Thank you for being honest. Ladies, I’m old. Eat healthy. Drink water. Work out. Become a confident,kind, thoughtful person. Real, long term beauty starts inside and the ravages of time will never take that away. Find a few good cheap products that work for your hair. And a routine that takes little time. Time and money are too important to waste.

Same here. If I want my wavy hair to be wavy, I leave some regular conditioner in it, spray it with water, scrunch and then spritz with hair spray and do it again. Scrunch again when it's dry. Works pretty good. Been doing this since 2010, when my middle aged hair decided it wasn't bone straight anymore. Now it is part time straight and part time wavy!

Some people's jobs are to work on their hair, or their makeup, or their skin, or their abs or glutes or whatever (same goes for having literally hundreds of plants, or perfectly manicured nails at all times, or a perfect vintage wardrobe). And that's fine if that's what they're into and they can make a living at it, good for them! The problem is exactly that people see it and start to think it's normal or that there's something wrong with them if they don't do the same things or achieve the same results as someone whose job it is to focus on, and then show off, these aspects of their lives, while for most of us, it's just one more thing to handle.
@HolisticEnchilada2 күн бұрын
Exactly this! For some it's fine, but it's not normal for everyone with textured hair to have these kinds of routines.

This is true for me too. And probably the case for many influencers. I can make anything "work" but that doesn't mean it works better than other products 😜

I don’t have curly hair. My hair only gets slightly wavy at the ends. But, all my family has either curly or wavy hair. When I was growing up, my sister who always has had curly hair would literally just do this and get flawless looking curls. She would get out of the shower, grab any drugstore mousse, scrunch for like five minutes, and then put it in a bun with a bunch of bobby pins. She would leave it like that, until it dried and then she would let it loose. I’m not saying this is the method that would work for everyone. It definitely it wouldn’t work for me because I only have baby waves at the ends. My hair is more straight. But, it worked for her. You don’t need a lot of products, very specific products, or a ton of steps to achieve curls. You just have to do what works for you. Haircare is very personal, just like skincare. I don’t know if my sister watches these videos, but I wonder what she would think of them. She probably would be laughing at the craziness, lol. Another thing that bothers me is when someone tries the CGM and post it online, a ton of people will come like a hive to tell the person all the ways they did it wrong. God forbid, a girl with straight hair does the curly hair/girl method. That’s not at all allowed. So, someone like me who has wavy hair at the ends… isn’t allowed to do the curly hair method. I have straight hair. So, i have to stay straight, lol. It’s gotten pretty crazy. 🤪 Do what works for you. That’s it.

Thank you so much for this. Some are absolutely obsessed with frizz. Most are really sweet but I’m kind of tired of how not one single curl can be out of place. They want us to think their way is best while they spend so much time brushing it a lot and complain about why their hair breaks off. Plus they are obsessed with heavy gels, which I hate, as I prefer a more natural look and they make my hair break off. Needing to make a video every week makes them use many of the same subjects in the new videos even though it’s the same info over and over again. My favorite is the experts who think they can solve everyone’s problems. It’s nearly impossible to do. There are too many variants. It’s just trial and error on an individual basis.

Yeah, the constant content creation means you need to get creative and use lots of products. It's good to be aware.

It’s nice to have someone be honest about curly hair. I’m more toward the 3s, and if you went by people online, you’d think you’d have to do a multi-step routine with curls that lasted a week or more-it’s just not realistic. Trying to keep hair that long just leads to dryness, knots, and tangles, and splits. I also agree with the accumulation of products (hoarding). I love a new product as much as the next person, but I will use what I have up, then buy something new or something I’ve had my eye on to try. I think somewhere along the way curly hair just became so complicated when it doesn’t have to be. I miss the days when Teri Laflesh has the internet ablaze with her simple routine

You speak from my soul! I've been trying to revitalize my curls/waves for about 2 years now, doing simple things so that I don't have to get up even earlier in the morning than I already do. I now swap care products with a colleague who also has curly hair. If something doesn't work for me, it works for her and vice versa. This saves us both money and nerves. And I don't care about frizz at all. It's normal/ natural 🤷🏼♀️. Greetings from northern Germany.

I completely agree with the five points you made. Thank you!! Alot of curly hair influencers show way too many products that are high end expensive. It's easy to get caught up in thinking that if you just buy one more product it will be the one that gives you the perfect outcome. What you said at 15:14 is the whole internet. It's so hard to find anything from years ago nowadays as well as it's not easy to find anything on the popular social media platforms where you want to search content from years ago. This is done so purposefully so everything is buried and replaced/erased. They are trying to do this with everything. It causes so much chaos. I remember when google searches used to pull up quality information before 2020. Easier to research. I never thought it would change because the internet was somewhat stable since the early 2000's-2019.

@Ingryd You're so right! That is exactly my experience too. There's the google AI assistant's summary, then articles that don't contain both my search words just one the other and then yeah I get reddit sometimes too. I am glad someone remembers what it used to be like before it changed. There was a breadth of information before compared to now and I think it was done purposefully to limit information.
@HolisticEnchilada2 күн бұрын
As a blogger, I know all about this. My blog traffic has steadily declined over the years because of Google's search result changes. It's all about pushing products and instant answers, because that's what people like to click on.
@TanyaKatherine2 күн бұрын
@HolisticEnchilada That's interesting to hear from a blogger's perspective and that you've also seen a change in blog traffic. That shows there really has been a change and it's not just myself having a hard time with it. I notice there is less independent content from blogs and it is mostly the bigger corporations and bigger honchos, news sites etc on the first pages. All the independent sites and blogs are pushed back and those had the best information to me that wasn't watered down.

I bought WAY too many products while I was figuring out my routine, and I learned that you can donate them! I sent mine to Project Beauty Share, which takes products that are at least 75% full (with some exceptions for sanitary reasons) and distributes them to shelters and other orgs. I know some other folks have donated them directly to womens' shelters, etc. My stylist also said that the local high school's cosmetology program could use them. Also: Thing 4 bothers me the most because the super high definition influencer look is the hardest to maintain. I'm lucky that a fluffier look looks better on me, since that evolves much more gracefully. It develops more frizz and loosens every day, but it's way less noticeable in a "turbulent cloud" than in "shiny ribbon curls". I get 5 good (but different) days with no refreshing - I just use a wide toothed comb every morning and dry shampoo or leave-in conditioner as needed. I think part of the reason why the super high definition look is the influencer norm is BECAUSE it's not realistic. Not everyone's hair can produce that look, and even if you achieve it, it's a ridiculous amount of work to maintain. So if you can be convinced that that look is what everyone should aspire to and anyone can easily do it, then you will keep consuming content to figure out what you're "doing wrong" when you struggle with it. It's a variation of "steal your self esteem so they can sell it back to you" advertising, except nobody has to do it intentionally - the algorithm will automatically favor content that feeds that cycle just because it produces more engagement.

It’s so refreshing to see relatable and honest content. I so appreciate you speaking about the realistic expectations you’re talking about. @@elizabethheim1130 I deep condition every week but I don't do a bond building treatment or a strong hard protein treatment or a lamellar treatment every week. I don't use Ayurvedic or DIY treatments at all. Some influencers would have people believe that they need to do multiple treatments all in one day. The label on my strong hard protein treatment says to use a protein-free deep conditioner after so I'm following the instructions of the manufacturer and not am influencer. A lot of people don't follow the manufacturer's instructions. My longest routine is: 10 minutes Olaplex 0, 45 minutes Olaplex 3, 5 minutes Olaplex 4 and 10 minutes Olaplex 8. I do that once every 6 weeks.

Excellent video. Things like the curly girl method are for those who are single and extremely vain that they would waste so much time trying to look pretty. People should try leaving their hair alone for some time, does wonders. All anyone need is oiling hair once a week, a natural homemade shampoo+conditioner like our grandparents used to use, and maybe a leave-in conditioner. I stopped using commercial shampoos 2 years ago and make my own shampoo, and the change in my hair has been phenomenal. My natural waves which had become limp because of commercial shampoo have become so enhanced. My hair is soft and tangle-free and has more volume. And i only wash once or twice a week, never use heat or chemical products. Use homemade hair oil before a shower. My shampoo has conditioner mixed in so dont need to add another conditioner. If you have a haircut suitable for your hair, then that is enouh for hair to look good. I have fine hair so i get layers cut. That enhances my waves even more. One KZbinr to check out for curly hair is Katherine Sewing. Definitely recommend.

Thank you for this video! I've seen a lot of TikTok overconsumption video essays, but they mostly focus on skincare or the latest trend (Stanley cups or hello kitty blankets). Not yet seen anyone make a video on hair care. I stopped focusing on getting ultra defined curls around July last year and instead focused on hair health, and it honestly saved my mental health as trying to get ultra defined curls and then not getting "good" results was so mentally draining. I LOVE my frizzy curls!

I may be an exception but I love my long hair routine. I do the whole "reset" with prepoo, clarify, and deep condition/bond builder every time I wash my hair which is only 1-2 times a week. My hair type does need multiple leave in products especially because of the weather but honestly I love playing around with the many products I have. Some people spend money on clothes or makeup and for me it's hair. I love hoe informative your channel is and how you don't follow trends and you do what works for you. And yes frizz is so normal! There is absolutely nothing wrong with it and it should become more normalized!

It’s refreshing to see people enjoy their hair care routine! You're not alone in that, but more often I hear from people complaining that it's too complicated.

Everyone’s needs are different. I cannot do leave in + gel or mousse. My hair will immediately start unraveling and become incredibly dry rather quickly. My hair does better when I use a leave in, a curl cream and a gel or mousse. I don’t have to do weekly treatments at this point but weekly treatments have saved my hair more than once when it was damaged. My mom was a beautician in the 1970s and she is the person who taught me about the importance of treatments as needed. Most drugstore products make my hair feel like straw. There is something in them that my hair cannot stand. When I was a kid my mom quickly realized this and bought all my products from Sally’s Beauty Supply. She didn’t go high end but she knew I needed different ingredients that most drug store products lacked in the 1970s - 80s. I switched to salon brands in 1989. I was getting highlights done at that point and needed additional moisture. I still prefer salon over drug store every day of the week. Can I use every single salon product? No. I do have better luck with them on average? Yes. Do I still appreciate some products at Sally’s and other mid range lines found at Ulta, etc? Absolutely! I’ve only found 2 drugstores products that do not make my hair a mess so it’s needed. I love my natural frizz. I’ve never had a desire to entirely eliminate it. I have big hair, I love big hair and frizz is part of it. I’ve had horrible frizz due to damage that I have needed to approach differently. It’s good to know the difference. I don’t have time or energy for an incredibly long routine every single wash day. That said, I’ve also been entirely too lazy with my hair for the majority of my life. I can spare 30 min once a week. I can shampoo, condition or do a treatment, apply my products and brush style in 30 - 40 min start to finish. 20 - 25 min of that is my shower time. Brush styling works better for me right now because I am going gray. Your existing hair does not turn grey. New growth is gray. I have 13 billion grey hairs coming in that are shorter, are a different texture and have a different curl pattern. Brush styling helps clump them with my other curls. 100% agree that people have way too many unnecessary products. It started with the revival of the “curly girl method” and went down hill from there with influencer brand recommendations. The CG BS resulted in a phobia of sulfates, belief in an excess of pseudoscience and an explosion of scalp issues. Everyone needs to clarify their hair, but many have different schedules they use to address that need. Many people with textured hair benefit from reducing the number of wash days. Several people with textured hair benefit from a treatment before they shampoo. It’s been around forever and 3 days and can be done with something as simple as a hair oil that you let sink in for 20 min. It makes it easier to quickly finger de tangle before you shower. If you are using a stronger clarifying shampoo you often need to follow it with a good conditioner/treatment that has a mix of protein and moisture. If you do it once a week, weekly treatments may be needed. Nothing too extreme. There are masks with a good balance that work in 1-2 min and can be used in the shower. I prefer them. I do full on deep conditioning/protein treatments with heat, outside of the shower, sparingly.

I wash my highlighted curly hair twice a week, too much washing strips my hair and then it’s dry/frizzy af which sucks. Satin hair bonnet.

THANK YOU!!!!! Seeing the walls of product or the half day routines - what time do they either wake up or clearly that is their job and aren’t having to get out the door in the morning! I’m manifesting the 2025 curly wavy trend of frizzy soft curls 80s style - let that be a thing!!!

Thank you for this! I have curly hair and would love for the shape to last longer or be more shinier etc. but I just can't be bothered to do long routines and I don't either think putting multiple products in your hair is good for you. I can't justify to myself the amount of time and products it would require to get little bit nicer hair.

Yes thank you so much for telling the truth. I just got my hair cut last week and my stylist told me that’s it’s mostly about the cut, if it’s cut properly there will be far less frizz. He’s right 😊. Just need a good shampoo, a good deep conditioner and you’re good 👍

When I was 12/13, I discovered I had wavy/curly hair and I was so upset that I didn’t have perfect hair like everyone on these curly hair videos. I bought so many hair products because I thought that’s what was going to make my hair perfect, but I really just wasted a bunch of money. Over the last few years, I’ve realized that it’s so unrealistic and difficult to have “perfect” hair all the time, so I’ve definitely simplified my routine and realized it’s okay to have hair that’s messy and not follow all the popular rules. I only refresh every once in a while now, whereas I would basically refresh every day in the past…Once I’ve finished all these products that I’ve bought, I’m just gonna stick to a couple products for my routine in the future.

Yea those 100 steps is annoying I was like that’s way too much work where’s my straightener lol ahahah and lots of those products don’t blend well and you end up with white residue and now you have to start all over again lol 😅

thank you for this video, i struggle with frizz so much, and no matter what "guaranteed" tips i follow it's still there, so im working on accepting it. i have a question that may be a tough ask 😂😂 im training to be a surgeon, so my hair needs to be put up AND smushed under a cap for a good chunk of time. do you maybe have some advice on how to attempt saving my curls from stretching out, or is the only solution keeping it in a very short bob probably? women in the field are still expected to be very put-together! thank you 😂

Its crazy how bad its gotten. Everyone just wants to sell product. I do deep condition every week but thats cause i have afro hair. Also i only wash once a week. I deep condition every wash because i dont use regular conditioner. You dont need both a deep conditioner and a regular conditioner

Unpopular opinion but a lot of these influencers make their curls look so glossy or rather crunchy and separated it actually looks greasy, and going natural no-product or just a non-crunchy leave in to allow your curls to be fluffy and thick looks way cuter.

I also like the fluffy and thick look. Makes for a more natural appearance.

I suspect you're right. Some hair textures aren't meant to be "shiny" either, lack of shine does not automatically mean the hair isn't healthy & moisturized! Soft fluffy hair can be healthy hair ❤

I have a long ish routine but I have a lot of time so I enjoy doing that routine. Still takes under an hour though, probably because my hair is not long. I don't enjoy refreshing my curls, I just wash every few days to keep my scalp from getting itchy. My hair looks almost straight right before I wash it. I don't need a ton of products. I also think the hair types and people getting so crazed about their hair types is a bit much.

I have a couple of different products and I don't buy anything new that I want to try until I use up something else. I swap products with another curly hair friend if something doesn't work for us, and I also donate things that don't work for me to my local school system, as they give hygiene products to students in need. Just a thought if you or anyone else have things you don't want/need!

You just randomly appeared on my feed. And you are so right I have been wearing my natural curls fo longer than most influencers have been on planet earth. I refuse to buy a whole shopping cart full of products. It's unnecessary. I went down that road and mu results didn't warrant the cost. I don't use special curly hair products and my curl is just fine. I wear a bonnet but I never ever had day. 2 hair. I just do a water rinse in the shower. These influencers have th curly kingdom bamboozled. The only one I have heard whose method I resonate with is Anthony Dickey. I did his method since about 1980 .... Long before it was a 'thing'.

Refreshing is NEVER worth it (in my humble opinion). And thank you for acknowledging the bias toward certain curl patterns. Products and strategies don’t work the same or give the same results for everyone.

I don’t think it’s rare for your hair to look as good on day 4, mine looks the worst on wash day bcuz I don’t spend a lot of time on it but it gets more volume as time goes on so from day 2-7 it looks the best. Of course I regresh it a tiny bit around the roots and bottoms but that’s it, but ya I have type 3b curls
