You've got more money than brains if you spend $125.00 to $150.00 on a marking knife.

This is another thing wrong woodworking. There's a guy in Canada. He makes videos on dovetail. He shows step by step how to lay the out, how to cut them, everything you want to know about dovetails. Then he came out with his own saw, his own marking knife, and other assorted tools to make your dovetail better. All for around $1000.00 . Now you're pushing a marking knife. Are you gonna tell us how that knife costs? My point. You don't have to spend ridiculous amounts of money to have fun while woodworking.

Great pitch. You soon learn the importance of a tool AFTER you buy it. I succumbed to that Batty angle thing and I think I know which drawer it's in ...

Shawn, was your dad into wood carving? That tool you found of his is used by wood carvers. Cummings Tool used to sell them but they are really hard to find now, in working order. I wood carve basically faces, and that tool is very useful but works best on softer wood. Due to them being hard to find, most have gone to rotary tools as well as hand tools. I want to get into turning wood for a different hobby and have a lathe being delivered today. I like watching your videos because you take the time to explain things and you have gotten me into turning rather than carving now. Thank you.

The Woodcraft store I go to has a "Woodpecker" display. Honestly, I have never seen products as overpriced as this. Totally out of line. The dial indicator set up you show must be outrageously pricey. You're obviously a very smart guy. Why don't you use your own indicator and make your own attachments and mounts?(out of wood)

Lee Valley (Veritas) is a total knockoff of the Titemark made by Glen Drake. I don't care how much they change to avoid Patent infringements. As for the Woodriver Chinese crap, they should not even be sold in the Western World. I'm looking at you Rob Cosman (but we know what he did with that company and Lie Nielsen designs don't we?)

This may be a dumb question, but as you grind away material on the tool, wouldn't your distance on the jig change? Like your marks for each tool; wouldn't they drift over time?

Shawn, I'm a 40-year woodworker,I started a woodworking club a number of years ago and have taught woodworking for 18 years through our local community college, our club has a new member who wants to make her first project on a wood lathe, I like to send a video to new woodworkers on the basics of what they are asked about before attending our meetings, I learned online how to turn (thankyou) what I found looking on KZbin is people say their video is for beginners but they don't cover the basics like the parts of a lathe, but they refer to these parts by name, new people don't know what they are talking about when the person in the video is referring to a specific part of the lathe, the video makers also mislabel the title of their videos, as an example"The Lathe - Turning Basics #01 - A foundation video class for woodturners." but all that happens in this video is that you put a new lathe together" ? You are a great teacher and have wonderful information, I thank you for sharing your vast knowledge, please offer a video starting by explaining the parts of the lathe and the rest of the details do a simple spindle turning as if you have a new person next to you who has never held a screwdriver in their life. Happy Holidays

I love when your dad walked in and called you an idiot! I agreed with him on the Stuart batty gauge, it’s very easy to figure out. However I agreed with both of you on determining wall thickness. It’s nice to have a tool for backup or verification but getting used to using your fingers is key. Plus as turning get larger or deeper your fingers no longer reach. Thanks for more good content, I know you’re not really an idiot😂

Nitro-V isn't powdered steel. It's a custom stainless designed by New Jersey Steel Baron. Similar to AEB-L. Excellent steel...I use it exclusively for my stainless kitchen knives. The marking knife looks like a quality tool. I recently made one for myself (very different than this one lol, I use mine for wood and leather both, so it includes a scratch awl on the butt end, and I put leather on the top for a bit 'softer' feel). The 'soft' feel on this knife absolutely comes from the rounded edges and the bead blasted/tumbled surface finish. I do the same with the spine and choil of my kitchen knives also lol. With care that blade should last forever. Thanks for sharing and great video. Honest reviews are hard to come by these days!

Almost done with the build and a few comments: 1) the video mentions 6 foot length but plans are 8 feet. Remember to adjust measurements 2) you are missing the screws for putting in the braces as the 1 1/4 are not long enough to go through the 2x4 and the brace. You need longer screws. About to go buy those tomorrow. Also you need 200 screws minimum for the total screws for metal brackets i ran out at 9pm on a sunday and didnt have anymore screws. Also i suggest doing star screws as i had a lot of the philips strip on me and are a pain in the butt to drive. 3) for homedepot cut great tip one note though tell them to cut the length first. So for example mine was trimming it down to 6 feet. Then tell them second cut for in half so they are both equal. If you give them two cuts they will do them in the wrong order. This is important because you will be stacking them on top.
