Utilizing a production run I talk about 5 spindle gouge techniques I practice to keep developing my own skills. These include: picking up lines, refreshing edges, bead focus, finish cuts and thin finials. To get to the next level these are things that need to become second nature.

I have been having trouble with my spindle gouges with catches. When I use my bowl gouges I do not have the same problem. This video is helping me figure out what I may be doing wrong. I think I am taking to agressive of a cut with the spindle gouge, where as the bowl gouge tends to allow a more agressive cut. Thanks for the video, it is very helpful.

Thanks Shawn for taking the time to show a couple of “trade secret” tip that get either glossed over or flat out omitted. Thanks again. Cheers, Tom

Thank you. After I watched your video about how to make tops, I made a bunch! I learned a lot about handling the spindle gauge at the same time.

Thanks for taking the time to slow down the cut so that we could see how it as it occurred. I particularly liked how you highlighted what part of the front edge was actually cutting. "A picture is worth a thousand words."

Very helpful. My first lathe is not really setup for bowls. Even the tool rest is the full length of the lathe. I finally know what tools I need, in addition to the two I have. Now finding well made and great steel and great price???? I haven't even got a permanent spot for my lathe yet, but am planning to use our wood splitter to section up some blanks from the bucked logs. I realized this will be super easy a wood splitter with a large knife edged splitting wedge. I can get these blanks made up ahead of my shop renovations, as it will just be a matter of splitting some differently and tossing the bits into various piles. I still need a couple turning tools yet, so no hurry to get the lathe set up....although I am getting anxious :-) I already want a better lathe lol

I enjoy all of your videos, Shawn, but I was ready for some turning. Thanks for the deeper understanding. That's what helps other revelations or concepts become clear. Trailer is looking great, so far, also.

This was great - thanks for posting. I think I've got the basics down well, but sometimes random problems crop up. I've been thinking I just need more muscle memory/practice for consistency. But these tips give me some next level things to pay attention to. Your description of where on the tool the cuts are occurring and the close camera work are really helpful.

Awesome video as always. Your teaching style is right on point for me. Have you ever thought about doing classes again. Online or in class. Can you do more of these with any other tool? Very new to turning learned most that I know by watching YT and practicing what I have seen.

Shawn, wonderful video on spindle gouge use. Looks like your tool rest is above center, as usually used for skew work. Is that just camera angle or intentional? I like your deliberate teaching style and explanations.

I want suggestions do first cuts to do when very new to turning. What to focus on to improve. First few wood species to use and not get frustrated. Worried I will not get any good results because of wood selection. Very curious about acrylic blanks and whatever resin blanks I see at the stores.
