals. My brother, dad, and grandad all have/ had autism, but my sis and I were never even assessed for it, despite showing signs of it. At 34, I still haven't had any kind of assessment for it, and my daughter hasn't either, despite showing signs. It's so frustrating, and I'm really glad you were able to get diagnosed. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge of autism

Omg the fairy lights and lava lamps are eye opening for me didn't realise you could visually stim also the clumsiness 😭😭😭😭 Just to add this while damn video is amazingly informative you have validated maaaan of my own behaviours that I also thought was just me being weird, my therapist wanted me to get a diagnosis but it's so expensive/long wait time here! Had to have a small giggle at the bossy play because my sister was not allowed to play dolls with me because she got the characters and voices wrong everutime 😂 Also it was concise!

I find you so relatable and very easy to listen to 😊. You explain things very well! Currently on the very long NHS waiting list for an assessment 😬. My worst sensory issue is bananas and once, to be polite and to mask, I ate a banana creme brulee when my friend's parents took me out for dinner. I was sick all night 🤣.

Ahh thanks so much! The banana thing made me laugh, it's lentils for me, and I have vivid memories of trying to force down lentil soup to the same effect as your creme brulee so I can fully relate 😂 hope you're not waiting too long for your assessment! The waiting can be the worst part.

It was a very informative video, and I appreciate it. I couldn't quite finish it because of the smacking sound you sometimes make between words. I guess we can definitely check the "sensory issues" box. 😟

It's such a weird thing, especially not being able to give a reasoning to 'why' we don't do things haha - just quite simply not doing them 🤷‍♀ thanks for sharing!

The bullying stories sound interesting for a future video, and do you think you knew you were being bullied on a deeper level, but went along with it 'as a joke' to maintain "friendships"?

That's an interesting question, and honestly I'm not sure 😂 I just know that they would say sorry and I'd be like oh ok then 🤷‍♀️

I thought everyone did these things haha. Late diagnosed adhd but not ASD. The t-rex hands thing omg. Esp when driving, I have a tight claw in my lap and need to remind I'm better off with 2 hands on the wheel.

I am a 50 y/o male ... I was missed too, despite very obvious signs. I was even misdiagnosed 15 years ago as not autistic after a 15 minute interview with a psychiatrist (oh isn't socialised healthcare wonderful). I am very likely inattentive-ADHS also.

Clumsiness can also be a sign of dyspraxia which has high comorbidity with autism

I hadn't thought of this! I don't actually know huge amounts about dyspraxia, so thank you for pointing this out as it could be helpful for others.

When I was 10 there were a few girls that I really didn’t know who all gathered around me one day and ushered me way out in a field with a couple of trees, telling that even though it wasn’t my official birthday that they had a surprise for me. And I was like “Really?” Well, down to one of the trees we go where they suddenly commenced to trying to best me up. I fell for it. Totally believed them. I’m still gullible.

Hello Charlotte from my Jerusalem Israel. How are you? I hope work for you is well as well as your start to 2024. I am happy to introduce myself to you. My name is Jonathan Trauner. I will be 30 in Jerusalem this May 15th 2024. I work as a software algorithms tester at Mobileye in Har Hotzvim Jerusalem Israel. I am a poet and performing artist who loves to sing. I was hit by a huge tall tour bus in the area of Mobileye in Jerusalem Israel on June 18th 2023. I broke my left collarbone in three places. I finished recovering last month in Jerusalem. My dream is to become the first poet and artist with Autism to win a Emmy Grammy Oscar Academy Award and Tony Award in 2025 in Los Angeles and to establish Jerusalem Israels second ever coed acapella singing group The JerusaHymns.

Hi! It is mentioned in the video (if you watched that far) that males can, and do, absolutely share these traits! But of course, yes, this is aimed more towards females, since it is coming from a female/personal perspective 😬
