I actually had the Half-Life one, long ago. It wasn't a bad port IMO. As a bonus - the beta port of Resident Evil to gameboy color is just insane, it's honestly a shame it wasn't finished as it was really cool and very technically impressive. Another great video in the books Drew - I can't help but wonder if we're hitting 100k before February is over! Still 5 days to go!
@jasonblalock44296 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I also burned HL for DC back in the day. And yeah, it was great except for the ridiculous number of loading screens. I mean, it stops to load like three or four different times in the intro subway ride alone! The loads are just so incessant and immersion-breaking that it's really hard to get into.
@theSato6 жыл бұрын
It wasn't terrible, it was great. It was a bit more of a "cinematic" experience than a gameplay focused one, but there were very few things that could match that level of presentation on the GBC at the time, it was as good as one could get for atmosphere and technically impressive on every level. The puzzles were surprisingly adequate too. The combat was a little lacking, but workable -- and it WAS a beta after all

There were two licensed ports of Frogger on the Atari 2600. The first was a normal cartridge by Parker Brothers. The second port was released for the Starpath Supercharger on cassette. This second port had nicer, more detailed graphics and was generally more polished than the Parker Brothers version. However many people never knew about it because of the relative obscurity of the Supercharger itself and the later games for it being even more obscure. I knew Frogger existed for it, but I never actually saw it for sale. In fact I only ever saw the first six Starpath games in a store.

I bought a QD just a couple of years ago, and had quite a bit of fun playing TOTALLY LEGAL 100% LEGITIMATELY-ACQUIRED GAMES (shh) and messing about with that lil composer function. I still have the thing, but would gladly sell it if there was a legit N-Gage emulator somewhere around. I'm sure that there's already some way to play that shtuff on a PC (would still love a first-party remaster of EST: Shadowkey or Ashen), but I have no idea how to go about doing that, lol.

These videos take me a week to produce haha. I'm trying my best, but I can't afford to hire anyone like an editor with the amount I make from youtube. Another one that you'd be surprised about was a pitched PC Port of Super Mario bros 3 by iD software (The Guys behind DooM, Wolfenstein, and the Commander Keen series). When they were getting started, Tom Hall and John Carmack had created a DOS compatible PC game engine that could preform Smooth tile scrolling, something that was Unheard of for PC compatibles at the time. (For those unaware, Smooth Scrolling is how Mario handles the Camera, where the Camera moves along with the player, instead of having the camera move in chunk-based increments.) They tested this by creating a Tech Demo called "Dangerous Dave in: Copyright Infringement", Which was a recreation of Super Mario Bros. 3's World 1-1, Remember that PC Hardware was not seen as the standard for Cutting edge gameplay yet. Consoles and Arcades at this point were just more adept at it. So this was a huge leap forward. However - Nintendo did not give iD the rights to make a full SMB3 port for PC, This led to the creation of "Commander Keen" which would later be the Catalyst for the rest of iD softwares mega hits

I knew about all of these, but it was still a fun video. You forgot to mention that Coleco completely screwed its competitors by releasing terrible (but functional) ports to make their system look supirior, along with the timed exclusivity. A homebrew dev has now created a near arcade perfect port of DK to the 2600 to prove that they could have done much, much better. And now history has repeated itself with Watch_Dogs and plenty of other console ports.

Honestly the Half-Life port wasn't too surprising. And same with the Donkey Kong port. Mario and Donkey Kong were just single games, not franchises back then, so Nintendo had no reason to restrict them to just their own consoles.
