As the FAO communicated, India has a food program with subsidies for 840 million of its inhabitants. How will India developing that the food program can be replaced through market economy for all inhabitants. Because they all will have decent earnings, really decent earnings. And for all inhabitants on earth “Leaving no one behind (LNOB) is the central, transformative promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It represents the unequivocal commitment of all UN Member States to eradicate poverty in all its forms, end discrimination and exclusion, and reduce the inequalities and vulnerabilities that leave people behind and undermine the potential of individuals and of humanity as a whole.” And hopefully this vision will be fulfilled for all ordinary people in the universe. You mentioned India engaging more with Europe. I find this really interesting because I feel like the United States and India are growing much closer together. We (I’m an American) have a common rival in China and our taste for working with Pakistan has been soured by their aid of the Taliban in Afghanistan. But this outlook is tempered by the fact that India still works closely with Russia in military development and trade. Furthermore, to hear you say that India will work closely with Europe in the future make me think that India is a true master diplomat. Somehow, they have gotten on the good side of all major powers with the notable exception of China. Would you be willing to talk more about India specifically in a future video?

The response of many indians on Indian news comments(but not all) that they need progress and why should they care if others die for it. The reduction of freedom to be downgraded to a 'partly free' country, the treatment of non Hindus in the country, Modis increasing authoritism, the treatment of Kashmir, high levels of corruption. It is Russia 2.0. Totally lost respect for the country and will not now knowingly but products from there.

@@happydays4302 India is not supporting Russia, it is merely conducting normal diplomatic and commercial ties in the wake of disruption in global supply chain. Europe has reduced it's oil purchase from Russia, and are paying for Arab oil at a much costlier cost to capture the market, which raises oil prices that ordinary Indians just can't afford to pay, prompting Indian oil companies to look for an alternative, which they find in Russia. This is just a normal commercial activity, not a support for Russia. Indians actually supporting Russia in material and finance terms would be a very different scenario, India's current affairs with Russia is not even remotely comparable to NATO and EU states' direct support to Ukraine

Check out Peter Zeihan and his takes on China. He is a Geopolitical strategist and consultant who does great work on showing practical evidence that informs his worldview. He has some interesting takes on the Taiwan issue and thinks it may be overblown. Im not saying he’s necessarily correct, but he gives an extremely compelling argument.

The great thing about following Alex is that he is truely connected to Western geopolitical positions having been Prime Minister of Finland. Being now in academia allows him more broadly consider all sides of the conflict. I will continue to follow Alex because I expect he will be one of the first Western thought leaders capable of cutting through the Western happy talk and acknowledge that the conflict will end on Russia's terms. When Alex "turns", then we can expect the conflict to come to an end.

Really love your videos. You provide an insight that many people have little or no access. One item that I find disappointing is the lack of unity on a North South perspective on the war in Ukraine. This seems quite an opportunity for Russia to exploit and to characterize this as a war brought about by the west trying to impose its will on Russia. The lack of alarm on the implications of an authoritarian victory in Europe for free trade, security, famine and ecological disaster is unsettling. I also have little regard for India (like Turkey) playing games while so many people are dying. I'm looking forward to your next video. Cheers.

Some democracies are on the brink to turn into dictatorships too. Hungary, Poland and Turkey are concerning. It seems that the USA, Italy, Brazil, India, Israel, Peru. @@Sam-tz8ou The EU was never really a democratic institution. The people in power (EU commission) are not elected and the parliament is a toothless joke. If you want a democratic EU, It would need an elected government with a president and/or chancellor (either from the parliament, or direct from the people) and an independent jurisdictional system and unified policy. The power must lay in the elected European government and not in the member states.

I think, India and the EU (or let's say, Europe in general) will be the game changer in the future. India needs investment, governance systems and technology, the EU has a lot of all of that. The EU needs people and export markets. Even if India doesn't seem too rosy in terms of aging population, there are a lot of people there, especially well educated ones that struggle to find jobs in India and want to go to either Europe or the USA. Also, Europe in general is a region that managed to unite after centuries of wars, including two world wars which seems to present a template for hope for many fragmented regions. Of course, the USA had it's influence on making that unification happen. From an Indian perspective, India doesn't need that kind of tight control the USA asserted over Europe for most of the last 70 years. I had a very interesting conversation with a southern American a while ago (south of Mexico, not California or Texas) about the EU and was surprised to hear that there the EU is seen as great achievement while in Europe people ask themselves if the EU should even survive the next decade. The big plus of India is, that they are essentially a democracy. After the Chinese experience, that should be a welcome change to many European politicians. As an fyi I think that Von der Leyen is the wrong president for the EU currently, the same way Lambrecht was the wrong defense minister for Germany. I call it Merkel's legacy: lots of dry, uninspired politicians. I would welcome some French personality. Macron, for example, would be the perfect candidate. He could inspire people without having to address 'boring things' like reforming the French labor market. Macron seems to be the only European politician currently that can go to Washington and actually deposit some charisma. German diplomacy generally sucks. They lack a unifying vision. Good engineering though. Technocrats at the helm is not what Europe currently needs, though.

The massive digital connectivity clearly has an upside in terms of our ability to be connected to you - for example - but it may have negative mental health impact on the younger generation which is the Guinea pig group for this technology. I hope that people are learning parenting skills, like sitting on the floor with their children to play with blocks, Lego etc and reading them books on paper and so on because these are essential to human healthy flourishing and family development.

Alex nails it on India being the wild card. Their rise to prominence is a key theme for the coming years. They are the world's largest democracy, yet not aligned with the West. This is a more general comment, it has little to do with Davos, but some. This made me think of those who are commonly called "the elite" - the movers and shakers, the wealthy the powerful. The elite. Those in power govern or exert influence in the name of, and over, " the common man" or "the average person". How many average people do anyone invited to Davos really know? One goes from a well to do family to an elite university to high levels of government, industry and academia. All represent themselves as representing the concerns of us all, but how many of us "average people" do any of you know well....and I'm not referring to housekeepers, students or nannies, but people you know outside of work and whose opinions you value...or even know? I assume very few, if any. There's no question here, just food for thought.

@@jamesgates1074, Putin did “just shut off the gas” but he was making excuses, and everyone was blaming him. Putin wanted Europe to blame the United States. He was hoping to sew division between the countries that are providing aid to Ukraine hoping that he could get a few, or several to stop providing aid. It obviously didn’t work for several reasons. The main one being that Russia doesn’t have a monopoly on global oil and gas supplies. The world doesn’t need Russian gas.

My graduate school studies in the 1970's and 1980's were valuable, but I have recently come to believe that, to an extent, the French are correct, "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose." Yes there is a lot of new material, but as the Finns and Poles know, from centuries of experience, the Russians are just as aggressive as always, and more like the Mongols than otherwise.

I am a free trade proponent. Maybe I don’t know enough about the US Inflation Reduction Act…regardless, I find the European objections annoying. As with everything, there are degrees. For instance, is free trade good when essential components for important equipment is only available through another country and that country refuses to, or cannot as we have seen in many instances, provide the component? One example is Switzerland as sole manufacturer of ammunition for the Gepard refusing to resupply. All of us need reliable semiconductor sources, and IRA is trying to assure that in the US.

Hi Alex, thank you for your succinct and detailed summary. However, I have reservations and respectful disagreement with you regarding your obsession towards solutions of the war in Ukraine. Your relentless conclusion in that regard: “It all depends on the battle field…. If you want peace tomorrow, you must deliver weapons today” is devastating for me. Though I am not a pacifist, I have a little faith in weapons to bring about sustainable peace. Don’t you think you are bogged with and tired of Putin? Should you? France has certainly formed a strategic partnership with India, from defence to energy. That is something to follow. I do not believe in the democracy vs. autocracy political concept. The developing world wants to keep its options open and stay out of ideological blocs. They will listen if you have something concrete to offer. USA has been rather unable to advance their leadership into new places. Their internal chaos is so extreme that they have been unable to even appoint an ambassador to India for years now. AUKUS has also been a disaster so far: Australia will not get submarines until 2040s and their security policy has been tied too tightly to USA for little payoff so far. Indo-Pacific players are certainly aware of this. I also noticed that no one from the White House were in attendance at Davos. They did send some cabinet members as the highest-ranking Americans...

This seems like a really naïve take. Ideology happens when you least expect it - you either tilt to autocracy or you don't. If you don't try to actively avoid autocracy you probably will fall into it since its easiest to concentrate power in a motivated individual (they're usually not that great as history shows). America doesn't really want to actively rule the world, they just don't want you against them. I always find it interesting how people who don't reside in the west don't understand this about America. While they could act like an Empire, they are actually unwilling to actively colonise and repress as would be needed to subdue nations (something neither Russia or China have an issue doing). Take SA, they are technical aligned with the US but they talk shit about the states all the time. The US is generally fine with this, because, while they talk a good game they are not stupid enough to do anything to harm that sweet sweet influx of US weapons. If the US has not appointed an ambassador to India its because they don't want to appoint one, not because they can't - its a very easy appointment, you don't vote on ambassadors. I'm not sure why you think AUKUS is a disaster (I feel this wishful thinking on your part).Australia will always be the staunchest of US allies and will never align with China (I laugh every time someone thinks this could happen, it won't, culturally and historically China is just not able to surplant the benefits of the US alliance and China's recent actions have just made the alliance stronger). If your only thinking about subs, they are only part of the deal, read closer and other defence systems were included, particular cruise missiles that have a range which will allow Aus to hit China's trade routes. That's pretty significant and in someways, considering how integrated Chinese trade is for its own survival - they import nearly all their energy and food - better than subs for security. Sadly the geopolitics are not suitable for the implementation of any solution to global warming. The idea of monetary or political profits prohibits what is currently required to implement a true solution. YES, a solution is already known but it has a cost and no one wants to pay. Democracies want private enterprise to provide the solution at no cost to the government and authoritian regimes do not want to spend funds on doing something with a long lead time, they want the money to spend right now. The solution is simply energy in sufficient quantity and at such a low cost that energy production companies suppress the discussion. An end to global warming, end the use of fossil fuels, and no more droughts!
