Kirsty Partridge Art hey! I wanna know what your opinion is on this, so what do you think of artists putting out a request board where they draw things for free basically. Honestly I do this sometimes but I'm not a professional artist so I don't put out commissions since I'm still learning, but from someone like your point of view I kinda wanna see what your thoughts on this is.

Kirsty Partridge Art (people ask in school) I ABSOLUTLY HATE it when people ask me to draw them, its very rude. With all my homework how would I have the time?! Plus i prefer to not draw random people, they dont even THINK about giving me a refrence photo. How would I draw from memory? I dont like drawing relisticly, and I especilly hate when people decide to criticize my art style.

Studios keep artists around for projects and seasons. It's not a career you expect when artists experience unemployment between studio hopping. To a degree yes, but you'll work for jumping from company to company a lot.

Hey. Never mind the movies and music, think about the very house they live in, the bed they lay in, the chair they sit in their office, the car they drive, yes, the veggie packages and labels at supermarkets that they buy, the clothes they wear.... All of these things were designed by artists! People can be painfully ignorant!

As a photographer I hear that "That's not real work. You just push a button" a lot. :/ Also I get a lot of comments like "Oh, your camera takes great looking pictures!" Usually I respond to that with:"Yes... I taught it everything it can! ;)"

One of my favorite comparisons to this story is this... Person shows up to dinner party. Host says, "Your photography is great, you must have a very good camera." Guest replies, "Diner was great! You must have a very good stove!" Haha...Yes, I get asked that a lot. What do you shoot with? I took a picture just like that, here it is on my phone. (It is a similiar shot, but plain) I always politely look at their photos. This is typically while I am in my booth at events. The worst is when people ask me where I got my frame and if I would sell it to them without my artwork...Ouch!! LOL.

I absolutely love photography. In fact, I use it a lot for reference. I can't be in all those magnificent places, so the photographer brings them to me. And, just for their own beauty, I appreciate all kinds of effects, shades, angles, colors. As many kinds of painting, there's photography.

Oh my god, it's the absolute same with riding. People are always surprised how exhausting it can be because they tend to think the horse does all the work. Obviously the horse (and the camera) play a big role in it, but it is the rider and the photographer that count. A great horse with a lousy jockey won't win anything while a expensive camera with a bad phtographer can only capture bland pictures and no emotions or anything.

I've been told I'm selfish for not offering free artwork because I should 'share my talent around', as if it's something I was magically blessed with. Also I was on a train in London once and these two businessmen were talking about their friend and said "Oh he's an artist so he just sits and draws all day... must be nice not to work." They have no idea how much work goes into being an artist and running your own business. I've even had to explain it to people at cons, that artists don't just draw the artwork and nothing else, they format and edit products for printing, package and post it, run their websites etc. They were really surprised - I think some people think we have an army of staff to help us! But that aside this is a really beautiful piece and I loved seeing it come together. The minimal colour palette is so effective!

These are all sooo annoying! Some more I thought of off the top of my head 1. Unwanted advice. For instance, if you prefer doing portraiture, and someone comes along like "you know what would be really cool, if you switched to doing landscapes, I mean you've already done plenty of portraits" or if you prefer cartoon styles and they're like "well why don't you do realism instead?" 2. When someone asks, "Are you busy?" and you tell them you're working on art, and they say, "Oh okay, so you aren't busy then" 3. When you're clearly in the beginning stages of a piece and you get questions like "but where is the nose?" or "they don't have a neck" ...LOL

My art teacher used to do this and if I didn't immediately respond she'd take my pencil push me out of the way and do it herself, I used to get so mad, I wouldn't finish the piece. She would do this to everyone, some people let her because essentially she was doing their work for them, I felt unable to explore techniques comfortably in her classroom. I will say this, the next year I got another art teacher and she made up for it all, thought me a lot and even came to my exhibitions when I'd left school to support me.

The thing I hate most is when people compare your art to other people, but especially when it’s unfairly. One of my friends kept comparing my art with someone a year older than me. I couldn’t take it anymore and confronted that it hurt my feelings. I told them I think comparing us is unfair and I gave them a example of why it hurt my feelings ( she wasn’t comparing us in a polite way). She said she doesn’t remember doing that and that if she was me she wouldn’t care. But I’m not her. I drifted away from that person and don’t talk to them now. Sorry this is so long!!

This! So much this! I see so many of these types of comments on people's art work and it pisses me off. Sure your skill might not be as good as your favorite artist, but putting yourself down to get attention or sympathy doesn't help you improve. Also, it's not a talent, it's a skill. Sure, some people have more inclination towards art, but it doesn't mean that you can't be just as good. It's all about practice and determination with a bit of passion.

@@funkyfranx Hi, yes this is a five year old comment, lol. Looking back, “hate” is a strong word to use, but I stand by my opinion and I dont think thats me being up myself. Back then I was still in school and everyone had at least some time to practice and do art themselves if they wanted, by talking themselves down while putting in no effort to practice themselves it felt like they were disrespecting my time and effort. I guess I didnt clearly convey this sentiment in the comment above, I just didnt/dont like people using a negative comparison to themselves to compliment me. In my head: “But you can draw like this”, “You can have this “talent” as well!” and “You are not bad at art”. I hope you understand…

Moral of the story: people are often self centered, jealous, think they're an expert on all subjects and highly critical without experience on being an art critic. I'm almost 60 years old and have been doing art most of my life. My advice is just to ignore people and do your own thing. People have their own issues they need to work on. Your creation turned out to be beautiful. You're so talented.

When somebody asks for something, don't just say no, what you want to do is quote your price. If it's not something you really want to do, quote a high price, high enough that you don't think anyone will pay it. Most people will then leave you alone, but occasionally somebody will be willing to pay that high price. Then you've made a nice chunk of change, the person who asked is happy you didn't say no, so it's win-win. If you underestimated your value and you're getting many requests at what you thought was a high price, just raise your price until you're not doing that thing you don't want to do very often.

I LOVE this piece! It’s more to the real version of the children’s story. Never compromise your work. You are such a talented person. I do have a funny story for you. A “friend” of a relative was needling me to do a piece for him at his price. After months of telling him no, I agreed to send him my absolute best at that price, even in that size. He bragged about how he got my price down. I sent him a box of supplies with an instructional booklet. I explained his price covered supplies and postage. The booklet was a present from me.

"you should color it" "But it doesnt look like that..." *ANNOYING ART THINGS*_______ When people just look over you in a public setting. I get that they are interested in what your drawing, but sometimes i want to relax and just draw in any public setting. When people just think that artist can just sit and IMMEDIATELY just start drawing. NOPE! It takes me forever to think about what I am going to draw next. When people think creating art isnt emotionally draining. When im drawing, i sometimes get so stressed or angry at myself because of my drawing. Drawing can be REALLY stressful. ART CAN ALSO BE PHYSICALLY PAINFUL. BACK PAINS, NECK PAINS, HEADACHES, PAIN IN THE ARM, WRIST OR HAND, AND OTHER THINGS. whenever you dont know whats wrong with your work so you try and fix it but it gets WORSE. 🔴 BEGINNER ARTIST WANTING TO BECOME BETTER ARTIST, PLEASE READ : You DO NOT need to buy fancier/more expensive art supplies. Eventually I couldn't do it anymore. I used to be in several art groups but I've since left them. :\ Now i'm just recovering and trying to get back to drawing for myself... Don't worry, it's OK. I did the same. I tried to make it as an artist, and I realized the moment I HAD to draw, the moment it was compulsory, I deeply hated it. I found my real vocation in teaching (l love doing it even when it's compulsory, I love preparing classes and interacting with students), so I make my money in other ways and draw and paint only for pleasure. That means I don't give a shit about the result not being "good enough". You don't need to be good, really. I used to be obsessed with getting better to the point that even though I was getting better, I despised myself for not being Angus McBride, or Kirsty Partridge, or Das Pastoras. Well, to hell with that. I draw and have fun, and that's all I'm going to do. I watch these videos so I can have more fun, but once the pressure to do right and well and perfect, and aligned and in perspective and with correct lightning went out, it became fun again. Just enjoy it. Imagine you're five. Anything you draw would be awesome to your 5 year old self. That's the point.

First off, I just want to say that this is absolutely PHENOMENAL. You have SUCH a beautiful style, and I absolutely will be subscribing to your channel now. I also wanted to contribute to the art-related phrases you hate to hear. I absolutely HATE when you tell someone your preferred style (even if you are not an artist, but are just appreciating a certain style of art), and that someone says something akin to, "oh, well that's not REAL art though." My father is an artist, but I have caught him saying this before, and it frustrated me greatly. It's as if people don't realize that their opinion is not the only one out there. Just because YOU can't see the detail and painstaking effort that went into a piece, doesn't mean that detail and effort wasn't put forth. And even if the amount of detail and effort wasn't "as much" as what went into another artist's work, THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT ANY LESS OF A PIECE OF ART.

One of the things that peevs me off, is when someone says: 'oh.... All you've been doing is the same thing.... Only with different designs and poses.' 'why not draw something else?' Something else is when someone asks for you to like/follow them and leave a link on your video/drawing on any social media or Art app and don't say anything relevant to the work I have done or how much time was takin' in making that piece. Its disrespectful and insulting to myself as an artist and I bet it is to other artists as well. I mostly just make my art because I want to show people that its fun, and something we all can enjoy.... But it makes me feel insecure about my work which leads me and others to not want to do anything more with it. Which is saddening because lots of people make great art and..... Its frustrating that allot of young artists are trading likes for likes and follows for follows..... They'll get likes and followers later on when people like their art and respect the teqniqe they have for certain areas of art.... They don't need to get them right away... This stuff takes time.... Not to mention that when they say they "need" followers and such.... They are just really saying they don't want to wait for some people who like their art, and that they want to force people to like their art because they think its good and think they deserve the recognition for something they made with little effort....

I just discovered this video. I decided to watch because I've been a licensed hair stylist for 40 years. A different art medium but also a form of creativity. When I was in my 20's doing hair, I had a great clientele and very busy. Sometimes I would get a new client and they would ask me what I planned to do for a living. I wasn't just gong to do hair my whole life, was I ? This happened a few times and it was always men. I have a neighbor who told me she and the other women were talking and they thought I should color all the kids hair in bright tones. She announced this in front of the other moms. She never talked to me privately. I never answered her or brought it up. Still bothers me. It would have been between 8-12 kids!!! Loved watching you create this piece. Beautiful!!!

lemme point out that I'm crazy for dark/sci-fi/space magic stuff, long ago, when I was taking AP art in a suburban high school with a lot of basic kids (oh the memories), I painted a boy in a gas mask holding a balloon, with a burning ferris wheel in the background as a project, completely in love with its badass-ery *^* but whenever I worked on it, I kept overhearing mutter like "whughh that's so creepy" or " omg ew she's so weird for drawing that", etc etc. that wasn't the only piece I got those comments from, and yeah, of course I was bummed out, but I didn't care much, I was there to flourish, not to take selfies and chat nonstop. Now that I'm in college, it's a very different approach, and it really got the weight and anxiety off my shoulders about the negativity. I made a great progress in my art and I am just so happy hearing "your art is so cool!" other than "what's wrong with you?" ( I guess they don't like my seriousness?) LONG STORY SHORT: I HATE when people criticize your art because they prefer unicorns and rainbows and not something else.

I was selling original art as part of an event next to a local (expensive) restaurant. I had so many people compliment my art, but then scoff at seeing my prices. To be clear, my price for an original piece was comparable to one meal at this restaurant these same people were walking in and out of. So they saw enough value in a single meal to spend that much money, but they found it crazy to spend that same amount on something they admire that will last their lifetime. As for something people always say to me that drives me insane: "Why would I pay you $75 for (original) art when I could just buy a canvas print of something at Hobby Lobby for $45?" I just have no idea how to answer someone who is that level of clueless.

Love the drawings you do. I learn a lot from watching these types of videos, thanks kirsty 😁. Now then~ for things that I hate to hear. " Drawings can't get you anywhere far" said my parent to me on almost a daily basis. So I made a KZbin channel to promote and teach art. "Where's the income? If you can't make money, it's not worth it!" they said. I propose selling prints on redbubble. "No one's gonna buy it! You need to sell stuff that people actually need. You don't need art to survive." my dad quickly turned down the idea. "I know! Why don't we do a food delivery service, that would surely be a successful business." he continued pushing his ideas onto me but still refusing my ideas. Seriously! When you're parents don't support your ideas, it hurts a lot.

I don't know if it's just me but as somebody studying gcse art I get so irritated by people (including my art teacher) saying things like 'well not everyone is born with talent like you' or I've literally had people look at my work and pick out things wrong with it just to prove to themselves that I'm not 'perfect'. My 'talent' is countless hours of hard work, some pieces take over 20 hours and it's a lot of stress, money and honestly not as glamorous as people may think. I'll admit my work is quite good but it isn't some rare gift that I was presented with when I was born. It's practice and time and it's ripping pieces up after spending hours working on because they're 'not good enough' and it bugs me that all my dedication and unhealthy amounts of time are discredited because it's just 'expected'. I really hate talking about this normally because I feel like I just sound really annoying and whiny but I just personally think that the word 'talent' can sometimes be a bit diminishing and patronising almost when used in the wrong context. I don't know if I'm the only one but it's perfectly fine to disagree with me haha.

Harley Hamilton I think it's appropriate to call young artists talented. Like I've seen this 16 year old who creates stunning photorealistic portraits. That's to me more talent than practice. Of course maybe she has had art teachers paid by her parents since age 8 or something but mostly that's talent driven. Plus I think the difference is that someone with talent is someone who looks at their own art at every stage and likes it enough to keep going and to actually work 20 hours on a piece. I don't consider myself highly talented and I don't make decent art.when I work hard on something till my eyes hurt, I'm always disappointed in it and don't want to try harder. I guess that's a personality thing too but still maybe if I liked my art I would do it more. Idk if I'm explaining well enough. Basically if you are painting realistically at age 8 (I've seen that too but she actually contributed it to God because she is religious) then it's fair for people to say how talented you are

1) Its not exactly over social media, but I get so many of my friends asking if I can draw them Like, no. Occasionally I will draw stuff for them, y'know just when I bored in class and I don't like the drawing, but they do But. I have never drawn something for one of my friends 2) Everyone has been supportive of my art, so they're alright with if I go into it, but since I'm more into forensics, art is just really a HUGE side/back up thing (But I also wanna do teaching, with art, drama and history, so art still fits into a main plan) 3) literally, just leave my art style alone. I've worked so hard to achieve my style and you're making my self esteem about it go down 4) I have a friend, who I admit is a better artist than I am, but she occasionally will draw what I'm drawing, but better. And then I get so iffy about my art so I stop for a little while 5) It takes a lot of work to art, and its annoying when someone decides it not worth what you think it is, because that makes it seem degrading to your art

Hello Kirsty, So people think that Arts are not a career?! What about the movies they watch, music they listen, books they read or paintings?! Think about the very house they live in, the bed they lay in, the chair they sit in their office, the car they drive, yes, the veggie packages and labels at supermarkets that they buy, the clothes and shoes they wear.... All of these things were designed by artists! Even something as small as a shirt button had to be designed and created by an artist. People can be painfully ignorant! I just wanted to tell you that requesting to drop the price happens a lot even in my line of work (which is not Art related), and usually what I tell them is "Call someone else, I have no time for you". Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and please continue with your awesome videos, I love watching them on my lunch breaks!

OMG I'm furious just thinking about it. Someone came up to me as I was drawing in school assembly years ago and snatched my sketch pad and shouted MINE! I got it back off them, all through the years when I was on social media, she'd show up and and comment MINE! Under pictures of my pieces. She once even tried to take one of my painting off the wall in the gallery, or shed come in and cause trouble and refuse to leave till we gave her something for free, we called security, ridiculous experiences of the lengths people will go to, to get something for nothing, she was also one of These ' art shouldn't have a price, what you produce belongs to society and you can have credit when your dead' people

@@michelleclarke9868 OMG! That sounds like a horrendous experience. I take the first comment here as a joke but your case sounds like serious harassment plus stalking and well worth bringing in the police and or solicitor. Hope it's all sorted and in the past now.

In art class we had a substitute teacher (she was a jerk) she said that I hadn't put effort into it that I wasn't trying it made me feel like my art was horrible and that I wasn't good enough so. Love your art Kristy you certainly better than me 👍👍👍
