You asked why. After singing in church choirs for about 25 years….and also some choirs in grade school, and never having really learned how to read music except some guitar in the bass clef when I was a kid, I decided that it was going to be in my best interest to actually learn what was going on in more detail in the music that I was holding. I had purchased a very inexpensive Yamaha keyboard about 20 years ago with no weighted keys…. very much an organ feel…and that sat for most of the time that I owned it….until about three years ago when I decided that I really did need to learn something. The pianist at church recommended the Alfred adult book, and that helped a lot, but I also found a lot of online free material that helped me learn how to play all of the major scales in both hands, and gave me a little taste here and there of some more advanced songs… like the Vince Guaraldi peanuts Christmas tunes, which sound so simple, but are so difficult to play. I have been taking a pass on all those KZbin ads that talk about playing 400 songs using just four chords…..because that’s not my goal. My goal is to learn the instrument, and while I have no expectation of being able to play in a Chopin competition, I want to be able to improvise and understand how music fits together….in other words, “how to make the sausage” that I played on the radio in Philadelphia as a rock disc jockey. I downloaded a transcription of Joni Mitchell’s river, and I was able to take it apart measure by measure and construct a shortened version that I can use as a warm-up piece, and after two years of playing it every day, I’ve been able to make it sound very much like the record. Right now I’m in a quandary because I am ready to purchase a keyboard that has a real action like the FP 30 X, or the ES 120 but that’s a bunch of change spent all in one spot…and I have a second quandary as to which online course I’d like to subscribe to where I can connect the keyboard via MIDI or Bluetooth and explore interactive lessons through those subscriptions, but frankly, most of the music that has come out in the past 30 years has never been to my liking, except perhaps Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt.” Hey, I sing bass. If you can recommend an online lesson subscription that doesn’t concentrate on Adele or Taylor Swift…..I would be most grateful .

Good job bringing together elements of your other videos and shining a light on key areas to focus on. The amount of information out there is dizzying, so I appreciate how you reinforce your key concepts and show how they work together. I’m simply learning for fun, and I am much more confident every time I watch a Pianoly video!

Me being slightly just past the beginning stage I found your techniques really do work,there is so much to learn that I was getting bogged down with all the learning videos out there teaching you this,that and the other,so I cleared my head and now I am just focusing on your lessons,but I am also trying to read music but more of a sideline,I can play many chords,scales ETC,but being 70,you don’t seem to pick things up as fast as you did when you were younger,BUT I’m really enjoying learning,,Keep those videos coming!!!Dave from the UK.

I am a guitar player, and I have just become aware of the many free digital instruments available, but to take advantage of them, I need to be able to use the keyboard. Your guidance on the piano looks like it will be very useful towards this goal, and allow me to create digital orchestra music.

You have raised the question why I want to play the piano. • Sometimes I just want to play in order to let loose and to drown myself in random harmonies and melodies. • Long-term goal: there are specific movie and game themes I would love to play myself - like especially different titles by Hans Zimmer, but also from Studio Ghibli movies, games like Monkey Island and Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West. • My childhood was during the eighties and early nineties … There are so many cool rock and pop songs during that era … Yeah, I would like to play along to those as well.

@gustough
@gustough Жыл бұрын
@@pianoly Yes, I think this may help me stay focussed. As for the movie themes I am certain that this is something really for a long term perspective, because this requires "not only chords", but also a lot more in the direction of "classical piano" - I assume at least. af for the other two things: These could be considered short to long term goals. Some songs are kind of "basic" or "easy" to approach, because they work pretty well with basic chord progressions, while others are very complex and require a lot more practicing. But this is the way to go: easy and hard pieces, a mixture with each song being its own challenge. This is how I hope to progress in order to play this instrument in a manner I would not want to hide it (anymore). :)

i like learn play piano for a hobbie, and reduce stress. i tried learning before. i was all over the place. now watching your videos I can get a routine. before I would sit at keyboard and I think now what? you show how to learn the keys and chords and exercises. now I will have a routine. I'm hopping to see a band or book of songs I like I can buy and just sit and play whatever the song is. instead buying books like children books to learn to play. learning disabilities I have hard time learning chords. keep making videos please you do a great job teaching. thank you

I think the top note is the melody note and the chord voicing is built under that. SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) like the sheet music for hymns.

By answering to a question I have a weird ability (which just appears sometimes and I can't control that) to make somethink from nothink. For example by hearing while someone is pushing a drum after short time other bunch of instruments starts playing that melody in me minds and with it comes words, emotions and other things. Also sometimes I just hear music in me minds which I don't heard anywhere else before and I would like to learn to replicate that by using piano and maybie someday create some amazing songs with it.
